August 2024 Writer Support Thread

A very good reason to be hopped up, indeed.

I’m unbelievably pissed about this. The way I read the announcement, people can at least avoid the price increase by signing up via on their computer instead of through apple’s app? Did you get the same impression, or am I misunderstanding the new policy

My impression is: anyone using an Apple device, phone, or computer (IOS) will be required to sign up on Apple Pay, and since Apple Pay only allows subscription plans, pre-paid etc., will not be available through them.

My dad is a apple fanatic since the first Apple really. He had to save lots of money to bring one to Spain back then. But Even him is tired of the latest politics of Apple pay. They also are super tiresome to check data and resend security codes and they asked for an additional payment method.

Also we play pokemon go and if you buy stuff from apple app is all far more expensive due the ridiculously high money they charge developers. So we have to buy online on pc to avoid that politics

It seems to me that signing up via browser might be enough for avoiding the cost increase, but that doesn’t change the fact that everyone will be forced to the same billing model, which is my main issue as to why I’ll at least know I won’t be setting up Patreon.

I am trying to get back into writing shape.
I want to finish the preview/proof of concept for my side project until the end of the week. It’s fully written. It’s largely coded. I just got stuck on a scene lol
scr
Afterwards… I have a scene-by-scene plan for the next part of my main project. I started on the first draft. I just need to sit my @ss down and finish it. This is the plan for the rest of the month  And probably beyond, if I’m being honest.
Wishing everyone good luck with their writing :sunflower:

Just dropping by to handle the update to my published game and leave a comment here and there for a few other projects. I might log out again for a bit to focus on finishing my existing projects. Still, it’s good to be back.

Bit of an old discussion, but I’m probably still not using the checkpoint system as I need dashingdon compatibility and the ability to preview save data without loading it. But each to their own. :slightly_smiling_face:

After reading through the comments, I’m curious. Did anyone here who played my game use the save system? I probably won’t change this for Dragon of Steelthorne, but I’m planning to have a higher number of save slots and a soft-restart system for future games. If Scarlet Sorceress is free-to-win, I suppose I could trap the save and restart system with wait timers.

I’m sorry to hear that. I’m not exactly sure what happened. Unfortunately, negativity’s an unavoidable hazard from putting up your work in public, and for what it’s worth, I worry about that all the time too, I don’t have a good solution for that, except to say that if you need to, take some time away to block out the negativity. I did it once. Time is a limited resource for me, but mental health even more so.

Maybe I just can’t grasp what you’re saying because I haven’t slept enough due to trying very hard to finish my thesis, but how do you plan to do that?

The best feeling is when to put another project (a ttrpg module) up for sale so it can finally leave editing/proofreading hell. Nothing better than finishing stuff…

Now I only have 2 projects running…

I always hit some kind of post-project depression after finishing a creative project, so I wouldn’t call it really good, but not having to stress about doing it is certainly always welcome!

Basically, you trigger a 5 minute wait timer every time you save a slot, load a slot or use the soft reset feature.

… then I realize I have other incomplete stuff :scream:

On another note, after some intensive writing, HG has approved the update for Dragon of Steelthorne. It will be released alongside Fields of Asphodel.

And then I realized that I’m behind schedule for my IFcomp entry and have no way of finishing it before the deadline.

But how? Is there a command for “wait for X minutes”? Or would that be a variant of the regular wait timers (can you actually decide where they go and how long they are?) and go away if you pay for the game?

I was wondering for a moment why Fields of Asphodel would have a Dragon of Steelthorne update. Congrats for upcoming release!

Aw, I am sorry! I usually get a massive high from it, because it feels like things are moving forward.

I think it may have something to do with how long and how much I’ve been focusing on it - maybe my brain just doesn’t know what to do with itself when that massive thing just isn’t there anymore. (It took me years to actually be able to look at my Bachelor’s thesis again, and that’s something whose development I’ve been planning on continuing, so, yeah.)

Paradoxically, I can get a massive high from dropping a project.

(…aaaand now I got a wrong song stuck in my head. Great.)

I always feel a bit weird and restless/down after finishing a big project, which is probably part of why I tend to race onto the next project as quickly as I can rather than sitting with that feeling (very psychologically healthy!!)

There is some special code CoG/HG uses in commercial releases. It is what triggers the message that your free trial is over and you need to pay to continue, as well as controlling wait timers for free to win games. Im not sure what the exact code is, this is something HG manages for me. Basically, as an author, all you need to do is tell them where you think the free trial should end, or where the wait timers should go.

I’m chugging along towards my beta, including nailing down the questions I want to ask my testers. I feel like I have a good set, but I’m also curious: for anyone who’s done this process already, I’d love to know what questions you found the most helpful to ask.

I’m assuming you’r not interested in questions for testers of an experimental IF software?

The Honor Bound beta testing has started… and I’m nervous but trying not to be. It always feels really weird waiting, and I always get a bit worried that either everything is held together with dusty sellotape and will fall to bits, or that no one’s interested. Realistically, I know that’s not true but it’s hard not to pay attention to that!

@Sailingshells Some questions I like asking are:
-were there any points where you wanted to make a choice that wasn’t there?
-were there any times where your attention wandered?
-what would you love to see/are you looking forward to later in the game?
-was anything in the game confusing?

Writing status update: I don’t think I’ll want to look into yet another speech synthesizing/recognition software ever again (at least in the next week or so).

I want to scream.
