[WIP] The Long Shot: The Prodigy (formerly The Beautiful Dream) CHAPTER 3 is here taking the WIP to 50k words so far

I played the WIP, liked the story flow. It must’ve taken real dedication to introduce all 92 English football clubs! And I imagine even more needs to come if you consider the European + Worldwide competitions. Or if you want to let the players represent their country too.

Good luck with the writing and game mechanics! Seems like it could be quite tricky to balance story + skills progression + successes vs setbacks system.

:joy: classic.

The coding is setup that in chapter 2 you will get randomised offers from Tier 1 (the ‘big six’), tier 2 (rest of the Premier League), and tier 3 (Championship) clubs. This randomisation will be overridden if your favourite club is in one of those tiers, so basically your favourite club will always be an option if in those tiers.

Sadly you can’t if your favourite club sits lower than this as it doesn’t fit the narrative of you being a prodigy if you then go and play for say Accrington Stanley (obligatory, who are they?). However this is hopefully satisfyingly approached in the chapter 2 text.

Thanks so much!

Thanks so much!

I’ll be honest, I’m always a nice guy in these games, I try and be an arse in them and I always fail completely. So it’s being a challenge to write options where the player is selfish and whatnot!

Thanks a lot!

Yes I’m feeling that balance. And the coding for Champions League teams and Europa teams are in there also! Also tiered into appropriate levels which will be randomised in the cup draws (same for the FA Cup draws) weighted towards the top clubs so most of the time they will get further into the cups but with enough chance for a giant killing run from a smaller team, for realism.

I added these in as I didn’t know if I was going to get into European competition, though atm I think I will save that for book 2, it muddies the waters too much for book 1 I think

Oh and representing their country is the main part of Book 3. You will work your way into the national setup in Book 2 and a large focus of book 3 will be the actual World Cup :slightly_smiling_face:

That’s good, and i can t wait to see how this turns out.

Phenomenal game so far, I can clearly see your passion for football and the small details about being a player really come through. I also enjoyed the depth of customization for our player like to be a leader, a star player, use humor, passion, being able to use mentor, etc

I’m excited to see what comes next especially with the unique romance and skill/luck check systems. Keep up the good work!

Thanks so much I’m so glad you liked! And yes hopefully all the systems will come together in a really satisfying way! Comments like this make me more excited to keep going

Great game. Kinda already reminds me of “GOAL” movie. I wanted to ask some questions

  1. Will we get to choose what boots we wear and what brand of boots?
  2. Will they be real boots or parody versions?
  3. If we do get real boots is it possible to get retro boots too like “Nike Total90 Laser”, Adidas Predator Mania (2002).
  4. Will get more customisations for character or is that all of the customisations?
  5. Could we choose how we dress our football kits ( like what if I wanted MC to play in the 90s/2000s baggy oversized shirts with 80s shorts and modern day high socks.
  6. Will MC be able to get personal sponsors and Agents
  7. What inspired this game?
  8. What is the goal you want the game to achieve?

Your game is great and it’s great that there’s more sports slice of life games.

Hey, thanks for the kind words

I’ll try to address everything here.

I had plans of something similar to this, a small flavour that you can visit the barbers and get hair cuts and colours in your downtime, which will be met with funny comments etc from teammates and Maya/Miles and such.

I think I can expand on this though, some great thoughts there! I don’t quite think all of that could be achieved (it would have many variables that would need to be checked every game), however I think we could have a general player style, maybe “professional”, “flashy” and “retro” which can be clearly decided and chosen but without being directly referenced each time.

Sponsors and Agents… absolutely. My plan is when you come to have a senior contract, your dad is acting agent, and you can stick with him for loyalty and to stay grounded, but you will get other agents wanting a slice of the pie of this talented young player, especially a hotshot celebrity style agent who promises you the world and sells the dream, which would lead to sponsors and having to do a lot of PR (basically he would ride you hard to extract all the money he can from you with no caring about the cost to you), the conflict here would be reduced time for training, team bonding, and any time with Maya / Miles outside the football bubble.

In terms of inspiration and goal. Firstly I’ve quickly grown to love these games (and my appreciation is 100x more and respect 100x to anyone who makes these since starting my own!). I’m a generally creative person and reading them was giving me thoughts and ideas and having ADHD I just had to jump in with both feet!

I decided on a football game, first because I like football (unfortunately a Sheffield Wednesday fan), secondly because I felt it was underused, I see mostly fantasy, supernatural, medieval, and I love them all! But this felt different to me and I thought there is a lot of story there to develop.

But mainly, I really try and share these games out into the real world, I tell everyone I can about them because they’re so damn good and I want everyone to experience the joys, sadness, highs, and lows that I’ve had playing these, the heart stopping moments, incredible romances. And overall I feel that this game is something that would appeal to people who wouldn’t normally go for the usual genre that these games often are, if I could use this to pull more people in from ‘outside’ that would be amazing, I genuinely feel sad for people who don’t get to experience these. I’ve always loved books but these just hit so much harder for me and deeper.

