Who should survive?

Anyone read “Paradises Lost” by Ursula Le Guin. It’s a fantastic novella with a world ship. I’ve probably mentioned it before though, so if so, sorry. It touches upon religion, as well as a number of other problems with world ships.

I’m not a fan of the word ‘homosexuals’. If you must then homosexual as an adjective, not as a noun.

Sometimes appropriate in referring to behavior (although same-sex is the preferred adjective). When referring to people, as opposed to behavior, ‘homosexual’ is considered derogatory and the terms ‘gay’ and ‘lesbian’ are preferred. Homosexual places emphasis on sexuality and is to be avoided when describing a person. ‘Gay’ man or lesbian are the preferred nouns which stress cultural and social matters over sex. Gay people can, and do, still have children. I’d also think, that if your population is not 50:50 male female then women at least should be allowed same-sex relationships, as long as it doesn’t interfere with their reproductive duties.

There’s a lot of really interesting themes to be explored in regards to this plot, and discrimination.

I would do all I could do to survive. This can be done in a few steps.

*Milk all semen and genetic material from all unskilled people
*Kill 15% of those people to harvest organ and tissue.
*Sell all another 50% of those people as slaves.
*Have a mandatory rule of having sex 1 time a day for skilled laborers and 3 times a day for the unsold people.
*Have a small percentage of the unskilled to be used as slaves for construction.
*Use slave labor and money from selling slaves to construct ships
*Gather all cultural items for later generation
*Leave that planet!

Your plan wouldn’t work very well at all.I dont think the worlds population would stand for that even if it was for the “greater good”.

Ah, but you could do like the Nazis. Unite everybody under a common enemy. Paint all unskilled people as a detriment to society. Say that they would be the death of all “intelligent” people. Brainwash the young and “'re-educate” the military, so you can back up your military claims with military force.

I think that when we start looking at Nazi human rights abuses as examples of what to do, we’ve gone from “what sacrifices need to be made for humanity” to “how cartoonishly evil can we be?”

Last time I checked most of the world did not side with the nazi’s

If a group tried this they would start a war. And war is the last thing the world needs when a asteroid is threatening to destroy it.

You would be wasting the time you have to create a ship and planing for the asteroid. On creating propaganda and trying to take out the people who oppose you.

  1. I tend to prefer a nearly 50-50 split on this one, with a crew in the tens of thousands and access to robotic labor and advanced medical supplies I don’t really see us having to great a need for mass reproduction at the moment.

  2. Homosexuality is really a non issue for similar reasons as above and as such doesn’t factor into ones ability or inability to gain a place aboard my colony ship. So as long as they posses useful skills or

  3. While being a foreign national wouldn’t necessarily make you ineligible to be selected it goes without saying that a vast majority of the crew will mostly be drawn from the local population for ease of convenience. With people from other nations being drawn in whenever a suitable candidate or candidates can be found.

  4. Given the nature of the task at hand, taking anyone that doesn’t have a useful set of skills to contribute to the mission is unfortunately a waste of seats and resources which could be better used elsewhere. So as there wouldn’t be any other restrictions in place so long as they can contribute in some way or form.

  5. Yes a certain number of family members will be allowed on board as it decreases the chance a valued recruit will refuse to go if it means leaving behind their family or them committing suicide or giving into depression for saving themselves whilst leaving behind everyone they ever cared about to die.

  6. Of course children of varying ages will be brought along to help fill the generation gap

  7. No real age limit would be imposed, while age is certainly a factor I believe it would be foolish to pass an experienced veteran simply because they’re over a certain age. They will however be required to mentor and train a group of potential successors for when they do finally pass on or become incapable of continuing on with their work.

  8. As with many of my previous answers people with disabilities whom still posses unmatched skills in their professions well be brought aboard.

  9. No lottery would be possible, having made prior concessions in many of the other positions any and all extra space not being filled by a specialist or skilled worker would likely be used to accommodate the families of the other crew members.
