Season of Shadows - A Regency Story (WIP) PUBLIC UPDATE 10 FEB [Chapter 3 UP, 270K words]

Ive been loving the update, especially getting a chance to interact with everyone. They all got a good bit of screentime and had such memorable moments. I felt so bad for my MC with the list, but at least everyone who matters says we deserve to be higher.

I did want to mention that I found a bug with the archery tournament. I was playing an athletic MC who manged to win the tournament, but right after it played the spectating version of the tournament.

Thank you!

Ah, I know that bug :frowning: I thought I fixed it, I was trying to before I published this. It’s definitely a spacing issue; really wish it was easier to see spacing differences in CSIDe, once you’re six tabs in and doing rolls it’s so difficult to tell what’s wrong. I’ll go back to the drawing board. Thanks for letting me know.

(The Dowager-Marchioness gives you a champion’s ribbon and people applaud - at least more enthusiastically than for Alexandra if you want to know what’s supposed to happen.)

Super fun. I loved the characterisation of pretty much everybody! Also, Kessler is pretty funny as a satirised/axaggerated Byronic hero type guy, but then turning out to be more socially anxious than brooding.

I’ve enjoyed introvert bonding with Von Kessler and meeting Captain Gray.

Can we, please, have an option to leave lady Blackwood with cold dignity, without MC berating himself and calling it “foolish” and “tantrum”? My MC doesn’t care about the list, it was a sensible and cold decision to leave. It’s already frustrating that MC has zero agency (for three chapters MC does nothing, he is only saved and humilated). It’s even more frustrating that I make a choice and MC(!) dissaproves of it. The same with Wallace: MC is afraid to refuse her and than, after refusing, regrets it without any input from me. Why MC keeping his dignity is foolish, but if Wallace does something scandalous for fun MC is suddenly fascinated?
And there is no reason for my MC to be so nice and friendly with Levi. Levi forces him into the mud and MC does nothing. It’s frustrating that MC is such a doormat.

“You follow the current, the press of bodies oddly companionable after weeks spent in enforced domestic solitude.” - my introverted MC disagrees.

“The smell - hay and horse-sweat and other even less fragrant aromas, well, it’s not you favourite” - my MC owns a horse, likes horses and horse-riding is his highest accomplishment.

“You’re just about to do just that when the clouds part their dark bellies with a flash so white and near it sketches the world in bones. For a second, every tree, every limp frond of bracken, is struck into negative…” - I’m not sure, but isn’t it too earlier for using “negative” in this sense, before the photography?

“If you’re here, Captain, I assume the Navy’s lost its taste for you as well.” - I thought MC was a marine lieutenant, then he couldn’t be in the Navy as well.

“Have you found it - peaceable?” Ferguson asks. - It was Grey a moment ago

I am writing about a society and a time where there were consequences - sometimes far reaching ones - for those who did not play along. This is in fact a very big part of the story - the scandal meter and ton approval meter are not there for decoration. I did give you the option to act out - but there are consequences to behaving against society’s rules, and your character knows this.

You are very welcome to play something more modern where you can act out more freely.

The Royal Marines have been under command of the Admiralty since 1755 and are still a part of the Royal Navy.

I’m okay with consequences, I’m not talking about the scandal meter and ton approval meter, I’m talking about MC’s attitude and double standards. MC knows consequences, MC does it anyway and MC berates himself and calls it a “foolish tantrum“ and player has no impact on this. But when Wallace or Linden or McCawley or Iris do something scandalous, MC never thinks that it’s foolish, there is no such choice, MC is fascinated instead. If “MC cares so much about society rules” is a set part of MC’s character, why it’s so inconsistent? Griffith can be rude to MC, but if MC snaps back, MC is forced to apology (chapter 2). Levi can be rude and manhandle MC, but MC responds by being nice. It seems that society rules and consequences are for MC only.

What makes this story special for me is that my Miss Eli actually has a stake in being attracted to women. It’s not like most stories where I could choose a man or a woman as my partner, it really doesn’t matter, because everyone treats her the same way anyway. So the fact that the story takes place in a society and era where we have to be so careful about showing our true feelings will only make it sweeter for my MC when she finally speaks up about this whole ingrained perception, and everyone can watch with their mouths open as the two most beautiful ladies of the season (myself and of course dear Miss Quinn) walk off into the sunset together, hand in hand. I smile in advance when I imagine the faces of many old trotters seeing this. They’re going to need those smelling salts.

I debated on replying to you because I don’t want to be immature. And then I did reply to you and refuted all your points and felt better for two seconds. But now I’m deleting that reply because it IS immature.

