Saturnine [Released]

Happy second anniversary of this thread. To commemorate this day, I completed and sent one final update, containing many typo fixes and a handful of additional options. I don’t know when the update will actually appear, but when it finally does, Saturnine will be as complete as it realistically can.

Thanks to everyone who supported me throughout these two years. If you want to see more of my stuff, or talk about anything related to my stories, you can join my newly-created discord server. It’s a quiet place as of now, and I’d like to make it just a little louder.

Unless I’ve been phenomenally lucky so far, choosing to go for cash will always pay off, as long as you manage to avoid getting captured. The alarm only becomes a factor if you try to go for information.

Sorry if this isn’t the right place to share it, but I noticed a bug in the leadup to the third mission (it was Saturn for me), where Manfred approaches me and suggests that I become the leader of the group. No matter what I reply to him with, it removes my “love interest” flag (it was Renfri in my case). The Love Interests section of the Relationships tab simply disappears, and I noticed that the narrative also stopped recognising the relationship.

I tried using COG Save Manager to see what changes after that dialogue option, and the only difference I could note was that the “current RO” entry changed from “renfri” to blank. Manually putting in “renfri” there again made the Relationships tab start listing her under Love Interests again, but the actual story still continued to not recognise the relationship.

It’s hard to tell if that Manfred scene messes with any other romance-related variable. I couldn’t find any, at least. Has anyone else encountered this bug?

The current_ro variable changes nothing about the story once you’re locked-in. It hides the “flirt tracker” in the menu, but that’s because there’s nothing more to track once your character has a stable relationship.

As for your romance not being acknowledged, that’s probably because the Saturn chapter is pretty short and low on relationship stuff. This is normally fine, since Interlude Two usually has a love confession scene, but starting the Renfri romance early gives you the Manfred convo instead. I doubt there’s an actual bug, just some unfortunate routing through the game.

I did play a little further to check, and there was a conversation with Wisp about the Veteran’s mental health, where Wisp mentions something along the lines of the Veteran not having many people on their side or something. And I noticed that I could mention that I’ve got my bonds with Lisa, Damon, and Hadaly, but Renfri was notably missing which also made me suspect that something might be broken behind the scenes.

Do you remember if the love interest is supposed to be mentioned during that scene? It kind of felt like a good “litmus test” moment to see if the bug is real or not, but I may be totally wrong. Either way, thanks for the reply. I’ve been really loving this book, and it’s had some genuinely laugh-out-loud moments!

That conversation is less about the Veteran not having anyone on their side and more about the team’s expectations for them. Renfri and Kirill cannot be mentioned as a counter-example because they literally showed up at your doorstep and started yapping about all the wyvern-slaying you should do for them. Lisa did not, so she can be brought up irrespectively of your relationship with her.

I’m sorry, but there is no bug. Just confirmation bias. Glad you’re enjoying the game, though.

Fair enough

Anyone knows what are the triggers for the dialogues in this section? (Sorry, it won’t let me directly post the image)

Happens after you’re done with all 3 missions, before reaching Janus.

The first one is high violence, the third one is high emotion and low confidence. The second one is low confidence, and I think the last one only becomes available if you have low emotion. The fourth one is always available.

Got it, thank you!

One of my favourite things about the story is how naturally this awful, awful solar system took me from dedicated pacifist to like 70% violent by the end. It felt really appropriate, an old Veteran full of regrets, trying to be better, not wanting to kill anymore… and around the time the Crystal plot is resolved, it becomes far too obvious that there’s no solution other than violence, and the gloves come off again.

The transition from pacifist back into the Veteran from the War in Heaven was very satisfying, and going up an elevator with two people who have known you as a pacifist the entire time they’ve known you and saying “Easy, we kill them all,” just kind of kicked ass.

Than you’re in luck. The author is already working on the next game. Find more about it here on the WIP page of Walls of Natrun
