Starways Saga (WIP) ~588k words (Updated 6/4/2026)

Colony Ship: A Post-Earth Role Playing Game comes to mind but that ship’s centuries into its journey, dystopian society (almost post-apocalyptic) with decaying infrastructure, scarce resources, failed mutiny that led to warring factions later… the worst of the worst-case scenarios in the Colony Ship path I guess

By the way, recommend that game, it’s an underrated gem.

I had forgotten about that game. It is a pretty good game! According to steam I’m one of the 8% of players that peaced the fuck out of there and took the lander. Things on that ship were too chaotic.

In the Starways universe back in the early days of space colonization travel on a colony ship would span generations. Today the journey will only take three years, so it won’t get nearly as crazy as the Colony Ship game, but three years couped up with nothing to do and plenty of booze will definitely cause some chaos, especially when there’s many different ideas of what the new colony should look like and who should be in charge.

Oh yeah, one of them too :handshake:. Grabbed my buddies and told those recycled-corpse-nutri-bar-munching psychos sayonara. Fresh start, our own colony. FRESH AIR!

Nothing to do… an endless supply of booze… that’s already enough for shit to hit the fan! :joy:

Update Imminent
I’ve made great progress with the Deckie finale and I expect to be done with it by the end of next week! So you can expect the close to the Navy path very soon. It’s been a long time coming but soon I’ll be taking on a new path. The poll is still open and is currently very tight. Vote if you haven’t already and feel free to voice your opinion in here. See if you can bring some others to your side.
Cheers!

47k Word Deck Officer Finale
Here it is! I appreciate all the patience from my deckies! I hope you’ll find it worth the wait! Deck Officers make up the command structures of any fleet and there’s a great deal of politics involved between them. Chose how and if you want to play this game of politics. But change is on the horizon and you will find yourself in a place few envy. But what you do there will be up to you. As always the pirate king is lurking in the dark and lives are on the line. Earn a fun and powerful perk unique to this path. I’ve really enjoyed working on the Navy Path and I’ve grateful to you all for joining me on this journey. But I’m ready to move on and happy to close it out! Stay tuned!
Let me know if you encounter any bugs, typos or errors.
Cheers!

Poll Results!!!
The Ship Builder Path is the winner and will be next!
I was very pleased to see the poll grow so close after the ship builder path took an early lead. Not that I had a preference, it’s just nice to know both paths have people interested and excited. But I can only take on one at a time. So my Colony Ships fans will have to wait. I look forward to getting started on the Ship Builder path. I think it will be a really nice change of pace as we step away from the military and enter a world both centered around a corporate environment and an engineering based one. I’ll let you know when to expect the first update of the builder path. Feel free to ask any questions.
Cheers!

Minor continuity bug on the deckie path:

Summary

He was less proud when I sent him vids of my house, but I reminded him it wasn’t mine to keep. The Deck Officer should not have the house, that is the marine path, just the ensign quarters on the battleship.

Thank, I’ll fix that!

Just out of curiosity, do you plan for this to be a standalone book or do you hope to one day in the future write another that continues our career?

Hi, just wanted to mention that I found that the deck officer paths choice to listen or ignore the distress call during the party is reversed! Love the completed demos and cannot wait for the shipbuilder one and beyond

I came here to say the same thing!

Wow, the deck path is brutal. In the marine path it felt like we accomplished something but the apathy of the alliance shown in the deck path is evil.

Wow, not sure how I messed that up! It should be fixed now, thanks for letting me know! Glad you enjoy what I have so far!

If by career you mean the jobs from the four different paths (Navy, merchant, ship builder and colony ship), then no. This is intended to be an origin story for your characters path to become a star pilot. The four paths serve to get you the money and experience you will need to buy your own ship and become a star pilot. The four paths will converge at this point and the star pilot chapter will begin. In which you’ll meet new characters, hone your skills and go out on a variety of missions, and explore the galaxy, until the final mission in which you take down the pirate king.

There will be plenty of room for sequels in the future as the pirate king will not be the last danger to threaten the good people of the galaxy. So I’ll say I definitely intend for there to be sequels right now, but clearly I’m a long way off from that happening since I’m still far from finishing this first game.
And spoilers but, the Garin Lark storyline will not be resolved in this game.

Maybe try again, now that I fixed that mistake. It’s definitely possible for you to accomplish something if you have the desire.

I got an ending where the alliance navy in the far sector had started patrolling locally around their star bases, but what really made me think it was dystopian is that where punished for saving the ship by being given a boring assignment and I think our crews wages are docked again, so even though positive change is made, the navy punishes you for forcing their hand and discourages others from following your example. Comparing that to the marine path where you can wip the garrison into shape, earn the respect of the locals and then defeat the pirates on the ship, its just more of a downer although I still enjoyed it!

Spoilers dude!

You were punished for disobeying orders. The Navy will never allow for such insubordination to go unpunished even if the result was good. This path definitely details how ridiculous navy politics can be and how things like reputation, image and networking has mucked up the works. Doing the job and doing it well can take a back seat. Ultimately you’re faced with the choice, play the game and follow orders to your personal gain or do the right thing, which may be against your best interests. But I will say there is a way to do the right thing and get a ending that’s all positive. It has to do with a certain perk that has to do with a certain young lady. But I will also say that I understand players that have no interest in the politics game and I’d say that your character would probably not choose to become a deck officer in that case, because it’s well known in universe that they go hand in hand.

I almost never post in the forum, but I needed to say that the Navy path is just amazing and an experience I’ve always wanted to have in a CoG game since I first started playing! You’re a great writer and this particular path just nailed the military sci-fi vibe so well. If you ever decide to write a IF focused solely on that I’d buy it in the blink of an eye lol.

Thanks for your efforts writing the whole of this game and for providing exactly my favorite type of sci-fi!
