A SHRIEK OF ASH AND FIRE 1(WIP) [approx 110K UPDATE, 995K+ TOTAL-29th May 2025] (1.14 Million on Patreon)

@ChanceOfFire

I am of the same school as you, although it is good to know how others think about this. Purely cosmetic changes are easy- just plop them in and forget about it. But then, most will want a payoff from the majority of their customization choices.

Generally speaking, I do not intend to add purely cosmetic choices or to force fit in new customization choices. I have to keep within my scope, as this game will become larger anyway without constantly adding new β€˜features.’ But something which is optional and easy to implement is not beyond my consideration.

If we think about it, BG3 lets you customize a lot about your character’s appearance, most of this (beyond race) goes uncommented on by the NPCs.

Something I may do later, as you suggested, is to add an optional customization choice, for appearance, and then display the result on the stats screen. This will be purely β€˜textually cosmetic’ though. This can be added much, much later. Or I might do it on a whim, on a day when I can’t see myself doing something demanding due to the turbulence of life.

@Valixon

Thanks Valixon!

I do not want to give too much away, but the fort’s arrival will mark a significant boiling over of tensions.

Whatever happens, your crawler will still have its mission to reach the far side of Zthullu- though the crew may, or may not, be structured the same way it was before.

Also, in this update or the next (probably)- we might find out what has happened to the Dark Elves.

Cheers to both of you!

EDIT: 13th July 2024

Krog Pile Can Have Patrons Now!

With a tentative start to our Krog Pile Patreon, I’ve added a few things. I’m new to all this so consider it a bit of an experiment!!!

Several ancient manuscripts exploring the history of Krog Pile are free for all members. We have musings on magic, orc romance and the Big Bellies. These have all been reworked from Tumblr posts and put in their proper context,

For members, we have the first Basilisk File, an official document painting a profile of the leader of the Roachpedes, Father Roach.

We also have a map detailing very ancient Behatland, showing the original expanse of the Netherwood, when the world persisted in peace. Here, you can see the original locations of all the major races, Most are mere blips upon the landscape, yet to make their mark upon the history of the world.

We also have a sneak peek developer update on what I’ve been working on this past week.

As for uploads for those on the Krog Tier (none at the time of writing), I will initially hope to place a working build of A Shriek of Ash and Fire at the end of every week, or so.

This will mean the update will build up over the month. At present, I plan to release the whole end-of-month (or so) build on the Choice of Games Forum. Once we have some Krog Tier patrons, the monthly build will be held here to ensure these patrons get month-long, exclusive, access before it is released on the forums.

Check it out if you want.

@Adai_Ahmad @Neelm

By β€˜harem,’ do you mean gathering up a load of romantic admirers?

Though there will be a smattering of both love and lust in this game, it is mostly focused on adventure and revolution. No lusty hordes pining over the MC here :frowning:

11 Likes

I think it’s about poly romance option not just harem.

Will this like the Green adventure having HP and Stats management?

2 Likes

Hi Kagara,

Hmm, I haven’t really thought about that too much. You will have a few ROs woven into the story BUT…

The focus of this game is not romance. There might be a clash of potential love interests and there might be options to have romantic encounters with more than one person but there won’t be a specified poly route.

As to stats- these do exist. However, I do not intend for the player to excessively check them. As well as stats, players attain β€˜skills’ which automatically pass certain stat checks (for example, β€˜sleight of hand’ and β€˜sneak’ can pass lots of the dexterity-related checks, even if your dexterity is low).

I hope that this way if you know your MC well, you won’t really have to check your stats at all unless you want to :smiley:

The first half of next month’s update is available on my shiny new Patreon. I’m still experimenting with the best way to do this with links- pictures will not show up, though there are only a few.

This is the early access to part of next month’s update, at 42k it brings the total word count to 195k. Of course, on the Krog Tier, you get access to all the other bits of lore goodies. Many of these are also free to anyone who becomes a member.

In the update, you, Sera and Vin are ordered to head out into Zthullu, with a band of marines, to investigate the sighting of enemy vehicles and acquire a secret weapon.

