Knights of Venus - 37k word Mech WIP - Updated 05/16/24

Like I said I am literally Koschei
I’m him.

Koschei isn’t a person, it’s an identity, an idea, a spirit; the prior incarnation failed to do its duty so it’s time for the cycle to turn anew and for the new incarnation to do better

Haven’t read it yet, but I like the premise! The whole mercenary mechs working for the corporate overlords sounds interesting. It also reminds me of Armored Core big time, is it inspired by it?

Shamelessly so. I knew I wanted to write about mechs, but considering that ‘IF Gundam’ already existed in Mecha Ace (shout out @Cataphrak), I thought I’d take a more grounded/gritty track by leaning on Armored Core/BattleTech/that kind of thing. In terms of scale you’re definitely in the Armored Core range, with your average armature in the 6-8 meter range.

Honestly it’s mostly just what I grew up with, my view of mechs has been shaped by both franchises. There will probably be a bit of Lancer influence at some point as well (there are bulked up Atmospheric Suits that basically act as 1/2s, you might get to see some in Chapter 1 actually), but that’ll take a bit of a back seat.

Anyways, I hope you give the game a play and enjoy! Please come back here with any feedback you have (or just to chat, I don’t mind either way)!

Will we be able to equip mechs with claws like the one from god geas and purely melee?

Yes you’ll have melee options, no I don’t think claws will be one. Mech loadouts are something I’m actively working out right now, but as is it’s looking like you can take two of a selection of weapons with you on a mission, which will determine how you can fight. On your first mission the only melee weapon at your disposal will be a pile driver, but more might become available with time.

Feels like coming up with a final selection of viable weapons is going to be one of the more annoying aspects, each option has to be something that’s able to get through the kind of armor that Venus’s toxic atmosphere, immense heat, and various other dangers can’t get through.
Close-range rapid fire: some sort of machine gun that might not have the best penetration but quantity is quality all it’s own. What you’d use as ammunition, not sure; tungsten? Depleted uranium?
A longer range rifle sort of thing, high penetration, possibly explosive but needs time between shots?
Some sort of missile launcher, more for the purpose of destroying something than as an actual anti-personel thing.
You’d want variation but not to the point where battle scenes would be a pain in the ass to code.

This is awesome. Consider it on my wishlist already. I hope you don’t go too mad with the Bad Ends (or at least signpost them fairly clearly) because I don’t want to always be playing it safe, but getting bodied when I tried to tackle the knight alone in an industrial model made sense.

I do not intend to punish the player, or make a death simulator. In the prologue I’ve played fast and loose with badends (exempting the first one which I think is fine since theres no investment yet), and in the future I mostly intend badends to come from making obviously stupid choices. Additionally, once the game is in a (much) more complete state I’d like to add chapter checkpoints, which should mitigate frustration and allow me to create challenging missions where appropriate.

Keep in mind that there’s been a bit of terraforming going on for a while, so that atmosphere isn’t quite the “instant death” it is for our venus today. Still pretty bad, but enough that people can build stuff that isn’t crushed instantly by the pressure.

Would be pretty funny if there was the option to go “he- Hewwoooo??” while communicating with the knight which badends us when Sunny snaps our neck from sheer embarrassment.

I like it so far, can’t wait to see it continue.

Why when it comes to more gritty mechs does no one ever remember Steel Battalion :smiling_face_with_tear:

I’m just coping about my favourite game lol, you’re definitely going in the right direction! It feels a lot like a slightly more gritty Armored Core, which is great.

If that’s what people are getting then I’ve done my job perfectly. I’m a sucker for hard sci-fi, so moving forwards I’ll be trying to blend that with mechs as best I can. Energy weapons are too much of a staple of the genre for me to leave out completely, but I’m keeping them in the “experimental super weapons” stage rn.

I’m in the middle ground on sparing the khight if I ever fight her, knowing it’s gonna be a one way battle. But I know I’m gonna try to take her down. I just don’t know if I’m going to kill or not when I try. Why don’t you kill my colleagues and friends maybe and Put Sammy Endanger Knowing that she was the only survivor including our character. To my character’s personality, all his colleagues had a life and he respected them. Family’s ambitions People he could trust. When I work I like to know my work colleagues. Not even though they might screw me over or be my friend. At least I get to know the individual. But how you told the story about how all this fell apart made me really want to fight the khight and try to kill her. It’s just a huge dilemma to me.

I’ll be checking this one out. I’m a sucker for mech related stories :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

“Huh.” David muses. “Good to fly on your own wings I suppose.”
Very very nice and surprising answer to MC’s callsign Raven. Ah, already making Raven feel special

FWIW she always lives that fight, even if you try to kill her. I simply don’t want to code the branching that would be required if she were dead in the prologue, although she will remember your choice.

There’s also an easter egg if you use Lynx

In other news, I’m properly into writing the next “chapter” now, and I’ve decided it will consist of multiple discrete missions within the chapter (three, in my current draft). What I want to know is, would people prefer to have all three released in one big update, or have me publish each mission as it’s own update as I finish them?

  • I want big, multi-mission releases (longer, less frequent updates)
  • I want each mission published as it is finished (shorter, more frequent updates)

The results here aren’t binding per se, ultimately I’ll go with what feels best, but I would like to gauge community opinion before I decide.

“Stand by for titanfall”

Probably closest I can get to TF3. Not sure if it’s my dog wifi or pc but the first choice where you die after you pick the first made my game load forever. Maybe just me but wanted to notify in case not.

Really enjoyed the demo! Very good pacing and introduction. Interested in the world already and hungry for some lore exposition. Especially enjoyed the colour customisation and imagining further options and upgrades in the future. I see huge potential, take your time to make this and I can’t wait to follow this as it progresses.

For a slight suggestion, maybe some more callsign suggestions might be useful for less imaginative people like me during that section. Perhaps a list of solid one worders would be cool, but isn’t mandatory at all. :slightly_smiling_face:

Does this also happen when you reach the end of content/die on other choices? If so it’s likely the scene change causing lag, which I believe is a thing that can happen, but not a thing I know how to fix or if I even can.

The problem is that I’m also a less imaginative person :sob: I’ll do what I can, probably when I add a bigger list of names that can trigger arthurian, but no promises.

Good news, I’m writing that now! I’ve come up with some big corporate names that you’ll be taking jobs from, and written up their glossary entries. Hopefully you’ll be satisfied.
