The short and the skinny of this entire issue is that publishers and authors/designers have very little to no say in how the algorithms and backend processes work.

Having experienced different storefronts’ standard operating procedure over a long period of time, I guess I view things differently than most in this community.

Since I have no control over Apple, Google, Steam, or any other storefront, there are two things I can do that will insulate me from their “tinkering.”

The first thing I can do is concentrate on my product and ensure it is the best I can put forth.

The second is to ensure that my product is offered in as many storefronts as possible.

With Choice of Games increasing activity on Steam, I feel they are doing well in promoting everyone’s works as much as possible. This type of support is important to all of us and it is one of the reasons I am loyal to them both as a costumer and an author.

As Havenstone says:

The “rating system” deployed by a storefront at any given time is something that should not cause you (as in the community) to fixate on things so minuet that you lose sight of the larger picture – let your publisher (Choice of Games) work for you and let them add their voice to the other publishers/developers.

Even with a horde of developers screaming at them, the storefronts often do not respond to the feedback given them with regard to their algorithm; giving yourself anxiety and stress is just super-counter productive.

YMMV.

I’m going to second not obsessing on ratings. My worst rated game has also sold by far the most copies, go figure. There seems to be a lot of other factors other than just ratings, and when it comes down to it, everyone’s in the same boat with changes google makes.

But if we don’t obsess over revenue and ratings, we might actually start enjoying writing for writing’s sake. O.o

I can do both :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Lucky bastard. I can only do the former.

why do i need internet after i download a game? or is this some kind of bug in the App¿?

@anon4518890 Is this in regards to the Choice of Games omnibus app?

edit: Disregard my previous question, lol. All of the CoG/Hosted Games apps should work offline. If it says otherwise, then I suggest you contact support as I’m afraid that this is outside the scope of what the forum can do to help.

Ugh googles started capping the number of games that can be seen at 100 through both clicking on the company title and see more side bar now. It means a lot of games won’t be seen anymore without the omnibus.

Well that sucks a bit, doesn’t it? Nothing about the changes they have made in the last year has been good for us, that’s for sure.

A quick comment, almost half a year on from the change: I haven’t noticed any substantial difference in my sales trends since Google Play changed their review score algorithm, even though this dropped Rebels from a stable 4.5 to a steady 4.0. (I guess the proportion of disgruntled “where’s the sequel” reviews are only likely to grow with time…)

I realize my experience may not be the norm, but it suggests at least that the CoG/HG market need not be hyper-sensitive to Play Store scores… which would be encouraging, given the prevalence of “make it free” one-stars and Google’s tendency to switch things up.

Add the games less than 3 star the omnibus. Problem solved.

The absolutely bizarre thing is that while Werewolves dropped from 4.7 to 4.2, my sales actually went up by a significant margin during that time. So perhaps my concern over ratings was a bit overstated. Lower ratings still annoy me, but a lot less now that I know they don’t have as much of an affect on the algorithm as I expected.

Similar situation, in that the freebies (or at least that’s the term I’m going with for the folks who neg-bomb reviews over having to pay for a game) keep hitting the score for TPS, which is now down to 3.9, yet that platform’s still responsible for a crazy high amount of my earnings. Percentage-wise, standalone Google was 40% of purchases back during the first month of release when it was rated like 4.2-4.5 on the store, but even with the freebies chipping away at the score that percentage has kept climbing, to where last month just non-omnibus Google sales were 69% of all the buys that happened. Meanwhile, it’s at a 4.7 on the omnibus but that still yielded less than a quarter of purchases combined across all platforms that have an omnibus app. I think some of that may also be attributed to the name; The Parenting Simulator won out over Quite App-Parent because it was more direct and easily searchable, but that doesn’t help as much in a marketplace where purchases have to be funneled through a separate app.

Yeah, the Google Play store has consistently been my biggest sales platform by far, easily selling 5 to 6 times as many copies as both the iOS and Android omnibuses combined. That’s why I was so freaked at the idea of removing the individual apps from GPS.
