I’m gonna go on a limb here and say I’m the youngest in this conversation, considering I’m half Haven’s age.
Which means I have the least to worry about getting old.
Oh, I’m pretty sure we still have some teenagers in the thread…
When it’s time we’ll hold a fucking apella to decide if you’re a senile old man, Havengroan, and summarily if your methods of producing the XORverse must be forcibly seized and redistributed.
Such sedition and blasphemy shall not be tolerated. The “means of production” are a gift to the Eclect alone, and any attempt to mimic them is vilest Goety.
I can one up you on that, with the power of procrastination I will never finish XOR even if I am an immortal freed from all obligations and thus given all the time in the world.
Angsty 18 year old here!
Honestly, I really do hope we see a bit more of character relationships and cool-down times in future XOR games. I know I talked a lot about the latter in a previous post but I’m gonna talk about. The former. Because I’m feeling it.
In FE9 a lot of people got surprised that Jill, already on your side, can be swayed by her father to join the enemy side mid fight, immediately putting all the levels and stats and unique weapons you got her against you, and that’s cool enough. But then I learned that after she’s defected from you, you can persuade her back to you with two characters only if you left them under specific circumstances in their conversations.
I really appreciate stuff like that: that the game rewards you for paying attention to a character’s driving forces and relationships (remember the talks they had and where they left off?) and punishes you for ignoring them (why would you make an indoctrinated 14-year old kill her dad it’s bound to go bad?).
The main character doesn’t get this: this is between character-and-character. And I love character and character interaction! I love people beating the shit out of eachother as much as I love people talking about this or that good-naturedly. Characters shouldn’t exist only when they are a) someone else’s love interest or b) the main character is talking to them.
The band in XOR doesn’t interact with eachother very much. We have a few standout scenes: Ciels vs Suzane, Elery getting pissed at you for not helping Breden, Breden vs Old Woman We Didn’t Get To Talk To Very Often Despite Her Literally Raising Us Especially After Angry Dad Scene, Aless and Pin have one scene, but then they both disappear for… all of the game, unless you’re starving children or something. Interactions need to be consistent in development if not in tone.
Will Suzane ever understand? Will Ciels get along with her eventually? Alternatively, do Ciels and Kalt get along? Is Teren the one who looks after the kids, seeming as the children seem to live in a hive-mind bubble where they are represented as a mass regardless of age or independence? There is very much a disconnect here that doesn’t make it feel like a band so much as a gathering of important NPCs who represent the stats you need for something.
Radmar and Breden is the only one that comes to mind here. Every time they interact - at least(?) three scenes - there’s consistent and rising tension, and tellingly Radmar suggests the opposite of whatever Breden wants. The tension isn’t defused, so it comes to a really memorable head: mostly because Radmar is very loud and aggressive and distinguishable by character archetype alone and Breden has a lot of development. The scene hits harder because not only are you losing stats if you fail to defuse the situation: you lose arguably the most memorable characters your band has behind your Dad and the optional beacon of chastity.
Ciels shot up pretty far up my ranks once I realised they can mutually kill Radmar if no one else is available. But I don’t get to see or ask what Breden saw in them; we don’t even get to ask, if I remember rightly, what they think of the whole “we’re married but Breden gotta fuck” plan. In fact, Ciels can appear in so much by virtue of being the default character the game turns to when everyone else is dead and gone that they become iconic in their own right if you play like shit.
Also: that woman who can shoot a Plektos in the eye, who is she? Immediate respect. I love you, lady whose name I forgot.
Point being: characters interacting with characters also helps flesh them out as well as the world just by kinda… crashing people together. It’s important and makes them identifiable and XOR with its many characters and substitute NPCs really needs to make its people memorable. You can’t just rely on the main character and main character satellite fluff alone.
The problem is that I don’t have all those people you are talking about. I only have Simon and Ciels. It is impossible focus in character vs character interaction when half your audience haven’t any of them at all.
I think in future games Havie will establish certain script characters and those will be the ones to make the band feel more alive. As I recognize that the band feel totally dead and silent. But We help have to fix that.
Mara, your band feels dead and empty because… well, everyone is dead. Or empty. For a 40-people band with no kids or major returning characters that’s had everyone slaughtered… it makes sense to be quiet.
But a 600-person band with every named possible character alive? No excuse! It should not feel so empty!
The archer you’re talking about is Alyssa she gets recognized after winter as one of the few that the camp deems a leader outside of the main cast.
They are no dead they are in their villages as it was no uprising so Yay.
What I am saying is difficult to create content with variables so wild. Except you want game will be far bigger and double time in writing.
I hope that in future with fixed characters the groups feel more dynamics and player could have meaningful relationship with people and companions. I mean the fact I had to create a npc for make interactions between my character shows heavily what is the lacking of this game
Lol what plan is this?
Marry Breden as an aromantic.
“Please have sex with my spouse.” I really need to play more paths.
More like “Can I fuck someone else?” But. Yeah. Lmao
Bredens a Kryptast. Married MC and get Ciels as their sex buddy with no repercussions.
Elery getting pissed at you for not trusting Breden
Elery getting pissed at you for looking sideways at Breden
Elery getting pissed at you for blocking line of sight to Breden
Elery getting pissed because you don’t let her bone a guy twice her age.
Who’s that?
Ghost Elery pissed because Ghost breden is not in charge. When I have no Elery and Beeden is far away in Spy land
