Choice of Rebels Part 1 WIP thread

I just gave this a quick playthrough, it’s awesome so far. If this game is going to let me be Joan of Arc like the religious path seems to be hinting at then I’ll play the hell out of it.

It shouldn’t have done that. The choice “No – I could lose them all by meddling with religion.” should just take you straight to the Hector vignette without any stat change. Want to try another playthrough?

Think I’ve fixed the other bugs, including the loop – thanks again!

You mean, before “I tugged at his arm and asked if he could sing Samena’s Song in memory of my mother”? No – it never appeared before that request.

Ah yes… that would be because when you told your father they would be your guests, instead of a slight increase in the variable that measures your relationship with Horion, I slightly increased the variable that measures Horion’s status in your band – which means the game thought you’d kidnapped him. That should be fixed now, and the unwarranted anxiety hopefully gone!

A 0 charisma MC unfortunately won’t be able to control the mob. The best you can do is direct them to less objectionable targets. Order them to kill the alastors and such quickly - they won’t heed any calls to mercy without at least a 1 in charisma. Afterwords, have them rob the traders. They’ll leave the nobles alone then at least, so you can avoid angering them any more than necessary.

I just replayed and I must have done something else to raise that stat. I don’t remember what choices I made. The replays are all starting to blend.

‘"No one to tell us which way the Angels want us to walk. No one to reassure us that we’re still within Xthonos’ sacred will. And I know some of you have wondered whether I feel the same lack.’ This is missing the closing quotation marks.

“You do your best to recall how you’ve heard the nobility greet each other, and repeat it as if ‘you were yourself one of Them’.” Them is capitalized and the end of the sentence is a little awkward.

I had Zvad take Horion back to camp, Blyes informed me of their name, and Kala put an arrow in his shoulder at some point in the night causing him to naturally, bleed out and die… at which point I had breakfast and discussed Philosophy and the Xaos lands with his corpse. We discovered the Xoas lands somehow blessed his shoulders with regenerative powers, he now seeks to join the Unquiet Dead and learn the arts of necromancy. He hopes to one day debate Philosophy with all the dead Nryrish giants.

@Sneaks We should look and see if they offer a discount for group therapy…

I was very hospitable to Horion and the game still seems to think I’ve kidnapped him. He isn’t any less surprised when I let him go.

“Daddy, why are you laughing so loud?” --my three year-old

Will have a look at that one ASAP when we get home. (I’m on my way back from visiting the Tower of London with CoG co-founder Adam and his family, who celebrated the New Year with us this year).

I am missing able to talk to a character?

Could well be a persistent bug, but just to check: by any chance had you murdered the de Merre family in their beds? That puts you at a disadvantage with your relationship Horion, even if you’re hospitable.

Edit: nope, just played through as unthreateningly as possible and still got the scared response. Will try again to fix that this eve!

Which one?

And @jgundy, glad you’re liking it!

That’s intentional, and (I believe) grammatically correct – it’s to indicate that you remain the speaker at the start of the next paragraph.

The capitalized Them (for aristos by helots) is also intentional… though it should probably be introduced in Chapter 1 so as to not come out of the blue. I’ll see about reducing awkwardness of phrasing.

OK, for the life of me I can’t see how that works from looking at the code. There should be no way for Kala to kill Horion any place except in the pass, or for Horion to drop dead in between dinner and breakfast. I’ll do the playthrough you describe tomorrow and see if I can replicate it.

Meanwhile, I’ve tinkered and hopefully finally fixed the bug that meant Horion was always suspicious when you chose to release him…

It appears if Kalt is present and you trigger id 4 either through the father or Bleys, Kalt kills them and you proceed to get up for breakfast with them in the same page.

Sorry, I think my fanfic muddled the bug report. Here is the page that happens after dinner with them and confronting Kala about knowing their name.

“So when he arrives in Whendward, you take it on yourself to put an arrow in him. Without so much as telling me.” You pause for a moment, trying to check your fury. “And when did you plan to inform me and Zvad that we had murdered the Archon’s cousin?”

