What are the common tropes/cliches you see in CoG games (and other games) that you like (and don't like)

I’m a sucker for childhood friends to lovers personally

Growing up with someone and realizing somewhere along the way that you now see them in a different light but not wanting to break the long friendship you already have

Plus you can have have cute crush moments when they’re kids :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

wanted to throw in some of my favs.

Fake Relationship
there is something so fucking good about the idea of being forced into a relationship for reasons and posing to be in said relationship in front of your friends and the good ol’ one falls in love quicker than the other and the slow realization that what theyre doing is natural to them now. the pet names feel natural. their presence feels natural. how the author choose to make bring conflict to the relationship that forces them to see the feelings they have are up to them honestly.

Rekindling an old flame
idk what you call it but exes whom suddenly appear back in your life and you realize that you still have feelings for them? chef’s kiss  how your ex still knows your habits and likes makes my fucking heart warm.

Opposites attract
i do love me some opposites attract type of pairings, if done good of course. lately ive been straying away from my usually flirty ROs and have been romancing the stoic mean types. its funny how despite my mc being an absolute sweetheart and just pure softness be paired up with someone whom fucking is mean to him and has expressions like a rock is somewhat kinda enjoying to do. not my usually type of RO since theyre a pain to romance with all the insults thrown at you but the reward is very good in the end.

Hurt/Comfort
i fucking love it when an RO would deliberately go out of their way to take care of you. bonus points if theyre the stoic mean type too. like seeing them so concerned and just take care of you in their own way makes me wanna cry.

Soulmates
fuck. i just wanna know that somewhere out there, someone is destined to love me for who i am, all strings attached. also seeing the different ways for you to find out who your soulmate is, is fucking fun. a few that i like is the one where whatever you write on your skin appears on your other half. or the timer counting down to either the time you meet them or the time they would leave you. also, a cute one is not seeing colors until you see your soulmate. seeing the word they thought about you the first time they met you/the first words they say to you/the last words they say to you branded on you.

Star-crossed lovers
fuck. i just want someone who would go to hell and back just to romance me. like throughout all those years that have passed, its still you that they wanna give their heart to.

Wingman
idk what you call it but youre basically your best friend’s wingman that goes to all this shit trying to either set them up with the person they like or just get them dates and one night stands while you helplessly fall deeper in love by the sidelines and hurt yourself more by continuing to hook them up with other people. cough major flirt best friend cough

Villain x Hero
sigh i love you fallen hero. if done right, i would gobble this without a question. just the absolute tension and banter between them is so good. how the villain is second guessing themselves as they fall deeper in love. just the build of the guilt when you continue to do bad shit.

Forbidden Love
this is very broad. but i like it the most when its used on royalty stories. how youre obviously not good enough for them, but they want you. then their parents get in the way and then the story introduces another royalty that the parents forces to make their child marry and how you cant do anything but watch by the sidelines and then a fucking misunderstanding happens when you thought theyre cheating on you but it was a trap and gods, its over used but i still eat it up.

Enemies to Lovers
of course. not gonna say much but if its well written then fuck yea.

The whole MC replacing someone who looks exactly like them and living their lives and falling for the person that was courting the original MC
confusing, i know. but i think this mostly stemmed from watching tons of barbie movies. i remember princess and the pauper and gods, me and my sister would always eat that up. its not my favorite movie but the movie i like deals with the same thing but in modern times and instead of a princess and a pauper, its a pop idol and a princess. idk why i like it but its fun to see the MCs be disgusted (exaggeration lmao) on the person courting them on their normal life and basically fall head over heels in love when they switch to the other MCs life and meet them.

Only for the MC
i love being special, sue me. the thought of someone reserving this attitude towards you is so heartwarming. like they are comfortable enough to let their guard down when theyre with you and just sometimes do a 180 and turn into a scowling stoic person to a loving clingy softie. the way they have a special nickname only they use on you and basically gives you special treatment.

Exchanging/Forgetting Clothing/Items and the RO ending up having it and you realizing it after
would be a good pair up with the enemies to lovers and hurt/comfort. when the RO fixes you up and some spark happens between the two of you and you fucking make a dash out of their, leaving a clothing/item behind. then when youre needing it, you suddenly find it on the hands of said RO. bonus points if your friends tease and misunderstood the situation, thinking you both fucked or sumthin lmao.

