Orion's Own [WIP] [Minor Update 6/13/25]

I have to ask do we use laser guns or normal guns

Eh i think its suppost to like the author said sets a tone and the like infact why it apeals story wise to me that we cant save them. So many storys do that now days so the fact we cant in this opening stage hits harder. An adds to the desire to want to kill those officers at the very least gives that extra push to actually leave.

@WallyWorld speaking of our former merc group do you currently plan on us hearing about or interacting with them in the future?

Sorry it’s coming off that way to you. The scene’s meant to create a shared point of frustration between the MC and the rest of Orion’s Own. In the prologue, you’re not really in a position to change how things go—part of the point is that things do go wrong.

It’s about laying the groundwork and starting to shape your version of the MC. There aren’t any real “tests” yet, but your reactions are being tracked—and later, when you’re more in control, those early choices start paying off. And yeah, there will be consequences - both negative and positive - for your decisions once you’re the one making the calls.

That could definitely be true for your MC! That background is left vague so you can insert whatever headcanon you’d like there

Y’all are using the kind of guns we’re more familiar with in the real world - solid projectiles.

In the future though you’ll be able to pick what kind of weaponry everyone is using

It’s in the title right?

They might be a thorn in your side for longer than you think…

gotta say, i love the game. the pacing feels good, the characters have a compelling personality so far, and the plot is interesting. hope to see more updates soon!

I get that. Feelings of hopelessness aren’t my jam is all. Not a dealbreaker or anything.

I do wish we could see more of these people though. Thing about character deaths is that you’re now relegated to flashbacks with a predetermined outcome.

Thanks! I have pretty long hours during the week, but I’m writing the next part of Chapter 1 whenever I have a spare minute! You’ll definitely be seeing another update by the end of April

I definitely understand that. Luckily this story isn’t about grinding in the hopelessness - it’s actually about coming out of that; what you choose to do and how you act when you can’t control all the variables, and who you are when you can.

You’ll be spending a lot of time with Garron and Vellis and getting to know them as well. As the story progresses you’ll be able to help them grow and heal from their own pasts

It was mentioned that licensed missions give you “planetary stabilization missions”. Does that mean resolving wars and such?

It’s also mentioned that the Blue you can pick is worn by loyalists and zealots. Hope we learn what that means.

Yes! You will have a variety of jobs offered to you at different points along your story, and they will change dynamically to the size and reputation of your company.

The “worn by loyalists and lunatics alike” line is meant more as an imagery thing - bright and bold, hinting at a wider world, and still somewhat open to your interpretation as far as hue/gradient

Will we be able to buy a license later in the story if we didn’t during the first opportunity?

Absolutely! You’ll have an opportunity in every management scene until you buy it - and you never have to buy it if you don’t want to

We’re going strong on Chapter 1! Just finished out the choice tree for the Gala Job where the player is the plainclothes operative and it’s sitting around 480 words. That’s 480 words of code for one of three paths without any narrative, not even including the Blacksite Job.

By the time I finish Chapter 1 we should be looking at another ~16k words to the story! I’m going to write the narrative for this branch, then start working on the skeleton for Vellis and Garron being the plainclothes next.

I know on paper this doesn’t really sound like that much, but in terms of scaling this means we’ll be having quite a bit of meat on the bones of this story by the time it’s done.

I find it interesting that, for your outfit to actually be the most professional it can be at the start, you have to start as a black ops unit, while to start legit, you have to go to important jobs dressed up like a warlord militia.

Yeah, you have to make that tradeoff - you’ve only got so much money. So it’s protection or legitimacy

Could we still take on unsavory jobs even if we buy it?

Yes, but you probably won’t be offered those jobs as often unless you really start seeking them out. You’ll also be at risk of losing your license if you start doing things that are less than legal and don’t cover it up well enough.

That being said, with enough money, enough guns, and friends in high places, what really is legality anyway?

So if I build up enough of an reputation in the underworld of the galaxy, I can still have some fun with the unofficial stuff, also I think it would be cool to like split the mercenary group and like select the new recruits who would have no issue doing illegal stuff while the rest do the more official, like having an black ops unit, and the MC can pick and choose if they would like to do some clean jobs or get their hands dirty that day
