An Absinthian Ballad (Mini-Update 29.07.18)

My question is how did it become patriarchal I I not Religion because that is too simple of an answer.

PS I love learn more of the Lore and history.

What is this a diabolik lovers episode? xD

I would love to learn about your world

I would love to learn more about the lore of this world!

We can end up as a doll. Hmm… What? :open_mouth:

Apparently.

Now the question is how creepy that bad ending will be.

  • Will it be the creepy version in which the MC is turned into a literal (toy)doll by magic.

  • The creepier one, where she is brainwahed and/or so broken either by mundane or magic means, so she essentially ends up as a living doll.

  • Or the creepy to the max version, where the MC is killed and taxidermied into a ā€œdollā€ by complete non-magical means.

Another question is also who is the cause of the MC being turned into a doll. If it’s one of the RO’s then congratulations, we found our yandere!

What kind of romance games have you guys been playing? But now that you mentioned it, will there be any kind of magical and fantastical elements in the game? Or is the low in low-fantasy more prominent?

And also, what in the world is a ā€œyandereā€?

Yandere is a character who seems to be nice amd sweet at first glance but once you become their bf/gf/significant other/their crush, they become very possessive to the point that they will lock you up in a cage so that other people come near you or talk to you. XD

Usually not very dark ones. :stuck_out_tongue: But I do have a fondness for horror as well (even though I’m a huge chicken and gets scared way too easily)

To put it simple: it’s a otome-game stereotype/trope, usually used for a RO who’s pretty normal on the surface and tends to be obsessive and possessive underneath that (which as far as I’ve learned are often released in full, during bad ends :/). They have a tendency to fall into the ā€œif I can’t have you then nobody canā€ camp or the ā€œgetting rid of potental competitionā€ camp. It’s usually hidden from the player, if a character is a yandere, so sometimes people joke and discuss if they can ā€œspot the yandere among the RO’sā€. Some more details can be seen at http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Yandere. I’m usually not a big fan of that kind of character as a RO, but some people do.

I agree with you. I usually stay clear of these type of ROs but I first encountered this type when I was playing Amnesia Memories, I didn’t know that the first route I was playing was a yandere when you get his bad end. shudder

Anyway, I am glad that Lothar seems not to be that type of RO since I’m planning to do his route first. XD

Their routes tend to escalate so quickly. - _-

And I am with you on Lothar. He might have a lot of bad endings, but doesn’t sem like a yandere to me. …but then again that could be wistful thinking, and instead we were completely off and both picked the yandere. xD

Almost done with my tests this week, just one more to go tomorrow! I’m slowly piecing together a coherent post about the continent, so that should come by sometime soon.

I might be able to put up a small update tomorrow or Saturday, finishing the current scene. I don’t have a tutorial, and I only have an online test, so I should be fine for time. I’ll spend most of the weekend cleaning up some stat checks and adding in maybe another scene.

@Rogar Well, she founded the Grand Duchy of Trepheliya by conquering about five countries, and Alayonte was very afraid of her during her short reign, since she can be summed up as a mad genius tactician.

@cookiemonsta I refuse to play Diabolik Lovers. Normally I quite like the darker otome games, but it just doesn’t seem to click with me.

@Anathema @Ventura :upside_down_face::upside_down_face::upside_down_face: This world is quite mysterious in its workings. Could be magic, could be drugs, could be a medical genius, who knows? As for creepy, there’s two variations of it planned. Depending on how you read it, one is much worse than the other.

For the fantasy part, depending on the route, there could be little to no fantasy, or a lot. Lothar’s route will feature a lot more magic, since he is an arcanist and that’s part of his job, but generally, it’s pretty low-key. Magic isn’t used in most people’s lives, but there are whole cults and organizations that use magic for daily things, but that’s a totally different story.

As for romance games, I play a lot, and if interested, they’re under the cut. I think my favourites reflect a lot on the ROs and how the romances play out. If you’re not interested in my long gush over otome games, the tl;dr is I apparently have an affinity towards yanderes, and I’ve gotten good enough to spot them in descriptions. It’s both a blessing and a curse because all my top faves are yanderes. Not sure if I should be worried or not lol.

Otome/Romance Games
  • Nightshade: It’s definitely one of the better ones I’ve played. Kuroyuki and Gekkamaru are my absolute favourites because their routes just tore my heart out and shredded it to pieces :upside_down_face: I also love Goemon, he’s so precious, but not as precious as Kuroyuki, my sweet yandere.
  • Ozmafia: #HamelinDidNothingWrong #JusticeForHamelin My poor boy! Hamelin, Kyrie, Soh, and Caramia are my favourite routes to play, despite Hamelin’s routes just tearing me apart.
  • Nameless: Tei, Yeonho, and Nameless are my favourites, and I’m not sure if I should be worried over how much I love them. I guess they’re sort of hints for the game?? I mean, Tei’s voice is so good, but I should have known better. Of course he was a yandere.
  • Cinderella Phenomenon: #JusticeForVarg 'Nuff said. I fell more for him that Fritz, but I guess I like his cute self too.
  • Monochrome Heaven: Another game that could kind of allude to how some routes may play out?? It’s super depressing, but I got hooked off of the building plot. I didn’t expect to like Ryuuto as much as I did and should I be worried that I like him at all?
  • Ikemen Sengoku: I love them all. They’re all fantastic and I love it to bits. I love Yukimura to bits, but I think Kenshin, Mitsuhide, and Shingen are going to overtake him once they come out in NA. I just got a Kenshin phone stand, and I remember seeing the art before it was released and going ā€˜he’s my favourite.’ Then I started playing the JPN version and hoo boy, he’s a yandere.
  • Destined to Love: One of the best mobile games. Okita, Haru, and Hijikata are great. They’re all great.
  • Mystic Messenger: Just started it and I love it. Zen is the only one I’ve completed endings for right now, but Unknown looks pretty cute and promising. Too bad he doesn’t have a route though. I feel bad that I liked Zen’s first bad ending though.

