Shadow of the Eagles

Quite possibly - but you may have a hell of a time doing it.

Make the other Marshals watch him eat. That will put the fear of God into them.

I be honest I’m not patreon so my impressions of this game mainly from conversations here and the post on your blog

  1. I’m worried the lack of family for player even a spouse make the character feel don’t really have anchor for the story that showing how the story and the historical event affecting the mc. Example in infinity saga because we have family it make our character more alive and see how out family being affected by pur choices to support one of the faction make there affect from event that happening to us like lose our home or our home getting stronger. There incentive for us because our family affected by history, example as aristocrats there narrative that we are worried if we not support revolution our family in danger or as nornal classes we need to support the revolution because this is an opportunity for better live or our family is royalist as aristocrats but we staunch Republican (but not jacobin). This make our character not just exist but also have a live just like in infinity series.
  2. I read in both in here and your blog post in italy and Egypt as cavalry officer branch we can have deep relationships and know more about davout and dumas, but from what i take in infantry branch there no such deep relationships mentioned with any officers and napoleon for me should not counted because he our boss and another main character beside us so we always interact with him in any branch from my prediction. My suggestions in infantry branch you can insert suchet or marmont (i know marmont in artillery but yeah he one of the Marshall and interesting person in history and not many people write about him, everyone don’t flame me) to have deep relationships with our character. Maybe suchet as comrade who just like us trying to climb rank and become our friend or rival. I honestly also not that interested much on davout not because i hate him in fact he my favorite ( i know I’m based napoleon fan’s) but because there too many book about him so yeah i read too much about him and make me more interested on character that not many people write like suchet, dumas and other.
  3. This last is more of question. From my take in this thread both you and patreon member not mentioning marengo is that mean it will be dlc?

Excited for your game and stay healthy. This only my opinion and suggestions hope you don’t mind:folded_hands:

Yeah it’s unfortunate hard to find book about Suchet

The playtesters can correct me here, but I don’t think your concerns are too warranted.

Shadow of the Eagles isn’t necessarily what I’d call a character-driven game, but it does have a cast of characters (almost all of them historical) to ground the player character, give them reference points, and provide sounding boards as necessary. In addition, the player origins (of which there will be about 30 in the final game) each give the player character a socioeconomic position within society to start with, which informs a lot of their reactions and motivations.

The aforementioned characters already include a lot of well-known figures from the period, including as many of the Marshals as I can fit (including Marmont, although I’m writing in 1805 right now, so he’s not a Marshal yet), as well as a lot of lesser-known historical figures from the time period. I think there’s enough to make this game feel like a life through an inhabited world, not just a series of historical dioramas.

That being said, there are some timeskips and some condensing I’ve had to do, and the years of the Consulate are a prime example of that. The current interlude which covers the years of 1799 to 1804 is about 30k words, and doesn’t include either the Battles of Marengo or Hohenlinden - but if things go well, I’d like to go back and expand on that time period, including not only those two battles, but also stuff like the Plot of the Rue Saint-Nicaise, the abduction and execution of the Duc d’Enghien, and the drafting of the Civil Code.

Someone saying marmont name. I been summoned :man_dancing:

Joke aside, the point i really agree about your opinion is the fear about mc feel just exist rather than alive and yeah i now kinda low key wondering who we meet during infantry route. Aside from that today i discover this game have tv tropes page, showing people really excited for this game

Also suprised we can’t witness desaix death and one of important battle in napoleonic war. I hope everything going well in future and stay healthy cata

Act 4 is basically at least letting me namedrop Marshals I haven’t been able to introduce before.

Soult, Ney, Suchet, and Oudinot are all in this so far, and I’m still writing Ulm.

Can I shill for my boy Bessières? He really needs more love, frankly, often the only context he is mentioned is his conflict with Lannes and then his death.

Bessières has been in there since Act 1.

I understand that character creation involves choosing a name, and the player creates their own headcanon with everything else, but I recall someone mentioning that players can select a Polish background in the game. What backgrounds can a character have, and how do they influence the storyline? For instance, if a character is Jewish, will they have the opportunity to persuade Haim Farhi to surrender since he is directing the defense during the Siege of Acre? Could you be involved in liberating the Ghettos in Italy? If you can be Afro-French, would you have a unique relationship with Dumas that isn’t available to other characters? Do you have unique reactions or options for the legalization of slavery? Will other characters discriminate against them based on your background? Would being Polish, for example, allow you to join the Polish Legions in Italy, a possibility that might not be available otherwise?

There are thirty or so backgrounds planned ranging from former day labourer, to the child of a freed slave, to someone who is already a minor hero of the Revolution. All of them will have effects on the story - both for internal monologue and personal choices, as well as more consequential decisions.

So far, I’ve included about half of these for testing purposes, and I plan to add the others once I finish the main story.

Ultimately, the idea is that ten or so will be initially available for selection on your first run, and achievements unlocked during that run will successively unlock others for subsequent playthroughs. Likewise, achievements will be linked to unlocking traits, which are additional character elements which will similarly affect your character’s skills and rolls.

For example: if your previous character dies at Acre or Salamanca or Waterloo (or any other battle involving the British), you might unlock Ancestral Grudge: British, as a trait. If your next character has this (each character can have a maximum of three), then not only will they be able to roll twice and pick the higher result in any battle skill check against the British Army, but they’ll also have some unique options to prosecute that grudge - and lose some more conciliatory ones towards British officers or the system of British Constitutionalism.

Probably not. Haim Farhi was walking a very narrow tightrope, and he still had Djezzar Pasha breathing down his neck. He did eventually fall off and get himself murdered by his political enemies, and that was despite his political instincts.

Yes.

Yes, in multiple cases, although I haven’t implemented that background yet. I have implemented special content for a female MC which doesn’t just involve le sexisme, but certainly includes it.

This will also provide additional unique content, but not to the degree that I’d be writing a whole different path for it. I have to cover thirty of these, after all.

That’s awesome! It sounds like after a playthrough or two, we’ll be able to choose some minority-based backgrounds, like Jewish, Afropean, and maybe foreign non-citizen backgrounds. Is that right?

There’s a few backgrounds like that - no discrete Jewish one though.

Definitely will try afro French female, love doing hard playthrough starting line

Now you mention it, in most book I read people only say he is good guy, will be nice to see him more like what you said, and I’m curious now how Cata write him

Nah hardest start is being British lol

Okay joke aside, i bet from seeing the time period will have start as American revolutionary war veteran. I think this will be the one of the most OP stat way start that we can unlock postgame, if this really available post game i hope this will have many unique dialogue.

Also another bet is British start will available. There no way cata miss this chance
