How many love interests

I mean, yeah, it’ll depend on how many ROs the author is comfortable with writing  if you wanna write a whole bunch of people, then more power to you :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ll also note as I’ve noted before that bisexual and playersexual aren’t really the same thing… bi representation would entail having a character always be bi in every playthrough, which can be worth acknowledging (providing it makes sense for the character).

The main issue would be that bi+straight would be at the expense of gay players, while gay+bi+straight or just bi would not be

I do feel like gay+bi+straight is the ideal if you’re willing to write a big cast, but that does lead to a pretty significant profusion of characters :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Edit: Mainly, I just don’t want to discourage people from writing more gay characters

Back to the original question - I would say that your cast doesn’t have to be exactly even. If you think the established characters are well written, I would say go for it. Tacking on another character just for the sake of romance is not needed and they might be a lot more work for nothing.

My advice is just this - for every possible orientation, put yourself in that place regardless of what your’s is. Would you be okay if those were your options compared to the others? If not, why would you expect that group to want to play your game? (If their focus is romance of course.) I find people often write for what they would personally want, so this is something to consider.

Although at the same time, for my own characters, I never actually plan their romance. It just happens as I write 'em and don’t write 'em for that specifically, so I may not be the most relatable advice giver.

To reiterate, I think you’re fine with that number if that’s what feels right.

I’m not saying LGBT are rare, I’m saying straights are the majority, even in society that didn’t follow christianity.

Honestly I don’t mind gender flipped characters unless they are really obviously originally a guy, most of the time I don’t even notice because for me they will always be a girl, plus I get to deal with one less male character so it’s totally win/win for me!

Yeah I played a game that updates weekly with just 1 female RO (and one of the main cast is a lesbian that isn’t a RO :rage:) and that 1 option sucked, so basically I just skip through everything each week hoping that another girl with show up :disappointed:

And I’m saying that we don’t really know what the numbers are. We don’t have reliable numbers. We can’t tell when the self-reported numbers are going to stop going up, and self-reporting is very subjective and unreliable. It also depends on what you call someone who is mainly attracted to the opposite gender, but occasionally to the same one… straight? bi? Where is the threshold? So while I think we can safely guess that there are more people who are mainly heterosexually attracted rather than mainly gaily attracted, I don’t think we can yet conclude that the majority of people are only heterosexually attracted, or at least only have the potential to be heterosexually attracted. It’s difficult to determine anything conclusive from the evidence. (And even a lot of societies that were open to gay relationships expected heterosexual marriage for the purpose of making children, which again skews the data. Meanwhile, in societies that expect same-gender relations, they could be pretty ubiquitous… leading me to suspect that there’s a fair amount of flexibility for many people, just not all of them… and it’s hard to tell whether someone’s doing something because it’s expected or because of actual attraction, so… yeah… :man_shrugging:t2:)

Lol, ok then LGBT are the majority…

I said “we don’t know what the numbers are,” not “LGBT are the majority.” But if you’d like to answer any of my actual points, I’d be happy to discuss those.

This is very good advice, and I think more game writers should take it into consideration.

Yeah; these days, I basically just leave WiP threads if it’s clear that the author doesn’t want to give us well-done gay romances… :disappointed:

Well thankfully the game I’m talking about isn’t here, it’s another IF, but yeah it’s heartbreaking that we get less options in the first place, but when the one option you’re given isn’t one you’re interested it in totally sucks :disappointed: I mean I like girls but I’m not attracted to ALL the girls in the whole world :stuck_out_tongue:

Hopefully with Heart’s Choice, we’ll be able to provide a much broader slate of options for players.

Are those generally going to be generally all-including, slated for specific gender-orientation combos, or a mix thereof? Or is it too soon to say? As far as the “how many” question, any idea if those are likely to prioritize greater number of options, or fewer deeper ones, or if that’ll vary based on what the author wishes to do?

