An Unexpectedly Green Journey (orc life-simulator) [1.5+ Million Words] OUT NOW!

Previously I could see the territory I conquered in the statistics tab, but now I can’t see it, is it just me? It would be cool to also have the marking of the territory of the elves, humans and dwarves. Anyway, the game is very good and the author is to be congratulated.

Hi Zoath,

What did you see instead of the territory you conquered? A normal, unmarked, map of the world?

Can you remember what you did just before the territory marked image disappeared?

You can see the map of the world at your birth by clicking on an option in the stats tab. Here, you will see the possessions of the other powers.

Although it is a good idea, and will add to the immersion of the plays, I am unable to make a separate map showing the ebb and flow of other power’s lands. This would involve a massive use of images and very complicated variables liable to mess up.

Every shift of green for your conquests is an entirely new image! The size of the game would get ridiculous, if I did this for every power, for a text game and would take me away from writing for a very long period. Imagine all the variable that would needed to be cross referenced, and then the process of creating an image for each one! It gives me shivers!!!

Cheers for playing and the support!

UPDATE 6 (16th September 2023): 67k words added, totalling 677k)
-I have added an option on the starting screen where a playtester can skip straight to the demonic path. This will not be in the final game, but since this game is pretty large, it’ll help to find bugs and errors. You will start in a meeting with the Emperor. You can still start from scratch though.
-You are the Darkness! Rise from the rank of demonic minion to a demon lord and desecrate the world! Start as a minion with little power and become the apocalypse!
-Manage your new demon powers, Mutate, Possess and Desecrate.
-As the world descends into ruins, read about the decline of civilization with a new page on the Stat screen, showing the diary of a pious monk.
-Diplomatic relations have been replaced with with Terror gauge.
-The map of your conquests had now been replaced to symbolize your spreading taint, showing a spreading fire.
-Build a new army with new demonic units.
-New lore will be revealed as you crush each imperial province.
-Can you take your seat among the thrones of the Powers Beyond and Below?

This ending path has far less to do with being an orc than an agent of demonic powers. It is pretty dark, intentionally lacking hope for the goodies among us. You’ve made your choices and pledged to serve the Powers Beyond and Below and there is no chance of coming back. Of course, you are not forced to go on this evil journey but those of you who enjoy ushering in the doom of everything will be catered for!

Next update(s), I have decided to incorporate the city paths and the wandering paths. Not exactly sure how I will do this at the moment. I will expand the areas your orc can venture into. I plan to add an arena and have quests from an adventurers guild as well as some wandering encounters, enough for an orc to reach old age. Shamans will get distinct events if they choose to take over as their tribe’s shamans and move to Krog’s Rock.

I feel the game is nearing completion, in the sense that the majority of content will soon be there. Though, that is not to say it won’t be ironed out a bit.

I hope you all enjoy and I appreciate any feedback, bug and typo finding.

So, I’m loving the writing for the dark path so far, but I’m having some trouble understanding what to do. I’ve gotten up to the point where I’m attacking the central provinces and trying to bring them under my sway, I’m using the skills that I am strongest in, but literally every single one of them ends with me being too slow and not being able to bring the province under my control. I’m obviously missing something.

For example here are my Possession and Desecration skills. I specialised in Possession and secondary Desecration. I choose all the Possess options in a location first, followed by the Desecration options and then I get told I’ve taken too long?

Hi Lance. Once dealing with the central provinces, it is best to start with Feldhamm and the Thieves Guild. The text states that they are easier to manipulate. The hardest are the wizards.

It is best to focus on one major skill, then have a minor one and discard the third. Not all the central provinces will be doable in one go since each is weaker to a specific skill than others. You will need to try and get at least two on the side to continue.

To win the dark path, you do not need to capture all the central provinces. I wanted to give the impression that, at that point, you are not all-powerful, yet.

I will adjust the text to make it clearer.

Ah, I think I felt like they all had to be conquered because, unlike the previous sections, there was no option to say “Okay, I’m done now, time to move on”. You still have to go to all the provinces, even if you have no chance of capturing it.

Yes, you get to try all the central institutions. If you manage to get control of 2, you get to continue.

This will partly decide what you face in the final battle and could affect the ending slightly.

Have you managed to get past this? I know you know IF games here very well. If it is frustrating, I can add an extra buff a bit earlier, which will mean players are more likely to acquire at least 2 of them.

I just didn’t want it to be just a simple click-and-progress type of thing.

