It’s been about an hour since the Nebula Award in game writing was announced at this year’s SFWA conference. Although it wasn’t a CoG game that won, it was a team consisting mostly of CoG writers, so I thought it was appropriate to celebrate with this community.
The winner was A Death in Hyperspace, by Stewart C. Baker (who created and organized the project), Phoebe Barton, James Beamon, Kate Heartfield, Isabel J. Kim, Sara S. Messenger, Naca Rat, Natalia Theodoridou, M. Darusha Wehm, and Marc Fenn Wolfmoor.
Baker and Beamon were nominated for the Nebula last year for The Bread Must Rise. Baker’s solo project for CoG, Spire, Surge, and Sea, is currently in beta testing.
Phoebe Barton was nominated for The Luminous Underground.
Kate Heartfield has been nominated twice, for The Magician’s Workshop and The Road to Canterbury.
Naca Rat is the author of Teahouse of the Gods.
Natalia Theodoridou is the author of four CoG titles including three Nebula nominees: Rent-a-Vice, Sins of the Sires, and last year’s Restore, Reflect, Retry.
M. Darusha Wehm was nominated for The Martian Job.
Congratulations to the whole team!
Congratulations also to Benjamin Rosenbaum, author of The Ghost and the Golem, and to Theodoridou (again), the richly deserving nominees who wrote two of last year’s greatest games.
Congratulations to the editorial team at Choice of Games for giving a platform to these and so many other amazing authors.
Finally … SFWA Toastmaster Erin Roberts, before the award was announced, spoke about how game writing especially is a collaborative process, and that behind every successful author is a supportive community of friends, family, and fans. She gave a special shoutout to alpha and beta testers and others who provide vital support, and in that spirit … congratulations to all of us, too!
And finally-er, if you haven’t played A Death in Hyperspace yet, it’s short and free. Go play it.
