I haven’t seen any of those but I have read the manga called Black Clover and in the manga all the magic is based around grimoires.
grimoire from Trinity Seven in human form and book form
And heres the grimoire thats in human form from
Demonbane
Well the grimoire in this story are the size of text books
. Right now I don’t see how useful it is for your grimoire to turn human in this story but if I think of something or you have a idea I will think of adding it as the grimoires master level ability.
I’m not an anime person so to me a book that changes into a human pushes my 4th-wall of acceptance.
A Grimoire with an intelligence equal to or even higher than human level attached to it I am ok with but not the book turning into a human… or any animal for that manner - it seems to me that would be a familiar and cross boundaries.
Yah I was originally going to have the Grimoires be able to communicate with the MC as they grow stronger from turning it’s pages to a page by itself → writing entry’s to communicate → and lastly able to just fully communicate by talking. But if more people want the turning human thing I’ll consider it. I’m a people pleaser lol.
It’s magic…I will admit it’s awfully odd, but I really don’t see much of a difference between it transforming and the book having it’s own intelligence, after all it could be someone cursed into the form of a book and can only regain human form for limited reasons or something [shrug] seems a silly thing to quibble over when you, again, are dealing with magic
Oh wow!? That’s actually a pretty good idea! Good job. If I do include it that could be the perfect reason why it turns human! Thank you for that great idea!
I know this is influenced by anime genre and its unique take on story-telling… I think you should make sure you don’t corner yourself into it being a pure anime project though because a lot of your readers (especially in the general public) who buy on Apple store and Steam will be fantasy oriented readers too.
The difference is: the Grimoire isn’t human. Its a different type of intelligence.
Magic is not a everything is possible thing - it has its own rules and logic in each author’s universe. In this case (or in my own personal case) I was brought up on fantasy stories and myth and mythology, so a lot of the heavy anime things break that 4th wall of believable story-telling.
I’m not saying my view is the exclusive or only “correct” view but what this is getting into is just too far over established boundaries for me.
I hope @OracleD3 chooses a beta tester like me, because if everyone is a pure anime junkie in his testing group then he may not get feedback which represents some of his targeted audience.
Magic is cool but its not god-intervention miracles … ymmv but that’s my view.
I don’t watch anime myself, I’m just saying that accepting a smart talking book, but not accepting a book that changes into human form is a distinction that boggles my mind when you’re already dealing with magic in the first place. [shrug] I wasn’t trying to make you mad about it or start some silly fight or anything, I was just saying I didn’t understand why you thought there was a significant difference between the two.

If I came of as upset, mad or angry, I’m sorry - I was trying to just talk things out. No silly fight. I promise. I am wounded from silly fights as it is… I was just giving feedback to try to help. We are too much alike to fight anyways. ![]()
Now to focus on the crux of the matter: [quote=“Lizzy, post:1116, topic:20209”]

Its just my view - Daniel can ignore my feedback if he chooses but since I really like his work and am very interested in this story I felt I should give him my feedback either way.

Actually this story is mostly based on Witch tv shows such as Charmed and American Horror Story: Coven I only used anime to describe your MC because it’s more easier to find images using Anime style than other things. I agree and it is mostly fantasy oriented because that’s my favorite genre to read.

I also have grew up on mythology, fantasy stories, and myths but I’m no expert. Lol they are a big influence on some of my other works. Hmmm if you are as knowledgeable as you say, your input could be a big help to the story and also help me from making too big mistakes on some of the magic in the story. I’m thinking of having 5 beta testers once I finish the writing if your interested one of the spots can be yours maybe when the time comes for beta testers.

Oh good, fights just lead to guilt and crying for me, I have more than enough of that already ![]()
I believe I suggested a gargoyle form for the bat familiar and a tengu form for the crow familiar. I know someone suggested one for the dog too. A shadow beast maybe? I can’t remember. If not that maybe you could make it a werewolf? Unless you have them in some other capacity. I think you mentioned something about magical creatures. The opposum is tough though, I can’t think of a magical/demonic type of form for it.
Im going to post this here just for fun of it XD
Grimoires are texts filled with unholy and otherworldly knowledge. While most grimoires have a soul of their own, given enough time or exposure to power, they can gain the ability to manifest themselves in the human form…
I got this from Demonbane
think about like this
A grimoire is a magic book right if it can find a way to talk to somehow then its not impossible for it take a form of a human or an animal
Magic sometimes have no logic in a fantasy type world
Also this just me talking, magic is view differently too people then some.
P.s some or most people here watch anime’s , read manga’s or both
@Eiwynn but i do understand wat you’re saying
Magic sometimes have no logic in a fantasy world
This is my opinion only -
This is something we disagree on - sometimes the logic is its own unique logic and sometimes it is twisted logic but to be “believable” to the majority of people reading the story, every author should have some sort of logic to their magic system.
Divine Intervention or miracles of one nature or another is a different can of worms.
This is just my feedback on what makes a story better then others… I meant no disrespect to you or your views, only that we disagree. Both of our goal here is to help @OracleD3 make a better story, so the more feedback he gets the better …
Anime has its roots in Eastern based cultures - my strength is Western-based culture stuff … both viewpoints can add perspective to help Daniel.
Its nice too see other people view when it comes too magic

I think there are two main ways of writing about magic, which the author Brandon Sanderson talks about quite a bit, here. Essentially, Hard Magic is very well-defined by the author, and understood by the readers and the characters, while Soft Magic is generally poorly-defined, and the reader and most characters have no clue how it works. That doesn’t make Soft Magic bad, for example, both Lord of the Rings and A Game of Thrones use Soft Magic without being bad stories. What it does mean is that a good story using Soft Magic can’t use that magic to solve the plot (would LotR have been as exciting if Gandalf had just teleported them directly to Mount Doom?), while a Hard Magic story can (Harry Potter isn’t exactly Hard Magic, but Harry does win using rules of magic clearly set up earlier, so it probably counts here).
Since we play the witch, this game would probably have to use Hard Magic, so, yes, rules and logic will be necessary. Of course, this doesn’t mean you can’t have a grimoire that magically transforms into a human, just that you need it to make sense.
ya i was the one suggesting a shadow hound i was wondering what became of that did it become official or do we not know what they look like yet.
While I totally agree with what you are saying - I’d still posit that magic in stories like Lord of the Rings work because, even as ill-defined as it is, it still is defined. The Grey and White wizards for example add definition to LoR magic - soft or otherwise.
Amine based on Eastern (usually Japanese or Korean but not always) definitions may not work in stories like this one.
I also agree that this story is magic-centric and thus should be “hard-magic constructed”
