I enjoyed the tidbit we have, it’s a good start. I’m already excited to meet Aurelia, even though I am sure it’s very, very far off.
It’s a little jarring to be dropped in at the end of the war. It’s generally not too difficult to piece together what’s going on, but maybe you could add a clear and organized summary of the war and who everyone is - it felt a bit scattered to me.
I see what you mean. I’m wary of adding too much exposition to the first chapter, but I can try to sprinkle in some details to explain how the MC got where they are and what the war was fought over.
Arrive in Redguard, meet the Duchess, explore your new city, and get introduced to the basics of being a ruler.
I’ve added “court skills” which will be static skills that help you in conversation. These typically won’t lock you out of anything but they may help you learn a thing or two that you wouldn’t have known otherwse. Which can help you make more informed decisions.
The kingdom building follows the current system. You have your main stats (military, economy, culture, etc) that represent the overall wealth of your territory. Then you have resource stats (materials, manpower, etc) that are the things you spend to improve your province. Although you don’t actually end up spending any in this introductory chapter here.
The next update will be slower because I’ll be releasing the next three or so chapters together.
I hope you enjoy. In the next chapter you’ll deal with some of Jason’s remaining supporters, these being the clerics of the gods he followed and tried to impose on Aelin. To do this, you’ll need to make an alliance with one of three holy orders.
I hit a bit of a dilemma, and foresee other dilemmas like it in the future. Normally I wouldn’t do a poll but since it’s not related to the main plot and is more about character customization, I figured it could be fun.
Basically, would you prefer to customize small things about the MC or have it be based on their class? The advantage to the latter being that I could add a little more depth than I would otherwise.
Example
My current dilemma is that I decided to give the MC a fantastical mount instead of a horse to reflect how experienced they are compared to others. Also it’s fun. I can either give each class a mount unique to them (a pegasus for knight, unicorn for cleric, arcane horse for wizard) and have slightly greater depth to how they acquired it. Or have the MC be able to pick whatever mount they please (with more minor restrictions) but have there be less depth to it.
More character customization, but a bit less depth to choices
Less character customization choices, but more depth to the classes
Chapter 3 has been added, I’ve adjusted the plot of it from what was earlier announced. In this chapter (and the next two) you’ll deal with bandits and establish a system of law in your city. I was originally going to release all three chapters together, but I’ve recently figured out how I’m going to handle certain aspects of this project. I want to announce them before I go quiet.
Romance
The main issue I was having in regards to romance was finding a way to incorporate it into the plot without breaking the flow. I think I finally figured out how (see below) so I’ll be attempting to include romance in the interludes. It’s possible it won’t work out (I’m not well-versed in romance) but I at least plan to try.
The only RO I’ve figured out so far is King Samuel (for women).
Interludes
In-between each “arc” (so every three chapters or so) there’ll be an interlude where you’ll have more chances to socialize. The interludes will end with the MC meeting up with their old party and investigating the Mandate together.
Focuses
After mulling things over I’ve determined that the best way to do the city building is for the player to choose a “focus” and “subfocus” for their city. The three main focuses are “military, economy, or culture” and the subocuses are “military, economy, religion, and arcane.”
There’ll be choices within these focuses but they’ll stay themed around the chosen focuses. For example, if you pick “military” and “religion” you may receive an option to train paladins or battle ready clerics.
You select your focus and subfocus in chapter 3.
That’s all for now. I hope you enjoy the update! And thanks to everyone who weighed in on the poll.
He was definitely an obvious choice to make an RO, given he’s single, has prior history with the MC, and fits the political aspect too. That said he’s also a deeply troubled character. So… best of luck!
I read your game today and I really liked it, if I may I don’t know what plans you have for the future, but as RO I would see someone capable of helping us achieve our goal with the city, for example a merchant who finances the enterprise with his money
I’m definitely looking for ROs to actually live in the city with the MC. For Samuel, the geographic distance works on a thematic level and he has prior history with the MC. I don’t see that working especially well for other characters. I don’t know about a merchant but I have an idea for RO like that (one who’ll help build the city) but I’ll have to see how that pans out first.
Really enjoyed the new update! The decisions and day to day court stuff are interesting, grounded, and feel real, with pros and cons to each choice.
The interludes for potential ROs is a great idea. I think an easy RO choice could be Duchess Fountaine and/or her brother and maybe some member of Yuvanne to cement some kind of alliance for Red guard. It can follows the plot where you can get closer to House Fountaine or House Yuvanne so it would not deviate from the story.
Thanks! I’m glad you’re enjoying the management part so far. And it’ll hopefully become more engaging as the court itself expands.
Making Annette an RO has definitely occurred to me, and I may end up doing that once I reach the interlude and get a chance to figure the romance subplots out. My only hesitation is that it I worry the romance would become the main focus of the diplomacy side of thing, rather than a part of it. Like you mentioned I’d probably need to add a House Yuvonne or Hilkrolm RO to balance it out.
So it depends on if I can plot out the romance in a way where it adds to the political divide without taking it over. But you’re right, she’s a good candidate. Thanks for the suggestion!
Brief update while I’m here: I’m almost finished with the first of the two chapters that will make up the next update. I don’t suspect the second chapter will take too long because it isn’t as unfamiliar territory for me, but you never know.
Chapters 4 and 5 have been added, 22k words in total. That said, there’s heavy variation depending on who you pick as Sheriff in chapter 3. So individual playthroughs will not encompass it all.
These chapters were difficult ones on account of it being new territory for me as a writer. I’m probably going to need to rebalance this later and add more options in certain places. If you have any suggestions in that regard I’d be happy to hear them.
Details below.
The Sheriff
There are four choices for the sheriff in total, each with their own approach to the job. One you get by default (Alrick) while the other three are unlocked depending on the MC’s class. Those are Jehan (Knight MC), Constance (Cleric MC), and Aisha (Wizard MC).
Choices
If you ever encounter a section where there’s only one choice on how to deal with a problem, it’s because you haven’t unlocked the other options. There usually isn’t more than two or maybe three as a result of all the other variation in the chapters. This may change later.
Next update
Up next is the first interlude. Wherein you’ll have a chance to socialize a bit and rejoin your old party in exploring what to do about the Mandate.
Annette Fontaine has been tentatively added as an RO for male MCs.
As I mentioned in the original post, I’ll be allowing this topic to lock and won’t unlock it for updates. I’ll update the title and link so people can play if they want.
I tested this update as best I can but the aforementioned variation makes it hard to catch everything. If you spot something, please let me know.
