Typical development stages

Just wondering what the typical development process of a hosted game is for my own reference. Do players normally test scene after scene with the player community? Wouldn’t that reduce the number of future anticipated sales? Do you tend to have a small number of friends who play test elements of the game, do you write large portions at a time or stick to smaller segments? Interested for any opinions on this