Respectfully, I do not think this is for you. And that’s fine, I’m not aiming for universal popularity and you don’t have to like this. Thank you for your error reports.

I’m not sure if this is a spoiler or not, but I wanted to know whether the American is going to be a new romance option or if he’s more of a one of/ semi reoccurring character? He seemed so sweet and I do hope we get to see that dance with him.

btw this was such a fun chapter. I spent time with literally everybody and I’ve never struggled this much choosing who to romance in an IF, all your characters are so complex and loveable.

Thank you! I can’t really tell you what’s up with Nate but feel free to dance with him! He’s not an official RO but who knows? :eyes:

I have too much free time and I like the story too much, so I decided to write a little character review/ranking:
2 special mentions from non-Ro-s:
-Redgrave: I hate him so much! Those constant, condescending, sexist remarks he makes towards my MC and Ginevra.:face_with_symbols_on_mouth:I was so afraid for Eleonor as if she were my sister! If even a strand of her hair will to curve…
-Hester: She is my secret favorite character from the whole story, I love my little, dreamy, romantic sister. I hope she finds love at the end of the story (if possible, with von Kessler, I think they would be cute together)

Ro-s:
-men (friendship ranking)
4. Levi North: He annoys me, and I try to avoid interacting with him at every opportunity. I have 1000+1 problems, I have no patience for his stupidity

3.von Kessler: I will do everything I can (if possible) to get him and Hester together. Possible brother-in-law?
2.William: Well, I like him. It was such a pleasant experience that after all the prejudiced, persistent idiots, he and his whole group of friends treat MC so acceptingly. I also like his simultaneously teasing, yet protective relationship towards Esther. A good brother, an enlightened thinker, a good friend.

1. Linden: He’s by far my favorite of the men, and he’s the only one I take every opportunity to spend time with. He’s funny, charming, loud, but in a good way.

-women(romance):
5.Although the last one, I really like her, but only as a friend. She is smart, independent, confident, and my MC’s goal in London is to establish a business relationship with her (in addition to friendship).

4.Ginevra: A childhood friend who begins to realize her attraction to the MC along with/in parallel to her. Unfortunately, I see her more as a sister than a lover.

  1. Alexandra: Poor thing, she’s probably the only one who gets more disdainful looks and mean comments than even the MC. It’s impressive how she endures humiliation with elegance and head held high and doesn’t break. Plus, she’s a good few years older than the MC, which, I’m not going to lie, really gets my imagination going. Out of all the women, she’s probably the most experienced…in certain situations…:face_savoring_food:

2.Esther: Sweet, cute, a real little caged bird who wants to break out of her cage, but can’t/doesn’t dare. In some ways, my MC is also trapped (either financially or emotionally), so girl, let’s break out of captivity together!

1.Miss Quinn Wallace: Beautiful, sharp-tongued, confident, extremely feminine, but at the same time she easily humiliates men in physical sports (rowing). Plus, she’s a country girl like my MC, which is why we both get mean comments from snobbish Londoners, which she brushes off with such graceful elegance, and then turns back, that it’s a joy to watch. Honestly: there’s not one thing about her that I wouldn’t love. She’s going to be my wife:heart_eyes: (or I’m going to be hers… I don’t know how that’s going to work in this era)

Well, that got pretty long:sweat_smile:.

I’m glad you like it! Hester is one of my favs too. She’s very fun to write.

I can’t promise that there will be F x F or M x M weddings, but there will be love. Xx

What an enjoyable read! ch3 it’s probably my favourite chapter so far. I really liked its vibe. Not sure how to describe it .. sunny? .. bright? but with hints of intrigue and plots still on march! And it all made a good contrast with the dark atmosphere of the ch2 ending in Redgrave’s house.

Some things I noticed in my latest read. Beetle bankruptcy mc

  • Could you not have bet a smaller sum on these - " Aunt Beatrice’s lip curls, “beetles, Horace? I mean, 20,000 pounds?”

  • Nate Perry bows - actually bows, deep and broad, as if parodying a stage butler - and then, with a twinkle, whirls away from the tent

Some characters change names in the stats page or in different sections.

Our father: Arthur (in the stats page) / Horace
Our aunt : Viscountess Beatrice Lake (in the stats page) / Lachelle
The American: Nathan Perry/Everly

  • “She cannot,” Aunt Beatrice says immediately, sharply. “There is no unmarried heiress in the surrounds with wealth that suffices.”
  • You’ll earn money in an honest way, without duping some poor woman into giving you her dowry.

Some lines I got with fem mc that stated she needs to marry a rich woman (the wording of poor woman also confused me into thinking that mc was gonna find someone with less money than their family to marry lol)

  • If the gossip had already started, you’d be certain someone - perhaps Griffith - would have warned you.

