An Unexpectedly Green Journey (orc life-simulator) [1.5+ Million Words] OUT NOW!

Hi Damnjackson,

Do you remember what you were doing when this happened? It will help me track it down.

I found a misaligned page break in one of the new scenes on that line and adjusted it. Not sure if that was the exact error you found.

It appears after choosing either option “Build an orc capital to rival Grandardgard” and “Enact plans for mass baborc planting”

Let me know if you still get it now. It works on my end but DashingDon is good at catching errors the CSDIE tools don’t.

EDIT: I fiddled with it a bit more. I feel it should be okay now, once the scenes have been reuploaded. I think I know what happened.

If it still happens I’ll figure out another way of doing it.

Cheers!

I got the same problem both with the mass baborc planting and after 2nd choice after choosing to build capital. I chose to spend gold to hire human and then provide luxuries after which i cant proceed further.

In both the paths the bug appeared when Nocan died.

Hmm. It could be an issue with nesting events in those parts. I have added more labels to make the code easier to read for DashingDon.

Every time you work on your kingdom, it adds a value that activates cyclopes events. Then, within those events, you get the usual choices before going back to decide on the future of your kingdom.

I have simplified it a bit now and just uploaded the file. Let me know if it works. It might take a while for things to update server side.

Cheers for hunting that out!

EDIT: Okay, so I have run it through CSIDE and played with a ‘tster’ start from the point where you are proclaimed king. It works there. Hopefully with the changes I have made, the identified error will not come up on DashingDon.

If it continues, I will have to rearrange the code. Fingers crossed!

Thanks Elemental.

All the recent errors are pointing at one line. I am not sure why it is happening as it is referring to a boolean which must be either true or false.

I am asking around the forums for help!

Cheers!
EDIT: I have uploaded another fix, though I still can’t confirm if it works on DashingDon yet.

EDITEDIT:

I have created a new variable that does not reference the one that seems to be causing the problem. This should now run fine, but if it crops up again, it may well be in a place I’m not looking.

@CaesarCzech posted some testing tools. It will be very helpful for me to check these things out now I’ve got a big chunk of the story to test. I just need to figure out how to use them after a night’s sleep.

Cheers.

@NumberedEntity Ugh author sorry for disturbing you but the error change into another error

Same.

I think the error is because of the old saves. I had to restart. When I got to where the error was it didn’t appear

Hi Jackson,

Just got back to this.

I have reached this conclusion too.

The value causing the conflict has been changed from a numeric value to a boolean since the update. The problem is with using old saves.

This game is a WIP and these errors will crop up at times using old saves.

I STRONGLY advise player to use new saves. Hope this fixes the issues.

Fucking BRAVO. If you can keep the other paths to this level of detail and fulfilling emotional conclusion I honestly think this has the potential to be one of the best CoG games out there and easily THE best life sim game. I’ve only had the chance to do one path (I did the Krog blessed path obviously) but I can’t wait to try the others and see the different variations. I went for a orc focused but not completely war like run, subjugating the other races rather than wiping them out completely and being proclaimed the Hieroarch of all of Arbit.

The conclusion was perfect and exactly what I wanted from the conclusion of an epic life sim. I especially loved getting to influence the royal crop and see my successor be chosen (gotta love my dragon boy). I don’t know whether you were nervous about it or not, but I think you really stuck the landing on the ending here.

This is a huge update, but will try and provide some notes on bugs/typos and any continuity errors on my next run through. I did notice some issues with visitors to the throne room not going away once you had dealt with their issue, but I’ll take more detailed notes on the next run.

The error is due to a change of data type in an old variable. Old Saves will encounter this error. I would advise restarting with a fresh save.

Thanks Lance for the great comments!

I think this will be the most detailed path, much to do with the sheer nature of what you can achieve. The Dark Path will be more limited since you have chosen to be outright evil to get here, no point in quibbling with morality for the rest of your life.

But I hope to give weight to the choice non-king orcs will make.

I thought that it would be rewarding for players who’ve gone through the whole game to get an overview, of sorts, and a tantalising snippet for a potential future.

Just a note for future playthroughs if you manage to reach Krog and choose to argue with him or fight him and succeed, you’ll beat the cyclopes. I thought, by this stage, the player had earned the glory.

I will check through the throneroom stuff and check the variables.

One of my goals for this section of the game was to give the player a chance to do a bit of domestic rulership to get them to bond more with their kingdom. Then, with the new war report and creeping cyclopes doom, try to make the player feel threatened, even helpless.

All to make the ending, hopefully, more poignant.

With the throne room, the way it is supposed to work is that new events should appear every time you take a major action outside of the throne room. Some events will also disappear, only to come back later. Seems not to have worked the way I intended but it is fixable!

Always feel a bout of anxiety before putting my stuff out for people to see. It is the part that helps me get the work done, to know others can read through and experience the world, but once I stick it out there I have a few days of listless worry that everything will collapse. Though the process of writing and submitting stories is always one where you have to learn to accept rejection :confounded:

I have implemented many ideas from players here but I do have a form vision. I am not going to radically change my plans but am willing to make additions. In many ways, this makes it even more satisfying to get good feedback and know that people enjoy the game.

I plan to release it on Hosted Games when done. Hopefully, as long as it is not typo-ridden, it might be enjoyed by a wider audience too.

Cheers, Lance for seeing it through to the end!

EDIT: Have simplified some of the variables used to pick throne room events. They should work better now.

Did you get to meet the blond dragon lady who is absolutely not Emilia Clarke to get the dragon scale or did you beat the dragon in the Western Hills to get it?

I met legally distinct Daenerys… there’s more than one way to get it??? The depth of different events you have written is mind blowing.

EDIT: Just realised you meant the normal dragon fight. I did that as well but don’t remember getting a dragon scale from it (though I could have missed it, I do skim through the earlier chapters now having read them so many times). I’ll have to look out for it on the next run.

Is the dragon taming path not implemented or did I miss it?

@WarArtist

Lots of spoilers here.

You can kill the dragon in the Western Hills and get a dragon scale.

Alternatively, if you follow the culture of the embassy path, you get a throne room visit. If you manage to get a harbour from the halfling lands, and then build a navy, you will receive a special visitor. if you help her cross the Wide Drown Ocean, she’ll give you a dragon scale.

This can be used in the royal baborc crop to give you a successor.

Also, she will gift you a dragon when the cyclopes besiege Krog’s Rock City.
