@valentine_v_daygirl : As @idonotlikeusernames pointed out, Marine Raider had the option to play as a Female Lieutenant owing to the intervention of Eleanor Roosevelt. This was ahistorical but interactive fiction is about choices and so I went with it. No regrets. There was also the option to play as no particular gender, which meant the player was always referred to as Lieutenant rather than Sir or Ma’am.
The backstory for this, never delved into in the actual text, involved the Night Witches of east front fame. @spytim will have both hands full on that story because those women had it rough in innumerable ways; making desperate nighttime attacks in obsolete planes against German formations who had plenty of firepower to throw into the air. That was the main reason those women learned to cut their engines and glide in on the approach, dropping their bombs and rattling off their machine guns before they restarted their engines and flew off, usually having surprised the hell out of the Germans- hence the name of Night Witches. Anyway, since the Soviets were fielding female pilots and even female tank crews, I figured Eleanor would push from some sort of American program to show that the U.S. could do the same.
There were women pilots in other armed forces. There was Hannah Reitsch of German fame. Test pilot, IIRC.
There were definitely female pilots who ferried aircraft across the Atlantic to Britain, and while those planes had only limited armaments, those pilots did on occasion bomb German submarines and protect allied shipping. After all, no submarine wants to stay on the surface when there is an enemy airplane around, even if they do suspect that it isn’t packing a full rack of explosives.
The Canadians and British also had women in their air-force, as Wrens and… I don’t recall the other designation. Though these were not front line deployments, there were women with pilots licenses and training involved.
Not certain about other nations. Italy didn’t have a women’s auxiliary air force to my recollection, though I could be wrong. Finland, maybe. Romania would be a long shot. Hungary and Bulgaria are likewise.
Marine Raider 2 remains in development, mainly because I’m finding less and less time to work on a project that I let get away from me. But in it, you can still play as a female Marine officer. You can also try to sink enemy vessels in harbor by paddling up to the hull in a canoe and stuffing a seam with explosives. That part has proven much more difficult to code than anything gender related.
