College Tennis: Origin Story (WIP) - Updated 8 Jun '25 [968k words]

@Sujan_Dhakal ahh!! I was savoring your comment, and basking in the good vibes and… then i forgot to reply! :joy: I’m so glad I’ve managed to poach a soccer/basketball /other sports person! :smiling_imp:

It’s also really great to hear that you can imagine the scenes during a match, and that it has that “college” flavor/essence - I really wanted that to be the case

Thanks for the really sweet comment

Already plotting potential play styles for my character, 31 endurance, 30 agility, 29 tactics, 27 finesse, and shit everything else… And yes, I’m probably overthinking it, but still; the truth or dare game was unbelievably hilarious, I’m still in the midst of my death throes of laughter. And as for bugs/typos, found a few sentences that were repeated and a couple of pronoun errors

Ahh those are impressive stats! I can see you’re really going to be able to outlast and out-strategise most people on court! Death by slow asphyxiation. Noice.

So glad ya enjoyed the truth or dare game haha! If you ever have the time to jot down / screenshot where those bugs or typos occured, i could fix em! Otherwise I’ll probably do another round of editing sometime into the future. Thanks for reading

You know, it would be useful if the game told you which stats you want for which playstyle before you start choosing which stats you up.

Now I’m sure some people would enjoy experimenting. “Let’s try Strength and Tactics!”

Others I imagine would prefer being able to choose their style and get on with the game and be disappointed if they screwed it up by misunderstanding which stats they needed. “I wanted to be a junkballer, I didn’t need strength!”

Listing which stats you want in the playstyle descriptions in the stats page would work for that with minimal editing required.

Yep, that would be me. My mc is a combination of strength, tactics and finesse and reasonably well-rounded otherwise. Worked pretty well against Emerson too. Start with his usual playstyle of tactics/finesse and then occasionally switch to tactics that employ strength more to keep opponents on the wrong-foot. Plus I really wanted that young hulk achievement. :persevere:

Deepal Is probably the character that’s going to give me one of the hardest challenges simply because he has a similar playing style to my MC, with the whole outlasting the other guy bit

@stsword Mm, good idea. I’ll lay out some “usual/common” skills under each playing style in the glossary/stats page as a guide  Thanks for that!

Still, though, I’d say the guide would by no means be prescriptive - playing styles are a quick-and-loose approximation of various groupings of strengths/weaknesses, in the same way that songs in a certain genre can really differ in terms of rhythm, types of instruments etc. even while sharing some basic similarities.

So - I guess I wanted to make sure the player is free to personalise the types of skills they want to pursue, and not feel bound to a certain set of skills because of the playing style they want. After all, irl, there’s a real range/spectrum of rather different players who are technically classified under the same playing style

@Sujan_Dhakal Haha, not to mention Deepal’s ability to really stay calm even when under a shit ton of pressure. And get the crowd pumped up. I’m going to experiment ways to make the crowd atmosphere matter more in later matches (+ choices that will allow the player to affect that atmosphere: where charisma / some of the other personality traits may come in!)

In high school, I did not enjoy playing tennis in gym class. Maybe it was the teacher that made it a chore or the game itself, but I just couldn’t wait to move on from it. But in this story, you’ve made me have fun with tennis.

I managed to win my match on the first go, a complete surprise to me. I do enjoy how you force us to really pay attention to not juat our play style, but our opponent’s. Much like a real match.

And now that I’ve met G … they really have me reconsidering my options. I just knew I’d either give a try with Sam, or go with Tobin. Now, you have me unsure. I like that.

Looking forward to diving more into college life. The party was cool.

Ah! So glad that’s the case. Yes, I hope to make sure each match has a unique flavor, with different challenges based on the context and the opponent.

As for not being sure about an RO, that’s great too  I hope to make the eventual decision as difficult as possible. True to college, too, perhaps? :stuck_out_tongue:

Lol. I’m grateful to have avoided all that romance stuff in my college years. It’s far easier for me to dive into the tangled romantic lives of fictional characters and put my MCs through the ringer

And I’m definitely looking forward to different and more challenging matches.

I find I have a fondness for pusher with agility and endurance.

