I have to ask when aliens first appeared there have to be a time before they reach Earth or any space facility, that people would have genuinely considered it as a first contact. Only as more and more ship appear it would have turned to escalation when did everyone fully accept that it was a invasion since, as we know from our history factions tend to hold out hope that something might change. Can we get not the game version but like a extension of first contact and slow realisation it’s a invasion, just like author of dragoon saga. A monthly in universe article , if you can
This is actually something I’ve been thinking about for awhile. I like the idea of putting out supplemental materials that help flesh out the world, First Contact included. Honestly, it will probably be a reward for when I start up a patreon. Patrons get early access to supplemental materials and a chance to vote on what comes next, very clearly modeled after what Cataphrak does with his own patrons. There would be other benefits to the patreon as well, but I think that’s a good idea.
The thing is that right now, in my mind at least, if I’m writing it should be focused on the main plot, because that’s where the most work needs to be done. However, if people were paying to get side material then it would give me a reason to take time away from the main story and work on that supplemental material.
So long story short, you’ll probably get some stuff eventually, and a more in depth look at First Contact will certainly be on the list. However, it will probably be tied to a patreon and I’m still not sure when I feel I should make that. Maybe after the release of Chapter 4 (which is getting closer btw, not close but closer). We’ll see.
I appreciate the interest regardless though!
The problem with supplemental materials is always that they take time from writing the actual game, and bring their own share of creative problems (“what do i write about this month?”) that can accelerate the writer’s burnout.
NGL, based on what i see with some games which do follow this route, i think they’re ultimately a net negative. At the very least they delay completion of the actual game, which can have all sort of unwelcome consequences.
That’s good to know, and I appreciate you bringing it up. It definitely would be adding additional work load, and the risk of burnout is something I’m more than a little worried about. It’s one of the reasons why I’ve dragged my feet on the patreon. Once I start taking people’s money, I have an obligation to provide something, and even if that something is relatively minor, it still places an additional amount of stress and pressure on me.
That said, I would like to start making a little money off of this at some point, and nothing that pays you will come without some stress and obligation, but it is definitely a big step, and one you can’t easily go back on. Right now I’m just writing, and as soon as there is a patreon, I’m providing a product that is paid for and expected. That’s not a bad thing, it’s just different, and I’m not sure I want to cross the Rubicon into that world just yet.
Again, thanks for the feedback and I value your input. We’ll see how things go in the future, but for now I’m just focused on getting Chapter 4 in the books.
To add to this, it also means deciding certain lore aspects are “locked in.” Cataphrak is working on part 4 of his series. Much of the lore has long since been committed to. You are likely still tweaking certain things.
I love good engagement as well, but I agree with you that it might be too soon for such a step.
I mean, it’s not necessary to lock it in before you’re sure it’s what you want to commit to. You could always put a “this is what I’m thinking now, but it may change” disclaimer on it. I’ve certainly had to change my lore at times when I’ve realized it doesn’t make sense in-world, and refusing to change such things probably won’t do any good to the story.
Yeah, there is a certain concrete nature to putting out supplemental materials as it does become cannon as soon as I post it. I’m also aware that I can retcon things and people would probably not be too upset about that. I just wouldn’t want to make it a habit. A retcon here and there is fine, but if I have to walk back a lot of stuff that could become problematic.
On the other hand, adding more world lore actually helps to flesh out the setting, and focusing on it could be a nice change of pace from always writing just the main narrative. A little money coming through the front door wouldn’t be bad either. However, it also comes with more stress, more responsibility, and more obligations. Pros and Cons abound.
All that said, I do want to make a Patreon. I do want to expand the world, and I do want to offer people rewards that feel worth their interest and support. It’s more just a question of when and how than if.
Right now however my focus is set on simply finishing the next chapter, which continues to be the most mechanically complex chapter so far. Which hopefully means it’s good, but definitely means it has me beating my head against the wall trying to keep all the paths straight.
Wish me luck…
Good luck just don’t burn yourself out. There are ton of games which have great idea and like you few chapters made, but either authors get too much into customisation or branching or something, and most of them die. It’s better if you take your time rather than try to do everything all at one’s.
How to get the achievement “prodigy”
I start as an eight years old and doing everything very well, win all the battle there is and against Wagner, and achieve the rank of captain, but yet it seems my grade are not exactly perfect? I saw that narration from the scene where I met my “admiral” dad in chapter three, can anyone please help?
It seems to be bugged, you can’t achieve it.
(You need to have age <= 10, but at the point the achievement would be granted the minimum age you can have is 11.)
Thanks, so it’s like a narrative bug right?
Also would u add more event for the academy arc in the future, like final exam or something like that?
It’s just a minor coding error. Stuff is a little wonky with the MCs age right now and how they age up. I’m going to take a look at it when I push Chapter 4. Hopefully smooth out some things, including the inability to get that achievement.
As for your second question, I’m not planning to add a final exam scene at this time. You do take Academic final exams but I don’t really spend time showing that because they are less important, and from a narrative perspective far less exciting, than the battle rankings. Narratively, your battle with Wagner essentially is the final exam. I think its more climatic and interesting than showing you taking a test.
Happy April everyone, it would appear it is time for another monthly update!
I’ll start by saying that Chapter 4 is still not done, but it is very close. I’ve finally finished writing the main event of the chapter and now all I need to do is the wrap up and a small, narratively linear section that leads into Chapter 5. I suspect that means that I will be done writing sometime in the next week or two.
However, as I’ve said before, and as anyone who’s worked in this genre knows, that doesn’t mean the chapter will be done by any means. I will still need to edit the text and then commit to the less than glamorous work of quicktesting and randomtesting, a process that might be longer than usual because this chapter is particularly code heavy (and messy if I’m being honest).
As always, if you want a little more insight into how things have been going you can head over to the tumblr for some deeper analysis and ramblings, but if not thanks for being here. I say it over and over again, but the support for Officer of the Fleet always blows me away. It’s been almost a year now since my first post and to still have active likes and comments coming in always makes me smile. You folks are the best, and I hope to repay you with some new content here soon!
Immensely hyped for the next chapter of this ngl
Very off topic, but what age do you need to be to romance Lucas
I think it’s just not 8 (although I have never played at 18)
Oh… I keep playing at 8
Older than 8, younger than 18 iirc
The check goes:
*if (age < 18) and (age > 11)
Note that this is after MC ages by 2 years, and this might change to single year (at that point) in the future build, since the age change is currently a little bugged in terms of continuity.
Yeah, the intent is to lock out the oldest and youngest aged starts, just to avoid gross and weird age differences. I think I mentioned this before, but the plan is to have a couple age distinct romances for younger and older MCs down the line to make up this.