A reality that has been shaped for centuries by conservative Islamic and Judeo-Christian doctrine and ideology which made it often mortally dangerous to come out as anything other then 100% straight and preferring the missionary position.
Look at Ancient China prior to the Mongol Yuan Dynasty (who sadly brought with them a less tolerant steppe nomad culture with corresponding views on intercourse). Those early Chinese dynasties have been widely speculated to have featured both male and female harems. Nevertheless even afterwards there has never been a heavy prohibition or stigma (at least among the Chinese elites) of homosexuality prior to the increased Western influence in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The homosexual traditions among the neighbouring Japanese elite have been widely known and documented particularly during the era of the Samurai. And then in the West there were of course the ancient Greek and Roman cultures other posters have already mentioned. I think it is fair to say that perhaps a majority of the elite men of those societies could have been ranked as 1,2 or even 3 on the Kinsey scale.

Of course the great flaw of historical and archeological research and chronicles are that the majority of those only tend to document the lives of the elites particularly in ancient history when writing itself was a precious art not to be wasted chronicling the habits of the commoners.
As Mara used to say, even after the dominance of Christianity had been firmly asserted in the West, in the South of Europe in particular you can still see a clear pattern that incidences of homo and bisexuality have remained far higher among the elites (who had far less to fear from such things as the inquisition). A fact that has sadly not escaped some of my fellow socialists who have often used it as a pretext to join in on condemning homosexuality by terming it a “bourgeois affliction”. :unamused:

Unlike Choice of Games, Heart’s Choice authors will be able to submit concepts that are specifically gender/orientation locked. That said, as a company we’re also making sure that doesn’t mean we’re just going to be putting out a bunch of F/M stories, we’re actively looking to make sure we have a healthy amount of F/F, M/M, and other queer romance options. As for balance of romance options and depth, that I believe will the fairly author dependent, so as for what will actually be in our starting lineup, it’s a little premature to say.

Out of curiosity, will those be labeled in the write up? And I’m not just asking if it will be labeled for only the queer relationships, but also for the straight ones? I always get nervous when it’s not spelled out and it would help me if games that are going to only have straight ROs are clearly labeled as such just as I’m sure straight folks would like to know if there will only be queer ROs

We haven’t mentioned descriptions yet, but I’m sure the best way to clearly state things like orientation and gender of PC and romance options will be talked about at some point, and if not, I’ll bring it up. (But again, too far out for me to give any kinds of definitives.) And yes, I’ll make certain that the straights are included in that like the rest of us normal people. (I’m sorry I couldn’t help myself.)

okay… after reading from the first until the last post, i cant help but thinking about it… and now i want to ask your opinion about something…

SORRY ABOUT A LONG POST IN ADVANCE

as @ParrotWatcher knew, i decide to work on something (Visual Novel to be exact… and the game was based on my last collaborated one shot comic with a friend), but mind you… i’ve never make a game before, so im learning by doing, and it will not come out in the near future as im doing it by myself (the art, story, coding and whatnot) well, not really… i’ve got a little help from a ‘straight’ friends for the coding part. the catch though, im uncomfortable to discuss about RO part with him at first as the story was originally his creation :grimacing: fortunatelly… even though the first concept of the story was basically his own, i got a leeway for the VN version after we decide to use an alternative story --not his original story-- (he is too busy with his work, so he wouldn’t be able to do much with the game,… and it means i can do as much as i want with it :triumph:).
umm, okay i just realized i didn’t give much explanation about the game… sorry, but i can’t tell much as i have nothing much for now (i just put the first reworked/revamped concept aside as i realized its not good enough).

