The People's House—You won the election. Can you handle the job?

Congratulations on the release! I didnt follow the development that actively, but I do remember when the first wip was published - and now here is the actual game! :o

not a criticism, a genuine question here, (because you run your business how you want to) but re: steam-
i exclusively buy and play my collection of choice/hosted games on steam, and this game looks fantastic and right up my alley (i used to have a special interest in american politics before things got so… bad. now i try and ignore it like i do my own countrys, but they make it hard . had to stop watching the west wing when trump got in because the juxtaposition of realities was literally painful and anxiety enducing).
basically, I’m totally going to buy this game.
i was halfway through doing it on the app, when i realised that though steam syncs to my cog account, it doesnt sync back. if the game ever does get put on steam (again, no criticism, your decision but also ) will I be able to like, email you guys and get a steam code? or could you refund me so i could buy it on steam to sync it? or would i have to buy it a second time?
money is tight right now and the thought of buying something twice makes my stomach twist, but also waiting for something to come out that might never do so is pointless, and if i am gonna buy it it is on sale right now (I have autism and OCD with one of the subtypes being financial so thats why I’m overthinking this so much) so my brain is kinda aaaaaaaa mush.

honestly i guess my questions are as above- can a game you own in your account be added to steam a different way? and is there a possibility of it being released on steam in the future or is it a hard no? i’d rather not buy the game now and wait for a potental steam version than have to buy it a second time to make sure my collection and achievements are complete (again, autism. sorry.)

I’m not an employee and I don’t speak for the company, but I can answer some of these questions.

At this point, there’s no way to add anything to your Steam account except by purchasing it on Steam. I can understand your frustration - I’ve been a CoG/HG customer since before any of their games were on Steam, so I own literally dozens of games that I’ll never have on Steam unless I pay for them twice. Your idea of asking for a code or a refund is clever, but impractical: if they were going to do that, they’d be opening themselves to requests from thousands of people - and they’d have no way of knowing for sure that we were actually applying the codes to our own accounts or using the refund money to buy the game again.

It’s uncommon for a game that wasn’t originally released on Steam to be re-released there later, but it’s definitely not unprecedented. I’ve certainly bought games in the app that weren’t available on Steam at the time, but were released there later. I’d say that, based on what I know of the quality of this game and the fanbase it had before release, it’s a better candidate than most to end up on Steam eventually, but that’s not a promise. It’s safer to assume that it won’t end up there and make your purchase decision accordingly.

thanks, i really appreciate your response. those are really good reasons i didnt think of that would make it difficult to use my suggestions. thank you for pointing them out to me!
i think i will buy it now while it is on sale then and if it ever comes out on steam i will hope i am in a better place financially and my ocd has improved so i can buy it twice and not be distressed. at least this way i support the authors and company i like more, i guess (looking for silver lining!)
thanks again!

Heads up media approval does almost nothing I have mine to 60 something percent and they never backed me up sort of a useless stat

It actually does quite a bit of work in the later chapters: it helps you buy time for the cyberattack in Chapter 4 to be properly resolved (you can get both public and Big Business approval), helps you during the impeachment arc (the media campaign stat checks are easy to clear), and it buys you the option to cheat in the Chapter 5 debate (if you seek a second term).

There are more checks and uses for it, but those are the three important ones.

I’ve just finished playing it.

This is a truly massive game in terms of the time needed to play it. Most of the COG & HG titles I download can be completed in a couple of hours, or a full afternoon at the longest.

This game took two days, and it was at times very wearying… yet I fully intend to play it again sometime.

There are a few typos, but nothing serious.

One thing that did surprise & annoy me, is that the graphic and large text on the chapter title pages are blurry. Playing it on a tablet didn’t help, and it’s quite possible that it would be unnoticable on a smaller screen. Still the tablet is what I mostly use for playing games, so I notice it every time. Any way you could sharpen up those chapter-title pages?

