This must be a Tumblr find, there’s so much activity already ! I’m going to check it out, because people seem to really like it. But I would recommend putting some information in the main post, if the author is on here. If not… I still think some information should be put somewhere
LMAO, same He moved out from the country, his pathetic ass is not moving (on) AGAIN
It seems the writer is more active on Tumblr than on here. She did announce an update on her page instead of here so I suppose she may have a dislike for the forum
Small correction, their kid may be part of MC’s class, but it’s up to the player – MC can be either kindergarten or high school teacher, and, depending on if you select G’s kid as younger or older, they’ll be in the class if their age “matches” it.
There isn’t any “going after MC” content in the game yet, it’s only been like, 2 days.
This is only small part of why MC feels insecure about Rainn. There’s also how well they’re put-together, their charming public persona, super good looks and overall vibe that always makes Rainn the center of attention. MC views themselves as lacking most of these traits.
Is there a discord or something so we will be informed about updates and possibly chatting and have pictures of characters?
I was wondering about this as well, considering it’s not Nik that started or requested the thread - which might be for a reason. But I’m guessing permission isn’t needed from the author to start one? Perhaps she can request it be taken down if she wants? I have seen writers saying more and more lately that they are wary of the forum…
There is an unofficial fan-made discord for Apt 502 but that’s not run or moderated by the author. All the info on the actual game is on her tumblr/blog.
This thread is a split-off from the Twine and other IF thread.
So it’s not really an official thread for the WIP started from the author, it’s a thread started by one of our mods to keep another thread from getting too far derailed.
Ah, thanks so much for letting me know that does make me feel a bit better about this thread popping up here.
Went to check out the Tumbr. First thing I saw was:
Apartment 502 is a 18+ slice-of-life romantic drama inspired by shows like New Girl and Friends .
Which is a relief, in part. Author is not calling it a sitcom anymore, but a romantic drama. But is still citing sitcoms as the inspiration. Which again, kind of leaves us in intent limbo. Many of us find no humor in the situations. Many of us do. And I’m wondering if it’s not one of those “the humor is in the misery” type things which…I really don’t see/agree that we should laugh at abject misery, it just feels so cruel.
And then there’s this, further down that entry:
****** Apartment 502 is a romance, angst, and drama-centered story ******
So I’m really not sure if the author intended to keep the humor tag at this point. It doesn’t really sound like it.
@AnneWest @batmansrobin Yep, this isn’t an author-led WIP thread as it wasn’t created by the author, but I figured it was better to have a dedicated area for discussion - and as it’s a ChoiceScript game, this seems as good a place as any. If the author becomes active here and wants to make a WIP thread herself, I’ll either close this one or merge the threads, whatever she prefers
I guess humor would be mainly in some of interactions between the roommates. The three of them have apparently known one another for the long time, and there’s quite a bit of love/hate back and forth that’d you’d find in the sitcoms.
I think the characters definitely have a charming dramatization that’s reminiscent of a sitcom, and I’m including the MC in that with some of the choices they can make - but things like the breakup (and how heavily the loss of Rain is emphasized) and how the MC feels about it (the options tend to be - numb, crying, angry or trying to move on) are written (successfully, imo) to be painful. It seems to be the setup for the character arc for the MC.
And honestly, even if the breakup was to be written in a more ‘humorous’ fashion, there would still be some that take it very seriously and find it miserable. There’s no avoiding different interpretations.
Yeah, it seems like the sitcom part is because is written as a sitcom; full of silly events and plot points (like the miscommunication between R and MC or C&T’s relationship or the “people forced to live together because of x thing that couldn’t be more different from each other”) and not necessarily because every interaction has a laugh track on it. It’s more than the situation MC finds themselves is what you would find on a sitcom.
Yes, after (another) re-read I’m coming around to considering M a viable option. The rivals/enemies bit isn’t being played up much (at least not yet) which makes it more palatable to me than if it was more of an issue.
The tonal/intent whiplash makes me think it’d be more a Kevin Can Go F*** Himself type show than a straight sitcom, if someone asked me to film it.
Allegedly this is M at their literal best (and they can already act pretty shitty towards MC, more on some job routes than others) so people may be up for a rude awakening when the gloves come off.
Yeah, and if it goes in that direction, M will be off the table again for me. I just don’t see the attraction in enemies-to-lovers paths, or in rivals paths at all. You hate being around me, fine. I won’t be around you if I can possibly avoid it. You feel the need to one up me in everything, fine. I don’t have to participate in your petty childishness, go off and do that in your own dank little corner somewhere.
I do hope it’s not that bad, in a sense that it’s not downright shitty behaviour. I can handle smug and sarcastic banter but I draw the line when it comes to sabotaging and belittling someone.
The angle i found interesting was to have M as former friend, which gives you option to flag them as a person MC has eventually realized they’ve had a crush on. This opens room for a potentially fun dynamics – the backstory i now have for my MC is that realizing she’s had a crush on Mona was a moment that made her question if maybe she’s bisexual rather than straight like she always thought of herself up to that point. It sets up a different tension than the basic rivals/exes.
Narrator voice: It was that bad
This is actually a really cool dynamic to have. I dig this.