-Also, you get to see some orcs, other than Vin!

In an intense action scene, you will engage in high-speed combat and uncover a secret capable of changing the balance of power in the ash lands forever.

This is a Work In Progress- any help with bugs and typos is much appreciated!

I expect the update to be released on DashingDon during the first couple of weeks of next month.

I also expect to have more than this in the final update.

Patreon is linked in the introduction post.

Cheers!

EDIT: Just to clarify- The update is a link to a file on OneDrive, where I have permitted shared access. This links to the file, which needs to be downloaded to play as it doesn’t play directly through OneDrive. The file is a compiled version of the game, using CSIDE, which doesn’t display the in-game pictures, though everything else works fine. AFAIK!

EDITEDIT: Just added a free bit of lore on Patreon, available to any member, about the orc ages of history. It cannot be vouched for accuracy. Also- a sneak peek of a new character, Coireal, one of the fish folk, though distinctly more like a Siren.

Having revisited the demo and found a few typos and a couple of things that I would like clarified. I’ll write a different post regarding the new content and my thoughts and feelings.

Not sure how best to present my findings, hopefully it’s clear what is a typo.

A dozen constables jump into the carriage, with two of the mirror-armoured agents. The agents hold guns, pointed in your general direction, while the constables move between your beaten crew holding small black sacks. One of the sniffers approaches, a stern glint in his eyes. WIthout uttering a word, he pulls a sack over your face.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

In the mes, you line up to fill your mess tin with the latest offering of stew. Taking your seat on a bench at the edge of a long table, it seems the Roachpedes are the subject of much of the discussion of the other rank-and-file troopers. Particularly Vin, who attracts a number of scowls.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

Inside the cramped space is a rather plush bed, shelves of books and a dark wooden desk where a plate of vegetables and meat steams. β€œWe have several agricultural and barnyard quarterdecks, though we rely on regular deliveries for the finest fare. Be thankful, the lower decks east spore and mould slop, or worm stew,” explains the half- elf. β€œNow, rest and be ready tomorrow morning. There’s a shower in the corner and you’ll find the water warm and invigorating.”

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

Lord Evagrey swallows, the uncertainty disappearing from his face. β€œYou do have spunk. An impressive amount of spunk. I don;t think we want to let you go. We simply must have you.”

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

The women, gaunt and slightly elven of features, holds a clipboard with a thick wad of paper attached.

First meeting Avalina.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”-

Sure enough, at a pub called The Whistle and Hiss, tucked into a corner of one of the mid-decks, a collection of dishevelled, grubby waifs, with the occasional brute in heavy armour, gather. Nearby vents and spigots rattle and screech above a busy evening’s chatter. Though ether orbs may spy on the bustle, only something very close could pick up individual conversations, which is why the meeting of Raochpedes goes unheard by those with spiteful intent. At least, this is the plan… Also, this is a good chance to put your newest all of wages to good use for the cause of drinking, feasting and general revelry.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but to me this doesn’t sound right (I could be wrong).

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”-

Rumours follow the Lord of Despair, Lord Ash-Commodore Evagrey. The Commodore himself is seen as tough, strong and stoic, though weak to the charms of exotic beauty and lustful magic. It is said that a dark elf bewitched him for a night over twenty years ago on the maiden expedition of the Despair’s Demise. The Commodore’s children, twins with a Dark Elf heritage, court intrigue with every their step and whisper.

This is easy for you. You simply fill envelopes with outrageous tales of the Evagreys. Stamping them with seals, you slot them into the missive boxes for others to deliver. Though the higher ranks of the crawler may never openly talk about such scandalous things, you know they’ll be thinking about them. It becomes increasingly common to hear whispers about the many outrageous deeds, real of imagined, of the Evagreys. Support for them is dissipating.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

Your part in the scheme is simple. Having smooth talked your way into the post rooms of the upper decks, where missives are hastily typed and sealed, you slip the folded copies of the single sheet paper into envelopes. Now, these will be delivered by all of the Dispatchers, who have all srown to never check the contents of messages. Hopefully, this means your fellow Dispatchers will escape suspicion while you spread the word to people of great influence.