All in all, an EXCELLENT game! Thank you! :grinning_face_with_big_eyes:

Love the game!

Does anyone know what happens if you decide to sleep with the Prime Minister? I would feel terrible if I cheated on my wife and as tempted as I was to do it on my second play through, I still couldn’t do it :rofl:.

My spouse knew I slept with the PM, asked me if I cheated, and I chose to be honest. My spouse then asked if I wanted an open marriage. So no major consequences from being honest. However, I don’t think it’s ever brought up again unless I missed some text.

Only applies to the political spouse, I’m pretty sure

Yeah, Richter’s the only one to put two and two together and get yikes. And while they don’t call you on it, they really don’t like it if you lie to them.

I’m loving the game so far! My only critique so far would be that I wish a choice to choose what religion you follow, if any, was given at the beginning when building our character. It would have been fun to play as a non-Christian President(that isn’t to say the game forces us to be Christian, but the inclusion of our character using God in speeches and stuff implies a Christian ideology). Feel like it would add a lot of drama too with approval ratings.

Other than that, I’m loving the game. Living under the current political climate has had me craving a game like this, and I can’t thank the author enough for it!

How has everyone’s reelection bids gone? The author mentioned making it harder when it was submitted for publication, but I used to win a solid victory against Hoffman, and now it comes down to a couple of votes in Wisconsin again. I still managed to win, but trying to figure out if it was choices, my character’s radicalism, etc!

Understandable when you remember what we know about their father and his affairs!

I’m actually in the process of working on a guide for re-election!

Looking forward to it!

Also curious, how important is a not as bad midterm result? I tend to play a character with less campaign funding, so wondering if it is worth putting in money into the midterm or saving for reelection. Impeachment isn’t a problem for my character.

It’s a waste of money and resources, except for one very, very funny thing that happens if you get the best result. As for the other thing, you can avoid it easily enough, worst case scenario, it’ll go to the floor but fail to pass. To be clear, if you’re both really corrupt and don’t make your choices carefully, then it becomes more of a problem, but otherwise, yeah, you’re good

I think the author made a really great job with this game. I find it super interesting, as in I learned more about the process of US politics (and even learned a bit more about the geography of the USA, so many states can be confusing for someone not living in the USA), even encouraged me to look up some things to learn even more about the topic.

Anyway I have a question which I think might be also fitting for the politics thread, but since the game is about that too: So if I got it right a person can only be elected twice to be the US President. Once for 4 years then they can be re-elected once so at most they can be presidents for 8 years. (I even looked up past US persidents and I don’t think I saw anyone who was president for a longer time than 8 years.) So I wonder how it’d work for Donald Trump: He was already president for 4 years, before Joe Biden. And now he got elected again. How does this work after his current 4 years of presidency is over? Can he run for a re-election in 2028 or not because he had been president for 8 years even if it was interrupted by Biden?
Just to make it absolutely clear, it’s not about political views, it’s just a question about technical process, since I noticed Trump was the only one to get two numbers on the list of presidents (45th and 47th), so it means noone else got elected again or was interested in going for it again once they lost the position even if it lasted only 4 years for them.

He’s done, he constitutionally cannot run for reelection again

That sounds fair. So in the USA noone can do what our current prime minister does in my home country. He is prime minister since 2010 (got re-elected twice since 2010) and he was even prime minister before, around 2000. Guess noone counts it here how long one holds the position. Imo that’s definitely more than enough time for someone to get too used to power.

The key difference between the American system and a parliamentary system like it sounds like you have is parliamentary leaders can be relatively easily removed either by parliament or by their own party. In America, impeachment is extremely difficult and has never been successful in history. US president’s are in until they are voted out or the bar on a third term kicks in.

I think I got that during the development of the game, I should definitely try that again, see if it plays out the same! But it sounds like it isn’t worth putting in money into the midterms and either spend it on reelection or wait until the second book where I probably need it to make my spouse president.
