(WIP) Path of Martial Arts: The Beginning (Dark, Eastern Fantasy | 805k words)

Is it even possible to defeat Long Chen during the tribe battle? I’m still unable to beat him on Overlord mode as a middle-houtian. I’m gonna assume no since scaley-mode Ruo and Xiwen can’t kill him, but figured I’d double check. Don’t wanna lose a battle I could possibly win lol.

I wish Tang Ruo was gender selectable since I love rivals to lovers trope :sob:.

Not sure if this is a bug or not, but attempting to use the golden seed against Long Chen after he uses his explode ability leads to an immediate game over screen.

You have to not use Golden Seed before in the Long Chen fight before using that option not even to block

Didn’t work for me. Do I need to avoid even using it to counteract his poison?

Yep, can’t even use it for that. The regeneration talent takes care of it just as well anyway, as I recall.

Dang, surprised how much minority the female MC is lol. I love mine for being a feral and not designating herself into any specific image.

Ah so the ROs are so hard to choose… top 3 being people who can just flat out kill me (and maybe Ai can too still).

Ehh what kind of martial artist is your MC if you’re scared of Tigress. Poor girl comes to you for combat lessons, that’s how far out of your league she is.

I enjoy her occasional cute moments, like her cuddling up to you if you beat her and then embrace her in the tourney.

Elder Rin is definitely a scumbag, but damn do I enjoy her dummy mommy vibes.

To work you cannot use the seed once until this point.

And for you to get the Mei Mei pill (advancement) you have to accept killing the guy willingly.

A minor bug in event on date = 13:

#Smack him across the face for his disrespect.
					*gosub_scene sbr align "kind" "+" 3

Your palm leaves a giant palm print of red on his cheek. The boy caress it, tears dwelling up in his eyes -- tears that he desperately tries to contain.

He gets up and runs away, not bothering to even say his farewells.

Though maybe this is just me not understanding the intricacies of martial art culture, and slapping the kid for being rude is being kind. You know, like in that “she is so merciful, she could’ve killed him instead!” joke /s

edit: a different, and potentially more serious bug (unless it’s intentional). The cap on the inner energy, energy_total is only ever set/updated when MC is advancing a level on the power scale (mortal->early houtian->middle houtian) and doesn’t increase when the attributes which supposedly determine its size are increased with meditation/pills.

it is

You’re just teaching him a good lesson, so that he won’t provoke someone evil later on :joy:

Hmm it kinda screws up people who start with low stats MC and work their way up after they join the sect (because not only their transformation gains are lower, based on low attribute values, but then they also are stuck with low amount of inner energy from these initially low attributes. I don’t know if it makes for a better experience, not to see effects of one’s work, but oh well.

On a different note, there’s a minor scene flow issue with Mei Mei poisoning scene: if you don’t ask her for help and pick option to do nothing, the game describes the passage of time (“day one, day two” etc) then Mei Mei shows up. If you refuse her help the game repeats the whole “day one, day two” thing when logically it should just pick up from “day 3” moment of that scene.

edit: onwards with the playthrough, an issue with the restaurant visit scene:

"You don't recognize me, Junior Sister?"
		*gosub_scene sbr stat_check "chr" 120
		*if (stat_check)
"Of course, I do." -- she says -- "You are ${surname} ${name}, there are not many in the sect who haven't seen your face."

Your attempt to deceive her has failed: you are far too well-known for that.

			*set pretend_doorman false
			*page_break
			*goto doorman_choices
Hearing you call her by such intimate address, a confused glint flickers in her eyes as she looks you up and down.

		"Should I?" -- she asks.

"Tsk." -- you click your tongue -- "I must admit, I'm a bit offended."

"I apologize." -- the woman says -- "Please, refresh my memory."

		*gosub_scene sbr stat_check "chr" 140
		*if (stat_check)
// ...

Since passing the first charisma check forces the MC out of this branch, they will never be able to pass the second check (since they can only get there with charisma of less than 120, by failing the first test). That first check should be probably against MC’s prestige or some approximation of it since it appears to have been removed.

Another bit:

The disciples surround you and assault your prone body, kicking it without mercy. Kick after kick, they force you to curl up for protection.

					*gosub_scene sbr reduce_health 30
					*gosub_scene sbr stat_check "con" 120
					*if (stat_check)
You withstand their strikes -- they only serve to anger you instead.
// ...
					*else
Your ribs give out underneath the onslaught and you feel them shatter into pieces. You cough out blood, almost choking on your own crimson liquid.
// ...

Health reduction should be moved in the else branch, as it is MC takes that damage no matter if they pass constitution check or not.

edit2: moving on, the bandit camp mission:

												#Release his bindings.
													*gosub_scene sbr align "honor" "-" 2

No good deed goes unpunished. Or only dishonorable scum keeps their promises made with bandits, obv.

Hey would it be cool if we have enough chance to do reverse personalities and every character react to it after coma?

Like tigress enjoy your little training learn to be good empyrean rather savage but Wordless to your merciless after coma?

Or tang ruo always look down on you but hope you to be his Equal but after coma you beat him down bad to the point he afraid what you have become…a threat.

Or xiwen glad for your returning but soon have second thought about your sudden turn of action…like “you are not my little poetic partner…not anymore”

A small note regarding power level advancement: the way mechanics work currently, i.e. adding half of attribute value upon breaking into next stage, effectively renders whole “train and spend xp to improve your attributes” concept null and void as soon as you max out the attribute as early-houtian (something which is trivial in the current build even on the “mortal difficulty”). That’s because the cap for each stage increases by 100 points, and with 200 points in the attribute you receive +100 points at level up… meaning, a maxed out early-houtian immediately becomes maxed out middle-houtian, without need for any further work.

I’d suggest either reducing the calculated gain by 50 points so that --similar to mortal->early-houtian advancement-- the character without attribute-relevant trait can gain at best half of next stage to their attributes on the level up, or raising the cap for middle-houtian by 200 points instead of 100. The latter option would probably feel more in line with how the characters at higher power levels grow absurdly stronger compared to the ones at earlier stages, and also mean relatively more work/xp required to max this new stage out.

That’s kind of how xianxia works: the better/deeper your foundation, the stronger you are in the future. My intent was to relay that. And if you advance to MH as 200 in each stat, you’ll have plenty of IE.

Thanks for pointing out all the bugs - I’ll fix them up =)