Should be Ginevra

  • …Sometimes the open way She cares about you makes you uncomfortable.
  • Her fingers are cold. “Look after Her for me. Will you?”

Shouldn’t be capitalized

  • A Lord Horatio Something (you cannot remember his surname) - who wears lavender and refers to his hair as “the crown of my soul” - is seated beside her."Do you know, Miss Wallace, I was quite certain the Morning Slander meant me when they wrote ‘a vision in moonlight, worth twenty thousand sighs.’ But no - you were the vision. I find that terribly unfair."Miss Wallace smiles sweetly. “Well, you must write a letter of complaint. I’m sure the editor will reconsider once they see your… soul crown.” Basil beams, missing the sarcasm entirely. “I knew you understood me.”

This part is just funny to me. I hope we get to see lord (Basil? Horatio?) again.

  1. Mr. Graham Farrell “Smiles constantly. Cannot be trusted.”

1.Sir Adair Reinhardt “Foreign. Complicated. Speaks as if narrating his own life.”

Should be 11. but congratulations to sir Reinhardt for being 1 at least for a bit lol

  • He stillls at once, fingers tightening before he lets go entirely, rising too quickly and stepping back as though distance alone might undo the impropriety.

stills

Suggestions?

  • Certainly," you say confidently. You are well-versed in Latin, having studied it extensively

Maybe this option could be unlocked for mc’s with the languages talent?

“Yes,” you say. “He challenged me. And we shot at each other. At dawn.”
A pause.
“Did anyone get hit?” Miss Albury asks, blinking.
“Only a tree.”

In my case mc accepted the duel but once meeting Levi they didn’t follow with it so there were no shots. I don’t mind the gossip inventing stories but in this case mc was telling how things went

Ramblings about von Kessler

Ansjuzkwkwis I love himmmm :smiling_face_with_three_hearts::smiling_face_with_three_hearts::smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

For a guy who would rather not interact with people he’s surprisingly so willing to help. Like with the carriage or reluctantly offering to escort mc if they say they are lost or the boot lace tying scene. (boot lace tying scene my beloved, i still don’t know which version of that scene i like the most).

He’s just so adorable to me <3 The ominous warnings just add to his charm. And the ravens that keep following are a huge plus too.

Looking forward to seeing more of him!

Thank you! I was very out of practice with writing and English and had no experience coding when I started this but I’m starting to feel like I’m getting it! (If not for the plethora of silly mistakes  )

I keep forgetting to change names and surnames (or even what the surnames are.) Nathan was Perry and then I changed it to Everly, Lachelle was Lake but @judy requested me to change it for historical accuracy; I do not remember a time when MC’s father was called Arthur … I really should work on keeping it more consistent or at least to hunt down the changes more effectively.

I am going to edit everything this weekend one more time and then I’ll move onto Chapter 4 in earnest; this’ll help a lot, thanks!

Today's replay thoughts

Lady Blackwood in league with Redgrave? She could just be an unpleasant person, but in that case I think he still may have insinuated that we suck to her or something.

I think our aunt and uncle are also up to something. You remark that you thought your uncle rather more liberal leaning. I enjoy the thought that he’s undercover in the conservative group.

When you run into Redgrave looking for G, he has his coat off. It feels…weird. It’s his house but for him to be in shirt sleeves while he has guests? Makes my stomach turn. Don’t know if that means a thing but it makes the hairs on my historical romance reading neck stand up.

Edit: Hit save too soon.

I GUESS our aunt could have been a bit drunk at the dinner party but I think she acted somewhat foolish with the host on purpose to obstruct him. Thanks auntie!

This is just stuff occurring to me so I may find evidence to dispute it, but I’m kind of feeling like Redgrave may have had something to do with Von Kessler’s brother’s death. He at least thinks he’ll find something of his brother’s there.

I think this may be an error: “For that matter, what does Lord Linden know? Why did he stop you from upsetting the Marquess?” I didn’t interact with Lance after saying hello. I’m going to have to go back and try to punch dickhead and see if that’s what this is referring to. :joy:

What’s in Reading? That’s rhetorical; I’m just thinking about it.

Alright, back to work. Maybe more rambles later.

Wait wait, I’m putting some things together having read the different looking for Esther situations. I think he’s working with the French.

Ah, thanks for catching the Lancelot error! I’ll fix it this weekend in my final (for the moment) edit.

You might be on the right track with one of your theories! But I won’t say which one.

As for Reading, I lived close to there when I stayed in England. In a picture pretty town called Henley-on-Thames. So it might just be that I know the area - or it could be something more.
