Well if had to guess keep it out of rades hands until the kingdom can decide who should rule and to keep the kingdom from splintering. There are multiple dukes of the realm not just the two we officially know of.

I like to pretend my MCs are all just the same guy in different AUs and they’re all aware of each other. Despite their differences, they all agree that the Marshal is weird.

thats a top contender in the usurper route though another moment i loved was when usurper mc is talking to elya in her cell and she says mira made a mistake. usurper thinks elya still feels sorry for mc then elya says she wishes mira killed mc instead of maiming them and usurper is like “i know lol” instead of being taken aback or anything
at this point in the story mira was dead, vedran dead, elya in a cell (soon to be dead), and usurper who was last in the line of succession as king. mira worst nightmare basically since my mc never reconciled with her

Expecting loyalty from mc is dumb
You killed his mom infront of him,maimed him and sent him to war . It should be considered miracle that loyal mc doesn’t kill them all, stays loyal and follows wishes of sobik and stays puppet of bloodline of him and mira.

if you abuse something from birth you can exert great fear and control over it even if its stronger than you. drago and his bewilderbeast from httyd2 shows this and in real life some elephants are tortured into submission like this, it’s pretty sickening
hopefully mc can grow past all that was done to them by the end and say “i, the unbroken one ™ am finally free”

plus the loyalty ellie expects is one born from love and not fear or despair, reciprocated from her own love, something very few others have ever shown to the marshal (only darin and obren/lada/milon). its a loyalty earned rather than demanded (at least unless her coldness drops to sobik’s level of -1000 or even rade’s level of -500)
and honestly with high strength and warmth shes the better ruler anyway, mc is better suited as the magister militum which is basically the ruler for all matters of war, second only to her as she says herself. though maybe she wouldnt mind us taking a crack at non-wartime ruling back in krorid too

Hi everyone! Apologies for being inactive for a while, it’s been crazy busy with me. I’ve read all the feedback, though, and I’m back to writing.
In regard to the question of player agency, that is something that will have to be solved later. At the moment–because of the three main paths–these chapters are absolutely enormous, especially compared to something like ITFO or Whiskey-Four. More meaningful choices can be better implemented later. I’ll do a spring cleaning update, probably after this one, where I can go through and flush (flesh? fluesh? wtf is it?) out the previous chapters.

Then they all look around wondering why everything froze.
The reader took a break at a crucial point.
The Forces all break for a break until reader gets back.
Oh and Cowboy Marshal and Rade get it on without anyone the wiser since reader left reading again.
