A Specter Over Kilerth

Okay, aside from asking for more save slots (seriously, I NEED to replay some of the scenes!) let me just say

I fucking love Bhija. I picked the ‘woo the spirit’ route and I’ll be damned if it didn’t deliver. Getting to cruelly prank some molester, spirit flaunting her tits at me, and those headpats are just… chef’s kiss. Hope for more, and hope for being able to do something seductive for her in turn, she might want to wear the pants in this relationship, but I do think she’ll adore us trying to be proactive.

@Gapaot Dashingdon says to not put more than 6 save slots otherwise I would. Not sure what happens if you do; it might start getting buggy

I’m glad you’re enjoying Blihja. She’s definitely the funnest character to write

Other games seem to do fine with more save slots, but I’m no programmer so if you say so. There are just so many things I want to come back to

And Blihja definitely is the type I enjoy. Maybe bit more caring than she currently is, but we’ll work on that, and she does mellow down once I agree to actually work with her. And I can’t wait to see wild ghost romance and all the possibilities in bedroom haha

oh cool, I’ll see about adding more then.

Everyone, I know that it must be frustrating for the people who care about this story, and want to see it finished, to see it go at a snail’s pace for four years. I’ve started other WIPS and even published multiple other stories since I started The Enchanter’s Misery, yet I’m not even halfway done. And for that I apologize, and I’m sorry. Even though I have my own desires and my own mental health to worry about, I also have to consider the people who are supporting me and enjoying the art I created.

I think before, I was scared to finish the story. I knew that the characters were too complex, the world and the lore too deep, the plot too complicated, and the pacing too sharp yet delicate, for me to even consider writing. That’s why I stalled and procrastinated, and nearly even abandoned The Enchanter’s Misery.

However, after finishing and publishing The Mage’s Adventures, The Pernicious Panacea, and The Nascent Necromancer, and starting my most ambitious and personally important and closest work, The Cruel Gaurdians, I believe I’m ready. After all of my experiences, I have what it takes to write this murder mystery that will break your heart at least once.

I’m going to get The Enchanter’s Misery published in 2023.

Minor update:

  • There are now 10 save slots instead of 6

I was messing around with AI art and wound up with this one that I think is pretty cool

Great update! I said previously that I really liked how last chapter had the MC considering their friends to be like family, and this chapter showcases those relationships so well. Whether it was Envy and the MC splashing each other in the pond, or Envy, Skarro, and Zendi dancing together, it was great to see this group having fun. I’m incredibly suspicious of Captain Durj going after Blihja, though. Something is going to go wrong, like them deciding to team up and take over Killerth.

(+3 Agility, +1 Charisma, Gained Sturdy Boots, -7 Coins)
The boots were six coins, not seven.

Looking forward to chapter seven! :relaxed:

I’m really loving the character interactions and relationships, which are both things I look for first in interactive fiction.

And just… the found family aspects… :smiling_face_with_tear:

I’m new to your work, but this project has me checking out your other works! I’m looking forward to seeing your progress on this, and also being a part of release day.

I made a poll in the original post to see who you all romanced.

Personally I split my attention between Blihja, Envy and Zendi.

You see, I’ve genuinely tried to romance Weden, but his scenes are usually Blihja-adjacent and her antics and her fit stomach and tits she’s flashing always grag me in. Dude got the worst timing ever.

Weden comforted MC, so… naturally, he captured me.

I love all of your games, and this one no different! I was stuck between Weden and Oztiak for romances. I can’t wait to see where this goes!

So, as I’ve been getting back into writing The Enchanter’s Misery again, I’ve realized more and more that I’m very unhappy with the content in its current state. Most of it was written in 2018. Back then, I had a very different writing style, and I was basically writing the story as I went, with almost no planning or outline.

I’m going to go back and rewrite the first six chapters of the story to bring them up to the quality of my current writing style, and to make sure that everything flows smoothly and is informed by my outline.

It shouldn’t take all that long, since I will still be working heavily from the older versions of the chapters, but until the new version of the first chapter is ready, I’ve taken down the demo.

Major update:

Chapter One of the rewrite is up. The last 2/3s of the story will mostly be the same to what I already planned, but most of what comprised of the old demo will be rewritten. Also, as you can see, I’ve changed the title.

I was anticipating the rest of the series being titled “The Warlock’s Torture”, “The Wizard’s Torment” and “The Conjurer’s Insanity”. Thanks for scuppering my hopes!

Feedback:

I’ve tried out most of your games, and I have to say, I honestly don’t understand why there are all so similar. It makes it extremely hard to get into anything new that you write.

You start out in a small medieval fantasy town as a novice magic user, and are thrust into an adventure featuring either ghosts or demons as the main threat/villain. You always have almost the same exact list of spells/powers every time. You are always some kind of village reject/outcast and it always has something to do with your abilities/family, which is always kept vague. The love interests always consist of the same generic archetypes. You have to either expel a demon/deity/ghost at the end. They even all have similar titles. Yet you never make an Enchanter feel any different at all from a Magician, a Mage, or even a Necromancer. To me, all of your newer works feel like rewrites of your original Demon Hunter books.

Now, someone might bring up another author like Lucid who also has his own signature style, but see, every single Lucid game feels completely different, even when he returns to his signature genre, fantasy. He’s adept at making these big, stat-based sim games where you can expect to embrace a completely different role than the last, even though he’s relied on a specific core set of mechanics for years. His most recent game, Life of a Starship Captain, contains every single Lucid trope from the past five or so years. But it still manages to be mostly fresh, because he picks a new setting and plot every time and takes good advantage of it.

I feel like you’re trying to do the same thing, Sam, but in my opinion, you’re on the opposite end of the spectrum. All of your recent games are too samey. Necromancer feels no different than this or Burden. Or again, your original books.

Sadly, Mysteries feels that way, too. It feels…uninspired. Like you keep trying to nail a very specific story but no telling will ever turn out good enough. Now, this new installment could be a turnaround, but that’s what I’m saying. Not from the small slice you’ve already put out. I’ve never read your work before recently, but, having binged through good chunks of your library of work, its clear this problem seems to have persisted. I’m honestly shocked no one has pointed it out before. You’re obviously not the only one on here with this problem, but with how many books you put out, I thought it needed to be stated.

Because of this saminess across your body of work, it also makes things impeccably boring. I feel like I’ve done it all before, every time. I’m a DnD player who loves when I get the ability to be a mage or a wizard. A game like Necromancer should have been right up my alley, a day one purchase, even. But my I had no confidence in the quality, and I was proven right in the end. It’s all the same cynical, moody fantasy trot with another cynical, moody, outcasted character who wields the same magic and same stats with the same characters in the same exact setting every single time.

In my opinion, you never change the setting, MC, romance, magic, origin story, roles, villains, monsters, genre, nothing. And so it is impeccably tiresome to even test.

This is all just my honest thoughts, of course, meant to encourage and uplift, not break down. Whatever you decide to do, I wish you the best of luck.