But it’s also vital that it appeals to you guys here also, which is why I’m absolutely adamant this will be so much deeper and stronger than someone would think or expect from a “football game”, that it’s so much more than that and satisfies what you guys want and hits the standard you all deserve!

Sorry, that was longer than expected but I love being asked things like this and again thanks so much for your awesome words!!

I have a question is M like THE RO? What I mean is will other LI’s get as much attention and thought as M is?

That’s how M was intended, and I will still go for the various entry points into a romance with them as I like the different flavours of the same RO.

I have now pivoted based on your earlier comments and have 3 more RO being introduced, that will all have their own unique paths and fully fleshed out (although M will still be the most fleshed out as you’ve known them longest and should still be designed I think to have the deepest connection to MC, but please let me know if you think otherwise )

  1. The female (or male) star. They are 18/19, and have already broken into the England team. You meet her in act 2, at a PR event you’re forced into. There she is, beautiful, (or he handsome) and a known star already. You really want to impress them etc, but when you get to know them you find they’re actually really shy and quiet (I find that endearing) and will bond over the fish out of water this is what you have to do sort of thing, and your shared experiences, getting to know their back story and hopefully almost as deeply as M.
  2. The young media starlet. Again 18/19, if you choose the more fame oriented lifestyle you will meet them at a big glitzy glamorous event full of celebrities and wanna be (if you choose Aiden as your mentor, or if you choose the hotshot agent). She will make a beeline for you as the rising star. She is confident and sharp, and plays any angle she can get. But perhaps treat with caution, does she like you for you? Or does she see you as a ticket to help her own stardom?
  3. The journalist/blogger. Again 18/19, she’s a rising sports blogger, getting quite a reputation. When you make it into the starting 11 and becoming known, she starts writing and posting scathing articles about you. You have no idea why. You eventually manage to get an exclusive interview with her, and if your charm is high enough and/or you’re media savvy enough, you can turn her into a a partner. A classic enemies to lovers type.

I think ATM I will have these semi-locked depending on your characters… character. Like would the shy professional England starlet be interested in a brash fame hungry kid? (Checked against professionalism). Would the media starlet maybe using you for her own fame be interested in you if you’re all business no pleasure? (Fame stat check). And would you be able to turn the blogger to your side if you weren’t charming or media savvy enough to play the game?

This is where I’m at! I know how and where they will slot in, but how to deal with the diverging paths I haven’t got on to yet :sob::sob::joy: but how do these sound to you? Any other thoughts?

Really appreciate your replies btw, sparks my brain off into things I hadn’t thought about

Amazing, man.

The first time I played, I was a Sunderland supporter. The first time

One question: will we be playing for the England national team in the World Cup?

Please excuse the duplicated text; it’s the fault of the translator I’m using to translate the text into English, lol.

Regarding these romance options Regarding those romance options, they sound great.

Haha that’s totally fine and thanks so much in glad you enjoy.

In terms of playing for England, that’s too soon for this book, but that’s the core of book 3! Though you can choose to have a secondary nationality and have to choose who to represent.

I love the idea of this game and really love the match mechanics i will probably have a lot of alignment pass and skill fail just 2 (completely optional) suggestions

First i hope that romance does not become a very integral part and it is possible to keep ROs as only friends

Second i normally play a nice guy type so maybe a scenario like a teammate makes a misktake and the fans are angry and when you try to defend him they get angry at you too something like that may put some tension on more nice guy runs and then there is conflicting advice from friends dad mentor coach etc
Basically you want to do the right thing but what the right thing is depends on how you view it

Hi! And thanks

One of my core principles here is that you always have a choice. I’m not forcing anything on anyone, including the romances. You can keep them platonic certainly with M but planning the same with the 3 new RO.

Good thinking with the nice guy route (I’m the same). I’m about to drop chapter 2 and a large update for the game ideas, and there are now 3 fundamental player archetypes, and for each there are complementary secondary characters and antagonistic characters, so every path will have their own conflicting characters, including at least one of the ROs as they will be built to appeal to some player types and not others and at least one is outright your enemy and will make life as hard as they can, using your player type against you.

I also have plans at some point (though likely book 2) where you have to choose whether to take the flak for a bad run of form or offload it to the manager which may or may not cause him to be sacked.

I have many things going round my head, thanks so much for comments and thoughts like this!

Will there be a rivalry with another player? A rivalry like that between Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi? Will there be a rivalry with another player? A rivalry like Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi? Just imagine having someone competing for every individual award, for every trophy. Of course, that’s up to you.

I havent got it fully formed yet, but in chapter 3 ive written 3 key players, one of which will be your rival. My intention is this tracks through, but i think its a great idea to rrally maximise this to that level, I will 100% think about this going forwards
