Orion's Own [WIP] [Minor Update 6/13/25]

This seems super promising. Very few grammatical errors, interesting characters, great customization for both MC and the merc company, excellent scene descriptions, just all around great. Can’t wait to see more!

@Random_Person There won’t be any recruiting prior to the first mission, but you’ll have opportunities in the next company management segment. I’m gonna put a pin in your Orion’s Own question since that’s sort of a main story question.

@BubbaJubbs Thank you! I’m working hard to make this the best it can be

Alrighty! So I reckon I am now officially about halfway through the gala job. The PC plainclothes path is all wrapped up and edited now (but still needs a lot of testing).

Orion’s Own is now sitting pretty at 52.4k words! And that’s only about 1/4 of the way through Chapter 1 haha

I’m very happy with how this is all going and I’m excited to finish out the rest of the gala job so I can publish this update. I can’t wait to hear all the different choices you guys make!

Fun so far, I like the stat screen setup and company customisation.
Will there be romance?

Thank you!

I don’t currently have any romances planned, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be written. I’m just mainly focused on getting the mechanics and story line down first!

Looking forward to this game and what you have planned. This is interesting

As for MC’s Mercenary Company Licensing, it depends on player’s choice.

I think that if the MC wants to take a Hero Path, then Licensing might be a good factor. If the MC wants to take the Villain Path, then ignore the Licensing.

Regarding license it does not have to be so. Surely there will be a possibility to get a license at a later point in the game? Not to mention that license does not guarantee heroic activity, you can be plenty evil and still legitimate. Also why hero or villain polarity, when a PMC is probably going to operate the best as gray in-between hm?

You are correct, you will have the opportunity to purchase a license later and you don’t necessarily need to be a hero or villain in either case.

There will be a reputation system that tracks how the public perceives you and that, along with your license status, will alter what kinds of jobs you are offered and therefore what kind of pay you can expect.

Generally, licensed jobs will pay better (especially if you are seen as a reliable and trustworthy company) while unlicensed jobs will pay a bit worse (unless you are open to doing very underhanded things).

There will be some more systems that interact with the licensing but I’m still ironing out exactly how I want those to work

I’m looking forward to seeing what you got cooking for us :grinning: I absolutely love the level of customization youve allready given.

But doesn’t being licensed mean that the MC is being monitored for their actions? To prove that the MC can be trusted?

Yes, there is a different level of expectation on your company if it is licensed. I haven’t worked out exactly how I want that system working yet, but if you choose to do disreputable things as a licensed company, you will have to be careful about how you go about it or there will be negative repercussions. Maybe fines, maybe losing a license, maybe just a significant reputation loss. Like I said, I haven’t landed on the perfect system yet, but it will be there!

Or maybe potential scandal and lawsuits in future chapters?

Does the Orion’s Own likes onions?

Well as mercenaries in a poorly managed company, most of Orion’s Own live off ration packs, nutrient paste, and other dense, shelf stable synthetic foods. They’re bland at best, unless you count the equivalent of space Tabasco as 'flavor’.

Onions, on the other hand, are fresh produce. Real vegetables are a luxury that you’d only find in high end restaurants, and the average Orion’s Own mercenary wouldn’t be able to afford to eat there often (if at all), even when they do get downtime.

So yes! I imagine they do like onions!

Onion news!

Got to thinking about the food situation and if the company is that bad its just another reason to leave before mutinying lol

I forgot if this has been asked before, but why is this story called Orion’s Own even though the MC leaves the Orion’s Own merc company to start their own, who’ll they become relevant later?

The orions mercenary group the MC leaves still has a part to play in the story what exactly that all entails we players can only speculate to.
