Well. I’d say this month has been quite a busy one. Still have some exams to finish but it marks the end of my semester as well as finally getting that update out. Along with a host of other general creative endeavors. I truly hope everyone else had a productive may as well and may June be as productive as this month was!
In today’s news: I’m struck with an urge to put in my character list a “trope” section… and then use it for a trope that, although applies to the character, is pretty much irrelevant. Like “cool shades”.
This is ridiculous. I blame the heatwave.
Presumably the “cool shades” wold counteract this.
Unfortunately I only have “nerd glasses”.
My “nerd glasses” has tinting, so they double as “cool shades”
So do mine, but only when it’s sunny, not when I’m sitting writing in a room with closed curtains. But it’s still way too hot!
Mine are always tinted, because I’m extremely light sensitive.
How hot is it over there?
We had it really hot last week here, but it should be about to turn into copious amounts of rain instead. Which the soil really needs by now.
But the increased humidity could mean I’ll still be as much of a sweaty, useless mess.
Ah, mine are photochromic; it’s really handy, since I don’t need separate shades, and I still see when it’s dark (well, somewhat; my eyes are a bit wonky when they switch to grayscale vision) or when I go inside from a sunny day.
It’s… hot enough to be estimated to reach a new record for May. News says 12th day in a row for what counts as “really hot” (>=25°C) days (although that’s the highest for the day, not the average, but my place doesn’t have air conditioning). Also, high temperature warning, so yeah. Nothing unusual for July (although I hate it even then… I’m on my best somewhere between 18° and 22°), but it is still May!
And the worst part is there’s apparently still no rain coming, so, very very high wild fire risk too.
I finally finished my exams and i can now focus back on my wip, I’m super excited and hope that I’ll be able to hold a schedule to put out content more often !
I thought I’d pop in and provide a little update for my WIP, life, and writing group.
I finally pushed out an update for my WIP this month. I should’ve known bi-weekly updates wouldn’t be sustainable. But, given all the interruptions and setbacks of the last two months, I’m pretty happy with this latest update. With this update, I added about 32K words to the story, but what’s crazy is that almost 3/4 of those words were contained in the last of the four scenes I wrote. Which is a retelling of an ambush that occurred and was a lot of fun to write about.
I’ll also take a minute to plug the writing group that I’m in. We are currently on our third assignment, and receiving honest and helpful feedback for my writing has been super beneficial. In fact, with the latest assignment, I received great feedback when I wrote a piece so stuffed with purple BS prose it would have put Violet Beauregarde to shame. We could use some new writers to join our group, and if anyone is interested, just send me a message.
Now I’m picturing you had an assignment to use as many words as possible.
The assignment was to write a scene without sight. I went the ‘MC has to navigate somewhere in absolute darkness’ route, @Robd5822 went the ‘blind character’ route.
The result was very purple.
The problem was that I didn’t have a lot going on in my original scene and was focused solely on writing a vivid description of everything without using sight. This created a double-whammy of trying to pad the page with descriptions to make up for nothing happening. I’ve also found that without visual indicators in the description, even in the written word, it takes longer to fully describe something without those indicators.
@Robd5822 and @Cecilia_Rosewood,
So the writing group did end up having assignments like this (and was it a therapy scene that was mentioned a while ago?) ?
I didn’t follow along to discord, because it seemed like things was heading in the other direction, instead of stuff like that (and I’ve been generally avoiding discord for months now).
Yeah, we’re into our second typical ‘writing assignment’ now. Starting with a story outlining the stroll might’ve not been the most thrilling way to start the group. But I thought starting at the beginning would be helpful for some people who aren’t familiar with different ways of outlining a story. I thought the Discord server would be a better place to meet. That way, we’re not burying important messages under side conversations. You’re welcome to jump on Discord whenever, as the strolls don’t build upon one another but are self-contained, so someone can jump in whenever.
If I ever decide to dive deep into a multiverse like any card-carrying superhero world should, I'll definitely need to include something like this (context: I was rewriting some Marvel comics in my head)
“Young lady, I believe you’re on a wrong timeline.”
But more importantly: I’ve been going back and forth about this, and I think I’m pretty much exhausted all avenues I can without other doctors’ opinions, so.
Since these games are single-player, would it be bad if the player could select themself how powerful they want their character to be? So, instead of, say, having a fixed amount of skill points they need to use, there would be a maximum amount they could use, but they could choose to use less if they want?
Personally, I prefer when a game that lets you customize your character’s powers also lets you choose how powerful you want to be.
Some people prefer playing overpowered, others prefer playing an underdog overcoming a challenge, so why not let them have the experience that will be most satisfying to them?
Unless of course, the MC’s specific power level is important for the plot.
Depends. Besides power-level-specific plots, more MC power while keeping the same enemy power means less narrative tension.
I’m probably still going to disappoint (at least a subsection of) people who want to be overpowered, since there’s no way I’m going to let the MC be the powerfulest of them all…
@JBento true, but if you’re trying to solve a murder case, does it really matter how much you can bench press?
It might. For starters, your increased strength means you can more confidently press aggressive witnesses/suspects, because being able to one-punch KO them if they start shit is a VERY different situation than them being able to do it to YOU.
