Nebula Awards 2025

It’s been about an hour since the Nebula Award in game writing was announced at this year’s SFWA conference. Although it wasn’t a CoG game that won, it was a team consisting mostly of CoG writers, so I thought it was appropriate to celebrate with this community.

The winner was A Death in Hyperspace, by Stewart C. Baker (who created and organized the project), Phoebe Barton, James Beamon, Kate Heartfield, Isabel J. Kim, Sara S. Messenger, Naca Rat, Natalia Theodoridou, M. Darusha Wehm, and Marc Fenn Wolfmoor.

Baker and Beamon were nominated for the Nebula last year for The Bread Must Rise. Baker’s solo project for CoG, Spire, Surge, and Sea, is currently in beta testing.

Phoebe Barton was nominated for The Luminous Underground.

Kate Heartfield has been nominated twice, for The Magician’s Workshop and The Road to Canterbury.

Naca Rat is the author of Teahouse of the Gods.

Natalia Theodoridou is the author of four CoG titles including three Nebula nominees: Rent-a-Vice, Sins of the Sires, and last year’s Restore, Reflect, Retry.

M. Darusha Wehm was nominated for The Martian Job.

Congratulations to the whole team!

Congratulations also to Benjamin Rosenbaum, author of The Ghost and the Golem, and to Theodoridou (again), the richly deserving nominees who wrote two of last year’s greatest games.

Congratulations to the editorial team at Choice of Games for giving a platform to these and so many other amazing authors.

Finally … SFWA Toastmaster Erin Roberts, before the award was announced, spoke about how game writing especially is a collaborative process, and that behind every successful author is a supportive community of friends, family, and fans. She gave a special shoutout to alpha and beta testers and others who provide vital support, and in that spirit … congratulations to all of us, too!

And finally-er, if you haven’t played A Death in Hyperspace yet, it’s short and free. Go play it.

Yessss, we are all thrilled and somewhat astonished!

A huge thanks to everyone who played and enjoyed the game, and to @AletheiaKnights and our other beta testers, who helped us improve it considerably!

Thank you so much! I was so thrilled you invited me to test for you, and I’m pretty sure my jaw literally dropped when I saw the list of authors involved.

By the way, if anyone is wondering what sort of brilliant beta insights undergird a Nebula victory, one of my feedback emails read, in its entirety, “I have no idea what the purple thingy means, but something should probably be done about it.”

What good news! Congratulations to all the winners. I really need to earmark some time to try this interesting game. And thanks to Aletheia for working so hard to keep our community in the loop!

To be fair, something definitely needed to be done about it. :joy:

That’s great! It’s honestly so nice and inspiring to see what CoG has been able to add to these writer’s careers, besides their own writing talents, of course.
