My Butler (WIP) Updated: (07/22/2025)

A story of literature and love.

The story unfolds in the city of Historia—a shining jewel of Nephia, renowned for its breathtaking architecture, towering buildings draped in lush greenery, and above all, its reputation as the most heavily guarded kingdom under the rule of the royal family.

Or rather… what used to be a family.

Eight years ago, during the Great War, the King and Queen were tragically killed, leaving behind their only child—a ten-year-old daughter and the last of the royal bloodline. You.

As the sole heir to the throne, your childhood was spent in confinement within the palace walls. The outside world was deemed too dangerous until you were capable of defending yourself. Life was lonely. You had no friends, no family except for your uncle, who has served as regent, holding the throne in your stead until you are ready to ascend as queen.

Then, on your fifteenth birthday, something changed. You were assigned a butler—just four years older than you—someone who, for the first time, felt like a friend.

Now, three years later, on the eve of your eighteenth birthday, your butler remains steadfastly loyal. And yet… something feels wrong.

In all these years, they’ve never spoken about their past. Stoic and unwavering in their service, they seem to avoid any path that might lead to questions about their family, their history, or who they truly are. Stranger still, they’ve never once stepped beyond the palace grounds. While you have been allowed to venture out for brief hours, every time you asked your butler to accompany you, they refused—always claiming other duties kept them bound to the palace.

And so, a question has begun to haunt you.

Who is your butler?

Play as a princess and customize your appearance to your liking!

Features:

  • Live in the palace—a place full of secrets waiting to be uncovered.
  • Meet fascinating characters along your journey!
  • Customize your princess—her appearance and personality. (Though, half of her personality is locked; she might act scatterbrained and overly curious
  • Practice and grow your magical powers.
  • Discover hidden stories and lore throughout the city of Historia—and perhaps even visit other lands and cities in time.
  • Choose a hobby!
  • Investigate the strange dreams that have begun to haunt you.
  • And just who is your butler, really?

The butler is—and will remain—your only romance option.
There is no non-romance route, as the story is designed to focus on the developing relationship between you and your butler. That said, keep in mind: this is a slow-burn romance.

Your butler’s gender is up to you—they can be either male or female.

Male Butler

I’m working at my own pace and don’t want to promise a date I might not be able to keep, so for now I prefer to stay quiet and just share small updates from time to time. I’m also a slow writer by nature, and I don’t want to rush myself—I’d rather take my time and keep writing this with love. :3**

Some scenes might get a rewrite in the future.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this idea! Is there anything you’d like to see added? If you have suggestions or things you’d like me to include, please let me know.

Also hi! I’m Hoshi :3

Looks pretty original but not much to judge yet.

I enjoyed the beginning. Still very early though. A scatterbrained and curious character is definitely one I don’t mind playing.

I can’t comment too much yet, but so far it’s interesting.

Honestly looks very promising.
Your concept is interesting, I like mysteries, I like the MC personality. I personally do not mind single-RO games (though I imagine most people would at least want the MC to be gender-customizable).
Most importantly though - I like your writing. The best concept in the world would be worthless with bad writing (like mine…). But you write quite well.

Really a wonderful story, I love me some great princess story
I’m glad it’s only one RO this time, so I can fully dictate my feelings to him  the picture of him is lovely, btw.
And I’m looking forward to more  (bookmarked)

I enjoy writing single-romance stories because they allow the player to spend more time and focus on one specific love interest. It gives me the freedom to pour deep emotion into the relationship between those two characters, without having to divide attention between multiple paths or try to make each romance feel uniquely distinct.

I’ve also considered making the MC’s gender selectable! I’ve taken note of it, and I know many would appreciate that option. However, for now, it will remain locked. Since the story for My Butler was primarily written from the perspective of a female MC, I believe it keeps the narrative more consistent.

That said, I’ve been thinking about possibly letting players choose to play as a prince—or even a non-binary heir—in the future. But for now, it’s just a thought. My main focus is still on finishing and refining the story!

Honestly, I’m really happy that you enjoy my writing. I’m not a native English speaker, but I’ve loved writing in English for many years and have learned a lot along the way. Writing takes time, so don’t worry about being bad at it—don’t rush yourself. With time, you’ll start to notice the progress you’re making.

I’d play it because I love royal games, but a female MC is just a big no for me.
Too bad…

Chapter One is finished!
It’s over 15k words long—originally closer to 20k but I decided to move some parts to Chapter Two where they’ll fit better.
I hope you enjoy it!

