August 2024 Writer Support Thread

Oh I assure you, that can actually happen.

This discussion is a) making me snicker oh so much, and b) further convincing I’ll need to get the series at some point (one of my favourite books is about a 17th-century cavalry officer, for crying out loud).

Picturing running quicktest on empty project now. On the plus side, it’ll probably pass. On the minus side… it wouldn’t do anything useful.

I don’t know how I missed it then! (I was killed by my own men at Blogia because they didn’t trust my leadership, but that’s not quite the same thing.) Do you happen to remember exactly what it takes to trigger that?

Oh, you definitely do.

Taking Harlech as your sergeant, and having your loyalty low enough by the 607 campaign.

I failled a no text quick test for erasing the choice stat by mistake so you can

I was probably saved by my choice of sergeant then.

Sooo I’ve gotten access to my new apartment and have been moving things over there… But I got hit w/ some inspo and am going to finally work on the 3rd and final part of a fanfic series I should probably try and finish :joy: I wanted to give it the choice of two different endings from the start (will they/won’t they get together) but at the time, wasn’t aware of IF technology. Also this is great because instead of starting a whole new story, I can try and learn ChoiceScript tactics, strategies, and coding a bit more while finishing this series woop! Goofy but it is feeling good so far! And then see where I can branch out from there (another fanfic or start really delving into my original story)… More to come!

I wrote over 1500 words today! It doesn’t feel like a lot, but at the same time, it also does. This is shaping up to be a much longer chapter than I expected :smiling_face_with_tear: I’m so close to hitting my 50k milestone and when I do, I am gonna buy myself something nice. Maybe snacks. Or maybe craft supplies. :two_hearts: I hope you are all having a nice weekend!

And after reading all your thoughts, I’m going to add the code to my wordcount and just include all three numbers because why not lol

Damn right!

It is definitely more than what I’ve been able to reliably write in a day (which is bad if I actually want to finish a single book, let alone multiple) so from where I’m standing (sitting), it does feel like a lot.

(Also my tonight’s best typo, “thesis” = “Thessia”. And my best misreading, “methodology” = “mythology”.)

Today I wrote stone-mead face instead stone-dead. I mean a bionic Ratman mafia boss totally would be mead full in his tutu

Currently I’m dealing with a really frustrating case of writer’s block. I finally posted an update to my wip, but after months of working on the same chapter I feel totally lost every time I open CSIDE. I know where the story is going and what comes next, but I’m struggling to find the words.

My plan is to just keep trying to throw myself at it until I can write again…but that doesn’t make the empty document any less intimidating :pensive:

You could just try putting in some “X goes there” and “Y happens” paragraphs so that you get some visual guidelines about where you’re going and the file isn’t empty anymore?

(I literally have multiple "blah"s and "todo"s.)

Seconding that. When I am having trouble writing a specific thing, I usually have three things that I do to help.

  1. I fill in the blank space WITH CAPITAL LETTERS DESCRIBING WHAT IM GOING TO WRITE LIKE THEN THEY GO TO THE HOUSE AND EAT DINNER AND TALK ABOUT STUFF THAT TELLS THE READER ABOUT THE WORLD and then I leave it the heck alone and the next day I usually wake up with more specific ideas. And even if I don’t, it’s not empty so I automatically feel better.
  2. I have a spare project. I don’t know how good of an idea that really is because I’ve seen how many people try unsuccessfully to juggle multiple projects, but this isn’t a project I plan to ever publish. It’s nothing but self indulgent writing with no direction or goal and it just helps me get the writing muscles moving in my brain while also distracting me from being mean to myself for not writing what I “should” be.
  3. I repeat “the best version is the one that’s finished” over and over like a weirdo while I write out absolute garbage: they go home. they have dinner. they make sandwiches together. bananas! “i really like our neighborhood,” he says. etc. I can fix it later! For me, editing is often easier than the first round of writing because there’s no empty page: it’s already there and just needs polish. Sometimes a lot of polish lol

I don’t know if those things will be helpful to you but remember to be kind to yourself even if you aren’t working at the standard or pace you want or expect. And if you ever just need encouragement, you can come to my PMs because I love what you’re working on and I will hype. you. the fuck. up. :two_hearts:

Actually that goes for everyone: if anyone needs a hype man, I am here to hype.

Which reminds me,

I believe this is precicely the point, Put your brain in the mode of just producing text. I haven’t used the app in question, but I’ve looked into other ones (they sometimes announce themselves as apps for fighting writer’s block, and sometimes as writing practice apps).

All my creative writing is self indulgent. :stuck_out_tongue:

I got some advice. Sometimes when I’m stuck I just write out the choices and have a little comment that says what the paragraph is supposed to say. once all the decision trees are written in cside you just have to add the flavor text one chunk at a time.

Other advice, if you’re incredibly stuck, try writing something totally different for a bit. Maybe even for a day. Write something completely unrelated. It sometimes just gets you out of the rut and back on track. Just don’t do what I did and go so far that you end up publishing the writer’s block side project

I’m not going to lie, this is how I’ve writing my current project. All the choices have already been skeletoned out, I’m just filling in the blanks now.

It can still be a real slog sometimes.

Today’s frustration #1: I spent two days practically sleeping, so now I have to do three days’ work in one day.

Today’s frustration #2: I still can’t decide what I’m going to do with the edges of this cover image I’ve been planning for months. Not that it’s so urgent, but I need to do something that doesn’t distract me too much when I’m taking a break.

This is how I make my games :slightly_smiling_face: I like getting the structure down first.

Getting into a bad (IMO) habit of writing on the forum while sleep-deprived but here we are, doing it again! Just gonna throw together all the thoughts I have from all the activity that has happened here recently.

Re: heavy-traffic threads where you can’t easily collect bug reports amongst the chatting: it’s definitely not a perfect solution since I’m sure there will still be some that will fall through the cracks, but I’m a huge fan of using Ctrl + F to find specific keywords on a page (“bug,” I presume is best in this case). Could quickly parse through the posts for the bug reports with that, get those fixed, and then work your way through the rest more slowly after (if you feel so inclined). Though, I don’t know if that will even be needed since I assume most threads are generally manageable. But hey if it helps anyone in any way to bring it up, then poggers.

Re: beta testing: I love the discussions on this. It’s got me thinking about how I wanna do things when it eventually becomes time to do a beta (“eventually” being pretty far)

Re: word count. Heck yeah I count code

The ironic thing about the inability of authors to find dedicated (beta) testers is that there have been multiple ‘Hey, I’d be interested in (beta)testing X kind of games’ threads where multiple (experienced) testers laid out their specializations and interests, but those were not successful because of a lack of interest from the authors’ side of things.