Eventually, someone will find the press and smash it to pieces. Until them, every time you hear crew folk gossip about the various stories printed in the, among other names, β€˜Basilsk’s Eye,’ you really feel like you are making a mark.

Was there meant to be a choice for the player to title their papers so it would read something like printed in the (paper title), among other names, or is β€˜Basilisk’s Eye’ supposed to come after the? If the former is the case, I’m calling my paper β€œThe Crawler Express”.

Side note, while writing this section I noticed that Basilisk was missing a second i.
β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”-

You speak about King and Country, stirring the homesickness which resides in every Roachpede’s soul. β€œDown in the underdecks, I’ve met SIster Cath. She courts the Mother, in service to the crown. She’s made a real home there, down in the sweat and the filth, because she knows that our best chance of remaking our lives is to serve King Adri II.”

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”-

One night, you lead a bunch of Roachpedes onto a warehouse deck. All of you wear goggles and filter masks, though you make doubly sure than nothing records your activities. Summoning boggarts, you direct them to pass over the ether orbs orbs, rendering their feeds into ghostly blurs. No one will be able to identify your band!

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

β€œI have no problems with these helmets,” says Tinkworth. β€œThey glory the Basilisk and add to the efficiency of my engine mates. Lincon’s crew does outwork yours, Rumble.”

Was it meant to say glorify?

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

Grunting a laugh, Vin’s eyes flare. β€œThey know that messing with one of us means messing with all of us. And they’ve seen me beat gits blooding in sparring.” He takes back the flask and gulps a drop before leaning closer.

Did Vin mean to say bloody or does blooding have a different meaning?

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”-

You stir the rebel which resides in every Roachpede’s soul. β€œThere’s something in the air, mates. Can you feel it? Everywhere folsk sneer at the mention of the Evagreys and the King. What if we took on the same stance and tipped the scales? You think we’d be able to improve our lot?”

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”-

One of the most baffling typos I’ve seen so far is how GIMJYM is spelled. On Gimjym’s history it’s spelled i y but at the end of the first paragraph about the Royal Rump it’s spelled Gymjim, and again during the train ride to Zthhullu. Which is the correct spelling or is this how people outside the country spell it?

A new day is met with sunshine blazing through the window. Presently, the Lancer Director travels through Gymjim, the last of the Railway Republics. You can see the glistening rapids of the river Krog’s Tears snaking through the land. Now and again, you catch the sight of orcs riding boars and basic motor carriages. Soon, you’ll cross the river, into the arid scrub of the Rump Enterprise Zone. From there, the Green Emperor’s Claws mountains are but a day’s train ride away.

How far can you go with magic ?
The luck magic we got has shown to be far more than just controlling a coin toss or guessing a right card but what is the limit of our power ? Can we see things like fate and bad luck ? Or maybe our power can evolve into a form of divination ?

@MrSpec84

This is awesome work! Much appreciation.

Input like this is important to smooth out these HG games. Editing is very frustrating for me, much of this due to my rubbishness at it. You have found things my eyes would just skip over. :pancakes: Have some pancakes!

For things like this, if you want, I will give you an editor credit in the final version, though that is a ways off yet. These fixes will appear in the next DashingDon update.

As to your questions- Vin meant to say bloody- You can β€˜glory’ in something, but your suggestion, glorify, works better.

Haha- yes. Gimjym- I think most people there don’t know how to spell it. It is spelt counterintuitively, not Gym Jim but Gim Jym= Gimjym, and pronounced with a hard G. This is after a famed dwarf and orc adventuring pair, named in An Unexpectedly Green Journey, who you can actually meet. Though I hope their names are not confused in all of those 1.5 million words :cold_sweat:

And, thanks to you, I will add an option for naming the revolutionary newspaper.
Love β€˜The Crawler Express.’