Good ol’ RO and MC getting into a weird situation and friends seeing, thinking that theyre dating
i think i just have an obsession with the whole being seen as in a relationship but in reality, youre not type of shit.

Sacrifice.
i hate it but gods i love it. when the MC sacrifices themselves for their RO and having that bittersweet moment of them talking to the RO, referencing something to them and just being at peace when they find out that the RO is unharmed. another take on this is when the RO knows the MC is a sacrifice/or will die at the start but ended up falling for them and trying their best to stop them from dying. jumping from not caring about the MC’s health to doing everything in their power to keep them alive, gods i love it.

MC in debt so they have to work for the RO
not really a fav of mine and i never really did finish any stories with this type of premise in them but i think i like it a bit cause its kinda funny, right up to the point where the MC and the RO negotiates on what theyre going to do to pay for their debt. i just think its very awkward imo.

Royal x Servant
i dont wanna be a fucking royalty. itll be way cooler to be the royal’s right hand. i wanna be a badass servant. king’s maker lit my obsession for this lmao.

Age Gap
hear me out. MC is in their early-mid twenties and RO is like early-mid thirties. im talking about dilfs. idk where this suddenly came up but quarantine made me fucking like ROs with like an obvious age gap. like i come back to mindblind not to romance K anymore Rosy became my fav RO on that wip lmao. curse you nanami kento! why wont you leave my mind?!

Power Couple but one is keeping it a secret
i love MCs that are very op but chooses to be laid back and hide their abilities. basically becoming a support character to their RO but when things turn into shit, they are not helpless and instead can actually do crazy shit.

TL;DR: i like bittersweet romances with good banter and dynamic, an age gap and fake relationship.

i kinda just got out of hand lmao. most of these are just found from the frequent things i usually write about so idk what theyre originally called or if they honestly even exist lmao.

More of a character trope:

I love cold, dominant, arrogant, ice princes in powerful (or aspiring) positions. Bonus points for blond hair and blue eyes. It started with Rufus Shinra way back in FFVII and I’ve felt drawn to that character type ever since.

Combine that with a general “forbidden love” trope and some sub-dom vibes, and I’ll throw my money at you. Relentlessly! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :moneybag:

  • Hero Dragon and Humanoid Princess
  • Smart Guy and Strong Woman (Other way around is fine too, brains and brawn together is hot)
  • Smart Guy and Smart Girl/BFFs to Lovers (Fitz and Simmons for the win)
  • Gentleman beats the Bad Boy with romance (this typically means I am a simp for most canon couples, though that said…)
  • Well written tragic villains turned heroes (less Kylo Ren and more Zuko)
  • Anything Time Travel or Multiverse related (basically half of films today)
  • Extreme size difference gentle romance (give me some adorable Lilliputian and Brobdingnagian romances!)
  • Short Guy Tall Girl (Basically the more realistic version of the above)

Ohhhh, nice! Been playing Immortals Fenyx Rising lately with my Wonder Woman inspired Fenyx model and I think Atalanta is one of the corrupted heroes you can have Fenyx fight (alongside Achilles, Hercules and Odysseus).

I second Smart Guy and Strong Woman, Short Guy and Tall Girl, Time Travel and Multiverse related andalso kind of Gentleman beats the Bad Boy and tragic villain turned heroes.

I also like in general(almost) any tropes that involves heroes turning the villains to good, whether it is through the Power of Friendship, being a Worthy Opponent, or just through the hero or heroine being so kind and good that even the villains can help liking the hero or heroine.

I also like the Feminine Boy-Masculine Girl couple trope, where the boy or man have traits traditionally considered to be feminine and the girl or woman have traits considered to be masculine. Like the man/boy being sweet and nurturing and maybe being the healer type and the girl/woman being tough, brawny and maybe kind of cold emotionally. There’s plenty of other ways to use this trope as well, basically any reversal of gender stereotypes or of qualities that are considered to be typical of one gender in particular could work.