But I tried a strength, agility, and endurance playthrough, and that was interesting. Got young hulk achievement, won the race, won against Emerson. Oliver Garcia’s new teammates are probably wondering if he was rocketed to Earth as a baby from Krypton.

Those are my mc’s relative weaknesses, which I guess makes him slightly atypical for an “all court” player.
They’re still only relative weaknesses though as my mc is pretty well-rounded. But I suppose it is possible for opponents to wear him out if they have some superior reserve of stamina somewhere…which is essentially what happened in that highschool match against Rayyan too near the end.

So I guess my mc would be most weary of going up against that Chowdurry kid…and Rayyan too of course. Those are the two that I think could most easily beat him out of his current teammates.

Also funny that my mc isn’t the only Japanese American on his new team.

My MC is literally a puny weakling, he can out think his opponents and outlast them but his volleying is terrible and strength is nonexistent

Loving this WIP! Even if I’m not necessarily a tennis fan unless my country has a player in the finals at a major, I’m really enjoying the aspects of it in this WIP (along with everything else! Always fun to have a college-set game). Have to admit I like building strength/agility/endurance just to win both the strength test and the race lol.

One question, I remember last update getting a scene with Rayyan immediately after the lunch scene/dancing where you could talk to Rayyan and ask about a photo in her wallet showing members of her family (sisters?) but I can’t seem to get it again - it’s always talking with Tobin after the lunch now. Was the scene removed?

Both a suggestion and a bug, right after you go into the college and meet Mike and his people, you get a choice about your sexuality, but even though I played as a straight guy, the options to flirt with everybody were still there. Pretty sure that’s a bug. And my suggestion would be to actually push that choice back into the prologue since you have an option to flirt with Sam before that choice ever comes up. That, or you could just remove it entirely, there are a lot of games that just do that

@stsword HAHA! Damn! Gotta put in a finesse/tactics check to get you, eh?

@Choobacca Aww so glad you liked the WIP so far  Ah! You’re right, great memory! I took it out so I could edit it a little, but thanks to your question I’ve just gone ahead to write it and add it back to the scene. It didn’t take very long, so thanks for the motivation

@Sujan_Dhakal Ah yes, this was raised to me by someone else too, it’s a valid point! I’ve postponed the question to later on in the story, in favor of allowing your specific choices on whether or not to flirt with the character determine whether or not those options appear in the later chapters. Personally, I feel this reflects real life as well: i.e. one meets a human, and one gets to choose whether or not to do anything… non-platonic.

That said, any preferences on when ‘flirty’ options should cease to exist? I.e. when would folks feel that they’ve ‘gotten to know’ the character enough to want to go into a fully platonic branch?

Ok, I finished the demo and honestly @burninglights you are sooo cruel for making G so appealing :joy_cat: Heartbreaker exchange student.
I really liked how you set up the tennis gameplay, you made playing tennis seem enjoyable and I never played tennis.
It was really nice to beat Emerson’s butt, just my lack I went with combo that’s perfect for it - finesse+tactics+agility aka probably not the best mix but it worked for me so far, MC is too fast, too furious and they’ll be toast against someone with more strength and endurance (like Rayyen… yeah).

Speaking of, I thought my MC would have a typical bickering rivalry with Rayyen but since they like everyone’s who’s dedicated it was bickering until they both… moved on and started respecting each other. I thought that came off really realistic if you make MC who’s a little cocky shit but dedicated and hardworking. Uneasy respect slowly turning into friendship.

Ahahah YES! This was one of the first things I imagined when I was brainstorming for the WIP. I really wanted to write a character that was nose-to-the-grindstone, hardworking, intense (who knows that in life all victories are hard-fought) i.e. Rayyan. Having an MC that’s a “little cocky shit”, like you say, would absolutely rile Rayyan up - until the junior realises how hard MC actually works. Which would make Rayyan pause a little, and wonder if there’s more than meets the eye.

Anyway, I’m totally with you. Excited to build on this dynamic, and of course I’ll love to hear from you

P.S. AHAHA! G’s just a walking, talking reminder that the best things in life don’t last forever