Apart from the wizards each institution is weaker to one of the powers than others. It is mentioned in the text. Go for those which suit your power. I think I will lower the requirement of your secondary, and more minor power to help players here.

I have gotten past. In fact in the end, I captured all of them. It seems there is a lot of weight in the order you do things? Because The Den I tried three or four times doing things in different orders before I realised how to get it. This run through I’m really just enjoying the writing and seeing what happens, I’ll go through for feedback in a little more detail later.

How can I exactly venture in the demonic path?

There is an option when you begin where you can skip straight to it. Meet the emperor then break the seal, rip off his mask and put it on.

So you can jump right in, if you want, and be evil.

If you want to find the path from starting afresh, you need to get your soul corrupted. Some events that let you do this are going into the wizard’s sealed room when you burgle his house when just a young orc. Read forbidden knowledge in Pifagorca’s temple and give in to corruption when fighting the demon orc in the northern caves.

Yes, in that section there is, though in the others it matters much less. The key is to make sure you have one strong power with another, less developed one and it is best to start with the thieves and leave the wizards until last. If you win two places here, you won’t be locked out of a final victory, it will just affect which options you can choose later on.

When capturing an institution, you have 4 tries as time is against you while they grow more resistant. So start with your best power before using the minor to wear them down more quickly.

Oh, you figured it out and won all of them! When I tested it, I couldn’t even do that!!!

To be fair, I don’t think I could have done it playing legitimately. There was a LOT of save scumming done to figure it out.

Also, is it possible to cull the dark powers at the end? None of them take me up on the power sharing offer and I can’t remember there being opportunities to befriend or sway them, so I always just get killed if I try to take power.

If you ask The Lord or The Lady for help in the final battle, they might help later.

But… some are not as trustworthy as others.

(And you, being the evilest git of all, might not be trustworthy either… even if they do help you)

Hey @NumberedEntity really enjoying the story so far. Beautiful writing and I like how I decide the options for my orc.

Issue I’m facing is I was working so hard to increase my stats but as soon as I get to the menu to build cities or stage a coup, my stats decrease back to 40.

I had Presence at 81, Strength at 74, Cunning at 35, Apetite at 18 and Constitution at 60 but now they back in the 40s

Not sure if it’s an error.

Thanks

Hi dp544,

Thanks for playing. Glad you’re enjoying it so far.

Do all of your stats drop back?

When you say ‘stage a coup’, are you referring to overthrowing your chief? If you fail to gather support, your stats will be hit negatively, but not if you succeed.

The city section stops abruptly at the moment as it is not completed. Though it shouldn’t drop your stats.

Can you let me know the exact section? I will dabble around and have a deep dive to find it!

Cheers!

EDIT: During the coup against Morgorc you will very likely take a big hit to your HORDE stat, and if you use the dark powers your PIETY takes a large knock, which should bump up INFAMY. You CONSTITUTION also has a good chance to take a beating

Though, later, you will be able to rebuild your HORDE and heal your CONSTITUTION.

The battle with Morgorc is a big moment and will affect your stats. STRENGTH shouldn’t;t be affected negatively, much.

Was it a problem specifically for the cities?

Not specifically.

it was when the options started showing like this not sure which path I took that affected the stats but I did not start the coup section yet. It was when the options started showing like this.

If I remember correctly, I think I descended to the Zathultta(or something like that) and I was defeated and woke up outside the clan😅

And can I request if you could add a cheat option(for testing purposes), would really appreciate it

I just played the new update and on the inner providences I can get the first one I click on but I can get the other 3, I did beat the update and I loved it. Keep up the good work :+1:

@Nathan_Wolverton

Hi Nathan, cheers for playing through the game. I think you have also done so for the king path too?

I love that you’ve enjoyed being EVIL!!!

Yes, the inner provinces are very beatable. There are prompts in the text to offer guidance.

Even if you fail at controlling the first province, your skills, if they have a minor effect, will still increase.

Here, I wanted to have the player not succeed in everything (although you can), just to give them that slight feeling of vulnerability. In my mind, it would help to keep the tension, despite you becoming a demon lord.

@dp544

Ah! Yes, the stats drops are from Zthullu. Those are cursed lands, deathly lands. Nothing good comes out of Zthullu and those that go in never come back quite the same…

EDIT: I think that is very doable, to add a cheat mode in the next update for testers and players while the game is in development. I imagine I could add it to the stat screen for your main stats. Although, many events are dependent on many, many hidden factors.

Cheers to both of you!