“Captain…”

“How long did you expect we would need to prepare for every Phalangite in Shayard marching into Whendward?”

Kala swallows visibly. “Truly, Captain? I didn’t think it would make a
difference. If it would – if we aren’t already the Archon’s first
priority – what are we doing wrong?” The last words burst out of her
with anguished force.

You ignore her words. “Don’t you ever try to force my hand, Kala. You disagree with me, you tell me. But if I catch you hiding the truth from me on something this important again… you’ll be lucky if I give you a running start.”

For a moment, she looks as if she’d say more – but in the end, Kala just mutters, “Understood, Captain.”

In the morning, you eat a spare breakfast while considering how best to
question your guests. Upon reflection, you decide you want them to see
you as:

Friendly host.
Pragmatic outlaw.
Menacing interrogator.

After that page it counties normally as if Horin and Linos were alive (which they were). It does look like you finally got the bug with Horin being surprised at being let go.

The quotation marks confused me there because it creates a new paragraph with new quotation marks after that but you remained the speak (and maybe before, not real sure). I will replay at some point and quote the whole page.

I agree about capitalizing Them being done earlier to make it more consistent.

I also found something else, I chose to trust Breden, but Zvad still wanted to test him and this text appeared. ‘If you satisfy yourself that Breden is no traitor, he’d be a natural leader in the band, and you don’t want lingering suspicions to keep Zvad from working well with him.’

I chose to not suspect Breden after the uprising, and he was involved in both the attack on the alastor garrisons and begging for food. Breden never accused me of suspecting either after the meeting and I had no plans of entrapping him with the camp’s location.

Might I suggest adding a pronunciation guide to the glossary?

Never had anyone to talk about the xaos lands…

@Player: Branch out into a more compassionate MC. Tell Horion you want to end the Harrowing of helots.

I know this might have been asked already but I gotta ask  :

Why is it that if I get Simon I don’t get Kalt (and vice versa)

At least your priorities are in the right place.

Thanks to you and @Firetrout, I think I’ve got that one fixed now – the Kalt/a scene should now only trigger if (lead = “me”) in addition to the other two criteria. In that context, it will hopefully be clear your reference to “murdered the Archon’s cousin” is Kalt/a’s attempted murder in the Pass, not a successful off-screen assassination in camp…

Also changed the Breden bit, thanks! The choice to tell Breden you trust him after the raid doesn’t necessarily establish that you actually trust him… so I’ve now put a choice in just before the testing to confirm whether you do or not.

Well, I don’t want to enforce my own mental pronunciation on anybody else. As a reader, I’ve too often been disappointed when an author has some lame pronunciation in mind rather than the totally awesome way I’d been hearing it in my own head. (In XOR’s case, I think Zzowss is an excellent alternative way to pronounce Xaos).

They’re looking for diametrically opposed things in a leader. If you’re the kind of rebel who would attract Kalt, you won’t appeal to Simon, and vice versa.

Ahhh ok! Cheers for clarifying

@Havenstone

Having replayed and reflected on Chapter 2 a bit since the update, I was thinking about the de Marre raid more. I think one of the possible ways to stop the slaughter of the nobles in question should be similar to the way it can be stopped during the Harrowing. Namely by appealing to the helots’ desire for a justice system that is fair and impartial. I think the MC should say to Ora something to the effect of “I believe the de Marres are evil and that they have done the things you say but murdering them now will gain us nothing. Once we have freed this country, those found guilty of murder and torture will be held accountable. Until then we can be satisfied with their wealth feeding and clothing those they have wronged.”

Would the alastor’s clubs count towards the Arms stat? If so, there’s a bit of continuity error in the Chirex scene. Using theurgy to disarm the alastors mentions twenty clubs flying into the air, but at the start of chapter 2 Arms is set to 10.

@Sneaks I believe Havenstone previously said that Arms is a measurement of how many GOOD weapons your group has. Simple things like clubs don’t count.
