Bitten!

@Lonehero I love Dick Tracy! Even now, I would prefer a two-way wrist radio to a mobile phone…

@ElliWoelfin @Starkness Thanks for playing! I’m going to add that toggle to give players of the demo the choice of picking their animal or not. For the full game, I’m still undecided whether to allow it on the first playthrough… And thanks for the catch, @Starkness - will correct that right away.

@AdmiralLynx89 Thank you! Thrilled you enjoyed it

I also agree that it’d be better to pick an animal of choice, and not have it be randomized.

Other than that, I liked the atmospheric setting of the demo. The mix of the hard-boiled narrative and the 60s West Coast counterculture setting gives the narrative a very particular hook. It kind of reminds me of Inherent Vice (the movie, I haven’t read the novel). I do think it’s funny that “Hip” and “Square” are opposite-stats in the page, too.

One other thing that jumped at me: is this game an alternate history scenario where JFK didn’t die? I thought it’d be a pretty straightforward receation of the US in the 60s, but that hook adds a lot more possibilities to the story. Color me intrigued.

Praise the spirit of Chester Gould! I’ve finally found another Dick Tracy fan! It’s been so long since I’ve found one.

It seems to be a minority opinion, but I love the idea of the animal being randomized for the first playthrough.

I think it would help challenge the player and introduce them to a playing style they might have otherwise looked over!

I see what you’re going for by randomizing the animals, but realistically, a lot of people are either just going to restart until they get the/an animal they want, or lose interest when they get an animal they dislike. I’m part of the former group, for example.

Just means there’ll be the option to either have randomization or choose, I personally will likely go random especially since i’m pretty sure random is the only way to get some of the secret animals I remember hearing about earlier in the thread you likely wont be able to pick from with normal choosing

Just wanted to pop in and say I absolutely loved everything about the demo, the choices, the characters, the writing style, the setting, the language used, it was all awesome! I wasn’t keeping an eye on this before, but after trying the demo this has gone straight to my must buy list, I can’t wait to experience more of this world, rarely has a demo gripped me so thoroughly before. Thanks for a great read and I wish you the best of luck with your writing!

Okay, I’ve now updated the demo to allow you to choose your animal! This is essentially what I had planned for all subsequent playthroughs after the first one. The reason I wanted the first one to randomise it is that some of the appeal in early chapters will be in gradually discovering what animal bit you by the effects it has on you. I didn’t want to spoil that for first-time players who won’t even know to expect it. That said, I’m happy to explain all that at the start of the game and still give players the choice if they want it.

@Vertigo That’s more or less exactly the atmosphere I wanted so I’m really pleased it worked! And yes, it’s (light) alt-history and the reasons why will become apparent in later chapters…

@Sleepyowl Thrilled you enjoyed it so much. Thank you!

As ever, I’m very grateful to everyone for all the feedback. It’s very helpful indeed.

This is such an interesting game! Seriously, it’s nothing at all of what I expected when it comes to the superhero genre of IF games, I’m genuinely thrown off. You’ve really drawn a vivid picture of the decade through language, world-building and the interactions with characters. I felt like I was experiencing it all first hand, which isn’t an easy feat as my MC’s are used as characters rather than self-inserts.

I can’t wait to see what my animal bite equates to in the future, I chose the eagle. Will I sprout wings? Dive bomb for salmon? Gain yellow eyes? One can only hope!

Best of luck with further developments generous author.

@Raion I hope it’s worth the wait!

@Lea_Boucher Thanks so much! It means a lot to hear it worked so well.

With your permission, I would like to immediately steal that idea!

Thanks! The big question will be whether or not you choose to wear sunglasses…

This made me wonder how massive are the mutations are we talking spider man or baxter stockman (OG). As whatever the choice is will have a massive imapct on the MCs ability to live their life

Yes it’s correct. Will our alteration in the physical aspect be permanent or in moments we will be able to see ourselves humans and others in that transformed monster with which that thing bit us?

@MindightWatcher @Frankex_2272 I hope you won’t mind if I answer your questions by quoting some remarks that a dear friend of mine made way back near the start of the thread.