I

That reminds that I also really enjoy the opposite of that trope,
this trope: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WeaknessTurnsHerOn , at least when it comes to physical abilities. I do like a good reversal of more traditional tropes and this is a good one, I think, which hasn’t been used that often and which I also think is quite cute and sweet

Yes to this! Probably why I like these couples so much…

(Yes I know Krillin is technically the strongest human in the world but he’s also a kindhearted and compassionate soul that got through 18’s tough exterior.)

I will never stop loving the tough/stoic gritty male character raising a small child trope.

IE. Pedro Pascal’s entire career?

This is fun. Off the top of my head:

Favorite tropes:

  1. One True Love/Soulmates: I could not care less if it’s ridiculous or people find it stupid, I’m a total simp for soulmate stories and the idea of soulmates. Not so much that “this is the only person you can be happy with” but more along the lines of “this is the one you can find complete and utter bliss with” because it’s the person(s) who fits with the character best out of everyone in the universe(s).

  2. Mindlink Mates: The only way to make a soulmate trope even better is to give them a telepathic link. This is especially useful for pain in the ass characters (and I am totally using this for a fanfic of mine).

  3. Like @Hayden_Winter, I’m a sucker for a character getting knocked out and hurt, then fussed over by the LI. However, I only like this if the character getting knocked out is a badass, not when said character is helpless and can’t take care of themselves (I hate that trope). Which brings me to…

  4. All Amazons Want Hercules / Battle Couple : Perhaps it’s just because I don’t like weak characters, but this one is one of my favorites. Strong women hooking up with strong or stronger men is typically awesome, in my book. Whether the equal/greater strength is physical, magical, emotional, mental, or all of the above, I don’t care. I think part of it is that authors, in general, don’t seem to know how to write someone (especially females) as being strong without turning them into complete and utter assholes and making everyone around them (almost always men, but also other women) weaker and stupider in comparison.

  5. I couldn’t find a trope name for this one, but I love the friends-with-benefits-turned-lovers trope, especially with #1 thrown in for good measure (throw in #4 and I may actually do a fangirl squeal).

  6. Amnesia: I especially love this trope in games, since then it can explain why my supposed badass MC can’t tie her shoes without falling on her face, doesn’t know how to use her chosen weapon, and knows virtually nothing.

  7. The hurt/comfort thing that @yb_minhee mentioned. I’m a huge sucker for that one. Also the “only for the MC” where normally reserved/grumpy/stoic/badass characters let their guard down around the MC (and likewise, really) and are clingy/softer/relaxed.

  8. Happy endings. I fucking hate tragic, sad, miserable, bittersweet endings. Life has enough of that bullshit. The journey can be a pain in the ass, but the end better make me feel good. Give me happy or GTFO. Of course, one of my favorite feel-good movies is The Expendables, so “kill all the bad guys as violently as possible” is perfectly happy to me.

  9. Villains turned heroes… and they don’t die.

  10. Time travel/multiverse stories, tied in with the world is going to end unless a group of heroes work together to save it (with a happy ending, obviously!).

  11. MC walks through hell and battles an army to rescue their LI… and vice versa. To make it better, have one go in to rescue the other and the two slaughter everyone on the way out.

Being forced to spend time together due to… circumstances. Like an elevator getting stuck. But nothing beats a prison cell. Combine that with “only one bed” and chef’s kiss

I like “only one bed” too. And bathing scenes. Especially if my character can be completely nonchalant about it. I guess the closest trope to that would be Not Distracted by the Sexy.

OOouuh! Got another one!

NPCs commenting on your relationship / sex life with the RO, speculating about it, or teasing the RO / MC. And I want everyone to know that, yes, I totally had sex with that person!

I LOVE how Winter walks around Sordwin, blurting out in the bluntest way possible at any given chance, how we totally had sex in a closet, because I WANT the entirety of Sordwin to know.

Yeah this was one of the many reasons I hope Guenivere comes back for the opposite direction because Jean said you could totally embarrass your child with how openly romantic you could be with their dad.

enemies to friends (to lovers?) and badass women are probably my favorite.

and there’s a rather specific one where one of the characters dies and the other has to, you know, deal with the fact. If they were supposed to be immortal and enemies even better (don’t ask me why, i just like angst)
