College Tennis: Origin Story (WIP) - Updated 7 Nov '24 [621k words]

So… has anyone actually lost to Max? I stick to my weak side, yet no matter what I do (ie. whether it’s reading the play/blindly taking a run or picking whatever type of serve) I keep coming up victorious. For ref I play junk baller 29-9-40-24-23-26 on this run and tried to see how the game plays out if you do… but can’t lose :smiley:

IIRC the outcome of quite a few matches is heavily influenced by who gets the first point. For the match with Max, your main problem is going to be the fact that even if you lack the stats to pass checks (which requires attributes lower than 25) you get a “second chance” behind the scenes that’s literal coin toss which potentially still allow you to pass the check(s)

Oh my god this game is so good. I feel like its the spititual seccesor to the game slammed(for me). It’s a personal game about a sport that i know nothing about, but now i want to know more.

this game actually made me start watching tennis matches LOL. i was already sort of into sports but getting down into the technical terms of tennis and things in this game made me appreciate tennis a little more. finding each players unique style and quirks. i love it and this game showcases it well. :face_holding_back_tears:

Why would you say, “i literally could not care less about the tennis shit,” when the author made a tennis IF in no small part because she loves tennis?

well you know sometimes life is just like that :sunglasses: dont get me wrong i love LUV sports like i was a varsity soccer player back in high school BUT right now im really feeling the latest update of the chapter!!! it’s the BEST

hope that helps clarify what i meant :heart:

One thing of concern the author has not msged since June 27. No sneak peak, no update date,
nothing. I don’t know but wherever this happens I feel concern.

The author made a post on their tumblr like, 10 hours ago, so she seems ok. IIRC she’s mentioned that when she’s busy the online presence is the first to go, so i guess that’s what happened…?

Also, she made a post on ko-fi a little bit earlier with updated portraits of ROs.

Time to refocus on the demo/WiP work and not what other posters are doing.

Thanks, everyone.

Edit: Since the last 5 posts in a row had NOTHING to do with College Tennis: Origin Story they were deleted.

Edit2: I had to delete 2 more posts that were off-topic and discussing moderation … the next poster that does either of these things will be suspended.

Hey everyone! Hope you’ve all been doing great—just wanted to check in especially since it seems there’s been a couple of flagged posts haha I hope all’s good in the club :slight_smile:

I’ve been a bit more silent because I’ve been super busy with life but still trying to get as much writing done as I can, and as some earlier posters mentioned, that usually means me stepping away from social media and Tumblr (with the exception of posting the wonderful character portraits that were recently finished! :slight_smile:)

Here’s an update to let y’all all know I’ve not dropped off the face of the Earth (and I’m definitely not planning to drop CT:OS! In fact, I’ve been plugging away at it—sometimes at the expense of my friends and family… though I’ve been trying my best to balance those as well.)

The FULL chapter update of the weekend with Sam is almost done. I’m 90k words in now (and have posted the sneak peek with the post-match scenes + dinner + bar scene).

NEW scenes I’ve written include team dinner with Sam included (or not), a party scene (with potential drunk confession scenes and a little drinking game), as well as not one but TWO scenes where MC gets to decide whether to share a bed with Sam.

I’ll be posting the non-beta-tested chapter update as soon as I edit and finish writing the portion where MC returns to Cargill after sending Sam off to the train station, which I’m thinking should be soon—possibly by the end of the month for ko-fi supporters and beta-testers, and 2-3 weeks later for the edited/beta-tested version (to the public). Stay tuned!

You have any thoughts about the stat thing discussed on here a while back? The idea since the matches themselves should also to some extent lead to an improvement in your skills, you get an automatic +1 for every match you win/a +2 as a consolation for if you lose?

I’m intrigued by the idea for sure! Would have to find a way to decide what skill the +1 or +2 to go to though. Maybe a ‘key’ juncture in the final set (either second or third depending on how long the match lasts) could have MC decide what to do, and the skills tested could be the ones that would be assigned the boost?

To keep it relatively simple, i’d suggest making it +1/2 to all skills – the reasoning being, a match is effectively “training” of all abilities simultaneously to some extent, both how to execute them and how to deal with your opponent executing them, so it doesn’t have to be limited to what MC is doing specifically.

And given we don’t play that many matches, the overall stat gains wouldn’t be large enough to throw things out of bounds.

For the prologue, I think that the character going to eat Chinese with father should increase relationship points with father, but the relationship stat remains the same. Is that intended?

Your relationship improves if you don’t choose to tell game (and MC’s father) explicitly you are not interested in patching things up:

  #Raise an eyebrow. It's too little, too late. "You don't have to do this, you know."
    *set friendly %-4
    *set serious %+3
    He frowns, a little confused. "Do what?"
//...
    He's offering a lifeline, a chance to start afresh, if you want it.
    *choice
      #Oh, what the heck. "Sure. Here's to new beginnings, I guess."
        *set father %+3
        He smiles at this, relief awash over his face.
//...
        *goto choose_restaurant
      #"I think that ship has sailed a long time ago," I say firmly.
        *set ship_sailed true
        *set friendly %-2
        There's a brief silence, and you watch uncomfortably as he attempts to squash down his disappointment. "Uh. Sure." He blinks a couple of times, then stands up and half-turns toward the door.
//...
        *goto choose_restaurant

Hey wanted to say I like the game I been trying to get my MC like baby steps and I was like there should be like a little skill thing for the characters. I like the cheat code system too and hope it stays in the main base. Really enjoy the game.

I figured out my style finally got to the end of the first part demo really liked it. It took many different tries I kept replaying it until I got it right and when it didn’t completely reset after an error.

I really hope that the beast mode stays for the full game because it still added to what skills and style I played there was times if I use my less it still would have a different outcome and I liked that. Also with beast mode I felt like the hero of tennis like I was helping everyone around me get better and improved they game to. I was junk baller with high finesse, high tactics, high agility and med endurance. My style that I used during this was to help my team and self grow stronger and it felt like it when we beat ESU for the first time.

I really appreciate the author for this and can’t wait for the next update of the demo or even the release would love to see a skill thing happen.

Like with a the intelligence plus tactics can give you vision yourself winning ahead of the match ability and during breaks you get that ability to use the notebook to breakdown your opponent and self I find it cool in a way.
The only other thing I would love to see added would be like a chance to buy a tennis racket and have it like unique to you if you decided to buy one where it can give you like a skill that complement your style that you get to pick like: drive volley, more spin on ball, or even perfect form

All in all really appreciate it and love it looking forward to more thank you so much for this very interesting

I enjoy the beast mode feature as well, if only because I’m not a min-maxing type of player (but I totally understand folks that are!). I’m the kind of person who plays RPGs on easy mode and glosses over combat because I just want the romance and narrative. I think the author has made an amazing game in every respect (including the tennis match content) and by all means should keep developing that aspect of the game, but if it’s okay, leaving the beast mode feature in at the end would be great for those of us who are just hopeless romantics lol