Since I love listening to music while I write, I wanted to share something for those who enjoy music while reading. This is the one I listen to most often on YouTube while writing: Piano

Oh my, that was so soooo good. I love the bickering between the queen and her daughter, it was hilarious :joy:
I love our butler so much and he’s playing the piano and sings a song (maybe the diary has something to do with the song…) I think Ethan is quite more than a farmer’s son and a butler.

The Butler is someone who loves the piano, but never liked playing it for someone. They always enjoyed it in peace and silence, so doing it for the princess shows just how much the Butler feels comfortable around her to not just play but sing for her too. I’m really happy you like the story so far!

Also, I noticed a bug after the scene where you finish reading the journal and have the choice to turn back or continue. It should work now but if it still doesn’t, let me know!

Wow this was very good. Also thank you for making the RO GoC, love seeing more stories on here that have GoC ROs instead of the usual standard of Female locked MC with male only Ros.

That’s not even close to “the standard” here. Stories are rarely female locked, and on the odd occasion they are, the ROs are varied (the female locked protag also gets changed to selectable because the writer caved to pressure) I can count on one hand stories where the MC remained female only(and actually saw a release), let alone with male only ROs… and I’ve been lurking for years. Many have been abandoned entirely.

Anyway, regarding the MC.. author, don’t feel pressured to change it because a few others may lament the lock. There are already MANY stories with choosable MCs—write what you want to write.

Thank you, reading this truly made me very happy :3
I know that most stories feature a gender-selectable main character, and I understand that many people appreciate having that option. I won’t lie—part of the reason I initially considered making the MC gender-selectable was because I was afraid of receiving negative comments about the story or the main character.

That’s why your message means a lot to me. It reassures me, and I can confidently say that if I ever decide to make the MC gender-selectable, it will be entirely my choice—not because of pressure or anxiety about how the story might be received.

I want the story to be seen for what it is—the mystery, the fun, the hint of romance with your butler, and the joy of storytelling.

I know that My Butler may not attract a large following, especially because of the fixed-gender MC, and I understand that. But I don’t mind. As long as there are people who genuinely enjoy it, that’s more than enough to make me happy.

Yeah, that’s something many writers have to accept at some point… that trying to please everyone will NEVER be possible… ever. The more you attempt it, the worse it can get. You’ll only stress yourself out trying, watering down your work in the process, and there will always be people dissatisfied with your creation. That’s just how it goes. Just to be clear, I’m not speaking of constructive criticism, though I would think that’s a given.

Stories that started out locked (female or male MC, or static ROs) then switched to selectable always read weirdly to me. You can tell they were meant to be a certain way, and while the stories may still be enjoyable to an extent, they just feel… off. Like a shadow of what could have been. This is why I will always support gender locked stories, whether male or female. I might be a bit disappointed if something is locked to male only (Sabers of Infinity as an example) but I’d rather authors stick to their guns than alter their writing to suit others, and ruining their work in the process.

Hey there, wanted to say that your writing style had me hooked and am looking forward to future updates! I’m a sucker for romance between the servant class and nobility so this piqued my interest.

That said, I did see that English isn’t your native language but the main critique I have is keeping the narrative point of view consistent. It inconsistently flip flops between first person POV (when using “I, me, my, mine, myself”) and second person POV (“you, your, yours, yourself”). With an inconsistent narrative, it breaks immersion and causes confusion. Most of the narrative involving MC looks to be in first person so I’m sure these could’ve been editing erorrs too.

Otherwise, for a WIP, it looks good so far!

I will keep that in mind and correct it in the next update! Thank you for reading!

Chapter Two is progressing slowly but steadily.

I wanted to share a small progress update. I’m currently fixing some errors in Chapter One and also plan to rewrite a few scenes I’m not fully satisfied with. Chapter Two will be much longer than the first—I’m aiming for around 30,000 words. I want to include more choices, but also add extra content to flesh things out.

Something else I wanted to mention: as the story progresses, you’ll begin to notice small clues that might help you uncover what’s really going on with your butler. I won’t be adding obvious pointers like “You found a clue!”—instead, I’d rather let you discover them on your own and decide if they’re worth remembering.

Whether or not you uncover these clues will depend on your choices—what you say, where you go, and how you interact with others. Even if your MC doesn’t find every hidden detail, the truth will still unfold naturally as the story continues. These extra hints are just there to give curious readers a bit of a head start or make them question things a little sooner.

Last but not least, I won’t give a release date for Chapter Two just yet, but I can already tell it won’t be coming out this month.

PS: I put the demo on private for now. It will be available somewhere this month when I succeed to rewrite chapter one a little. Have a lovely day : )
