December Update Post

December is upon us! It is now truly winter (in the northern hemisphere), and National Novel Writing Month is over. I hope everyone who participated in NaNoWriMo had as much fun as I did. This year, I used the month of November to focus on two projects in parallel: my ongoing work-in-progress, Turncoat Chronicle, and a brand-new short story.

Speaking of Turncoat Chronicle, I am currently working on the final scenes in chapter 4. When I am satisfied with them, I’ll put up a call for beta testers right here on this thread.

Once the beta test has helped me locate any glaring errors, whether of code or of continuity, I will make the entire game public, for a limited time. This will help me get a wider range of feedback on the different paths within the game, especially on combinations of choices that I didn’t anticipate. I hope that patient players will enjoy this period of open beta before the game is ready to be submitted for publication.

I’m looking forward to it, and I hope you are, too.

Very eager to see how the game has advanced over the past months, will try to be there on the beta testing without a doubt!

That’s amazing! I’ve been following the project for over a year and I’m super happy knowing that the game might come out soon. If it’s not a secret around how much words will be the end product?

Currently, the game is about 170K words, or just under.

Since I’m working on some of the very last scenes in the game, and since we’re getting so close to the final beta testing (which will happen in two waves, in January), I have some new questions for you about the game’s epilogue.

What unfinished business do you absolutely want to conclude, aside from the game’s main plot? The sort of business that would make the game feel unfinished and the ending unsatisfying.

  • Dealing with Lux (if not marrying them).
  • Reconciling with Crow (if on Kidia’s route).
  • Securing the loyalty of the surviving Suthis family (like Belinon).
  • Finding a place for Consort Harim.
  • Other (please specify).

How would you take care of Lux, if you’re not on their route?

  • I would ignore Lux.
  • I’d rather kill them because they know too much.
  • I want to recruit Lux as an asset.
  • I always play on Lux’s route, anyway.

I can’t wait to see your responses, especially the ones I never would have thought of myself.

(I considered posting a poll about which epilogue activities you all wanted to see, but I assumed that everyone would choose either the coronation or the wedding. So that wouldn’t be a very helpful poll.)

For the first poll, I see you had the option of dealing with Lux but truly what would make it unfinished for me would be the opposite choice. Not dealing with Kidia would feel like truly unfinished business and seem quite out of character for my think one hundred steps ahead MC to just leave such a loose end.

There was never a possibility that you would leave that unfinished. If you don’t make an alliance, either you kill Kidia or they kill you. That’s the main plot of the game. I included Lux because their arc is optional and very much not the main plot of the game. A player who didn’t choose them could easily ignore them for 3/4s of the game.

“And after that,” says ${c_name}, “we have our whole future to look forward to.”

As of this minute, Turncoat Chronicle is 178,163 words long.

I will be posting a formal notice for beta testers tomorrow morning. Yes, there is still one scene missing at the very end, and another snippet I want to add, and some more editing. And yes, I still need to overhaul the achievements and put them in place. But I haven’t had a proper round of beta tests in a very, very long time. So this final round of testing is going to go in two iterations.

We’re very close to the end, friends.

Happy New Year!

As promised (though a day or two later than planned) I am now opening slots for the private beta of version 0.10 of Turncoat Chronicle. For comparison, the current demo version is 0.5.3, and it goes up to the end of chapter 2.

I’m dividing the current iteration of testing into two parts, each lasting about two weeks. For the first two weeks, you’d be testing a version that contains not only the final battle (which was in the last beta version, as well) but every variation of the coronation and the wedding, as well as several other epilogue events. I’ll be able to incorporate the first round of feedback and then keep testing, for another two weeks.

I’m looking for about 15-20 testers. Anyone who participated in testing before is free to apply, but remember that the purpose of testing is for me to get feedback on the game. If you feel like you won’t be able to give much feedback, all you have to do is wait about 4 weeks for the public beta. That version of the game will have all the achievements and (hopefully) none of the bugs.

Of course, I reserve the right to choose the beta testers that I think would be most helpful and turn everyone else down.

Edited to add: the closed beta has started and I’m no longer accepting further applications. Please be patient until the full build is made public.

Sent the form too, hopefully some of us can be aid of aid, beta testing is always great!

I always love games that take tropes and then put a unique spin to it!

February Update Post

Happy February!

You probably noticed that, despite my announcement, the final version of Turncoat Chronicle is not yet publically available. I am experiencing some delays, mostly due to health concerns, which is why the private beta testing is taking a little longer than the 4 weeks that I initially set myself. However, I assure you that I’m making excellent progress on edits and the game is very close to being finished.

I look forward to sharing the finished game with all of you.

It’s funny that marrying the heir is an option because as soon as I read the plot I was like “I have a very easy solution to this problem.”

Welcome to version 0.11.1 of Turncoat Chronicle!

That’s right! This is the last beta version before submitting for publication! It includes four complete chapters, including ending achievements. This version of the game has been privately tested by my dedicated beta-testers, but the time has come for it to see a wider audience. I’m extremely proud of this game, so I hope you enjoy playing it at least as much as I enjoyed writing it.

And, in a fun twist of fate, I was able to release this version on the Ides of March. Happy stabbing!

Play the beta!