There are a few games I’m not too proud to say I like playing, like Lust in Terror Manor, Samurai Night Romance, Secrets in Spades, Princess of the Moon, Les Fleursword, and those kind of games. They’re trashy,
but I actually like the premises of some of them.

As you can tell, I’ve got a lot of faves who are yanderes and I just…I don’t even know anymore. If you’ve played any or even all of these, there are a lot of hints toward the ROs, how the romances will build, how they’ll work, and the kind of endings too.

@resuri08 I played Amnesia and I’m not a real fan. MC is a real idiot, like, she makes Fuka from Ozmafia look smart. I don’t like Toma at all, and I think he’s a real crappy yandere. Like, nothing about his character really clicked. He was way better in Shin’s, and if he was like that in his route, he would have been a great yandere. His good end really ticked me off.

Now, is there a yandere? Who could it be? I’ve played games where all of them are yandere, see Monochrome Heaven, Nameless. Is it Oskar? Lothar? Edmund? So many questions, only so many spoilers I can give away.

I know it’s pretty shite I was young and stupid eww
Also THANK YOU about Amnesia that otome is so stupid in general ghh 3x

And then in the end it turns out it was the MC who was the yandere all along! (which would actually be interesting. I haven’t really seen that before. I also wonder how the game would turn out if both the RO and the MC were yanderes. ^^)

To be fair, she had absolutely no memories. I’d be pretty out of it too.

ā€œYou play otome games?!ā€

I play all sorts of visual novels if they seem interesting enough (story and/or characters-wise). Demographic target means nothing to me.

This seems pretty interesting.

Also, I suggest not adding in a lover after the MC chooses her husband. It seems to go against what you’re trying to do.

From what I’ve seen, a good or true end in a (romance) visual novel has the MC be together with their loved one at the end with the prospect of marriage while completely blind to any other potential takers.

Having a main and a side sounds more like a bad ending to an adult otome game (apparently they have those).

Oh, and a character doesn’t necessarily need to be in the relationship for a yandere to get possessive. They’ll just convince themselves you haven’t realized your feelings for them or confine you even if you hate them.

Worse case is an MC getting killed ā€œso they never look at anyone elseā€ or something. shudders

Makes me wonder why they have some popularity.

I would guess for some it has to do with exploring and/or just enjoying some pretty dark themes, but with the safety of it not being real. But I think all the yandere-lovers in this thread can answer that better.

As someone who personally loves horror (I especially find psychological horror fascinating) I do find yanderes interesting in regards to a character study. I just don’t personally enjoy them much as LI’s. ^^

Regarding the lover, maybe you could have it as an option to create drama between you and the LI? Because while I do agree with @Scorpio00, it could sometimes be useful to move plot along? Like for the Duke’s route it could be an effort to make him jealous during the courting stage from an immature MC as a way to show him that she has options? So it could be a driving factor towards his realisation of him wanting to do more than screw her or a factor in her condemnation as a future wife.

Finished the scene, but I’ve decided to hold out until I finish the next one because it was such a small addition. Next scene will be meeting a sort-of-important character, then I’ll start the RO meeting scenes. I just need to power through the next week and I should be fine ^^ Definitely there will be an update this weekend, just not sure how large.

@Ventura One of the band endings in Nameless is sort of that. I think it was in Yeonho’s route that she just sort of flipped and became a yandere for him, which was kind of funny, since he is a bit yandere (or clingy, depending on how you define it and how you read it). But I’m sure there’s a game like that out there.

@Scorpio00 Thanks for your input, it’s very useful to read other people’s thoughts! I do agree that a lover should not be added in after the courtship, generally, but there is an exception to that because I can see it leading to a bad ending. But yes, for the good endings, being faithful to him is the top requirement. As for adult otome, absolutely! A lot of those games aren’t translated, and then there are also drama cds. I kind of really enjoy them??

Now, why yanderes can get so popular, it’s a bit hard to explain. I love them, personally, though I would never find them attractive in real life. For me, I love the slight psychological thrill, as in, when will they snap, when will it show, how does it show, etc. I also love a lot of their backstories, character designs, and 99% of the time, I’ll love the CV (Kenshin from Ikemen Sengoku, Haru from Destined to Love JPN, and Tei from Nameless, to name a few).

@awkward_viking That was my plan all along ^^ Edmund is the only who would not take it as a massive affront, since he’s doing the same. It doesn’t even have to be an immature move, rather, more of a pragmatic move. You have to get married, there’s no changing that, and if he’s not interested in it, you still have to secure your own future. And of course, the drama! I’m a sucker for dramatic love triangles.