On that note, I might also add an option for the MC to specify what exactly some of the anti-monarchist graffiti might say too.

@Manaxaggd

You are right- Zthullu does have an enhancing effect on magic. Though, truthfully, your MC’s magic has more to do with chaos than luck, it just looks like luck to the uninitiated.

Already empowered, your magic can develop further-

If you are possessed by the dark presence, you will find that you can summon things other than boggarts- and that your boggarts might become a bit more… murderous.

Otherwise, your β€˜luck’ magic may well let you see the run of the ether threads, into a potential future. The boggarts, becoming more attached to you, may also become something beyond mere annoyances.

If you receive the Mother’s Blessing, you will, at times, find yourself capable of magical feats (more to with protection and healing). However, these will only develop further if you have high intuition.

Really enjoy posts that get me thinking. From these idle ponderings, many ideas could spring from the ether, like boggarts!

Cheers to both of you,

Is this a…fantasy tank game?!

I get very strong Mortal Engines vibes.

Hi, both of you!

Yes, it’s not exactly a fantasy tank game but a fantasy land-dreadnought game, if dreadnoughts were the size of cities. You get vast, hulking city tanks, bristling with armaments, and faster man-sized vehicles.

Things like Mortal Engines, Mad Max and a touch of Dune, are influencesβ€”also, general fantasy Tolkien and Warhammer stuff.

The Star Wars Sandcrawlers, home to Jawas, are an influence, as is the Sand Steamer from the β€˜Brilliant Dynamite Neon’ episode of the Trigun anime.

Also, an old short story I penned, where there is a revolution in a mobile, steampunk-ish city is undoubtedly a big influence. Though the story was not written before Mortal Engines was a thing, I wrote it without any knowledge of those books, thinking more about the idea of a moving Hive City from WH40k.

Cheers!

Will there be any Tyranids to squash?

1 Like

It’s Chrome shelled regios kinda.
Not sure how popular the anime is but seem have similar premise of gigantic moving city with weapons and in hostile environment.

1 Like

@Lucha_Markre

Not Tyranids- they are lost in another universe protected by the magic weaving of trademarks and lawyers!

But, there will be nasties- though Zthullu is ultimately hostile to all mundane life, certain things might thrive there.

@G_Kagara

I had to look that one up! It sounds very similar, though it came after Mortal Engines. It also got me thinking, since in Chrome Shell Regios the main city is an academy of sorts (according to wiki- is that right?), that it is a bit like the garden city things in Final Fantasy VIII- although those could fly.

Seems like the idea of massive mobile cities appeals to many. I suppose this idea is not that far removed from massive spaceships or orbital habitats, just keeping them earthbound.

I forgot to ask this when the demon first came out but would their be a industrial goblin or something just because most fantasy worlds that are steampunk and have goblins usually have them as industrial in some way

And if you already thought of that and decided not to do it it would be funny if you make a achievement along the lines of
β€œHey that’s the wrong type of goblin for this universe” or β€œthe first of your kind probably the last”
if you get like 60+ ingenuity or something

1 Like

Hi Lucifur,

I love the sound of an industrial goblin but I am not sure what you mean- like factory workers as goblins? Here, most goblins are stuffed in the underdecks to do dirty cleaning jobs. Is there somewhere I can look for clarification?

Also, I love the idea of adding a joke achievement- in fact, I haven’t really gotten around to achievements yet but will keep this one in mind. I just need to make it clear in my brain what these inspiring industrial goblins are.

Cheers!

1 Like

What I mean by industrial goblins is pretty much civilized goblins that become more industrial focused instead of raid focused i guess would be the way to describe them

For example they would be like gnomes or dwarfs in terms of industrial skills probably a little or a lot worse but along those line but probably a lot less grounded in terms of their ideas (you could also go with them being chemists another way to go)

I can’t really think of a show or movie that actually portrays this I think I’ve only seen this actually done in written examples

I hope that makes more sense I can try to find the written examples that I am baseing this off of but it was canceled like early 2023 or late 2022 I think so it’s Ben a while