Now about the game

The story will take a place in a world where there is a popular ‘real-life fighting game’ with a weapon and skill that can be summoned from your smartphone, and everyone have a class just like in rpg games (knight, archer, etc). you can choose your PC gender and change their name…

*sorry for the unfinished image, as i have to stop working on it several months ago because of an accident with my laptop

the game become so popular coz the rumor said that the game has super rare healing skill that can be used in real-life, the name of the skill is “Divine Recovery” which can heal everything (even the missing part of the body)… and beside that people can convert the in game point to real money, so its not uncommon for a teenager that played quite well with the game to have more money than their parents that didn’t play the game. though there is a risk of losing your life if you lose the fighting and your opponent decide to kill you.

that being said

the part i want to ask was about the RO option, as i just decide the game will be focused on romance with 30% - 40% plot story. i have 5 Romance option (no picture for now, coz i didn’t draw them yet), 2 female, 2 male, and 1 will be the same sex as your PC. though i will put 1 female and 1 male in each branch of the story (i want to divide the story into 2 path) and the genderfliped one will be available in both path (the catch… PC will be able to romance him/her after playing both path first as i want to make him/her character more appealing and seems more alive to you as you will meet him/her in both path and you will get to know him/her better EDIT : and dont worry, you dont have to play straight as you can romance the Bi RO in each path) each RO will have different personality and backstory, and they will play a big role in a story with you. OH!! almost forgot, they will be available for both gender. (so you can play as gay/lesbian PC for both path to pursue the last same gender RO option. or you can play bi character --gay/lesbi in the fisrt path, and straight in the second path or something like that-- or, you can play straight for both path and not pursue the last same sex RO.)

i’ll give more info about the RO and the game later after i figured it out

EDIT : did anyone notice that i call the playable character as PC and didn’t called them MC, well its because one of the RO was the Main Character (MC) from the comic

EDIT 2 : the candidate for female RO (from one of my yonkoma comic)

comic strip kitkat2a

:bowing_man:

so, that being said… my question is… (especially for @ParrotWatcher, @TSSL, @idonotlikeusernames, @Lizzy) is it alright for me to make the canon gay RO genderfliped like that? coz i dont intend to insult anyone with my game…
Thanks

and before anyone point it out, i know my game sounds too ambisious, but i hope i’ll manage make it see the light :crossed_fingers:

That depends. Do you have a problem with making them genderflipped?

If not, then go ahead and take the suggestion of others. But if you do, then you stick with what you have, regardless of who you’ll “insult”.

Don’t feel like you’re forced to make changes for others. It’s your game, you decide what changes and what doesn’t.

I know this isn’t related to the question, but I felt it need to be said.

well, i have no problem obviously

i don’t feel forced at all (yet) , and i want to make the “players-to be” enjoy my game when i manage to make it.

and thanks for saying it

PM’d my reply, because it was a little over-long, and somewhat off-topic, but essentially it boiled down to: no, that’s fine. Well, as long as the character is a good one, of course. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

In my (currently in progress) series that begins with The Magician’s Task, there will be a total of eight ROs: 4 male and 4 female. Although the series (a work in progress) is high fantasy with some comedy mixed in, it also has a big focus on romance, so I’m trying my best to provide a big cast of romantic options who all have different personalities, motivations, and skills.

Here are some brief descriptions of the ROs that have already been introduced and play big roles in the story:

Rigel:
At 24 years old, Rigel is the best healer in your village, and is highly skilled at many areas of the trade, such as potions, surgeries, and natural medicines. He is extremely intelligent, and also works as a scribe, but is also quite introverted and has some nervous ticks when he talks. He has light brown skin, a thin build, and an average height. He generally enjoys reading in his spare time. Although complex, he tends to lean towards a “good” nature.

Mabelin:
At 29 years of age, Mabelin is the vice-captain of the guard and by far the most skilled swordsmen in the village, though she is also more than proficient in hand to hand combat, and with bow and arrows, clubs, and other weapons. She is very loyal, brave, and goodhearted, though she can also be equally impulsive and quick to anger, and she has a habit of teasing, sarcasm, and arrogance. She is tall, with dark brown skin, a giant mohawk, and a toned build. She enjoys sparring and playing chess her spare time. Although complex, she tends to lean towards a “medium/good” nature.

Keano:
At 23 years of age, Keano is one of the best archers in the village, and he is also quit skilled in tree climbing, speed, and wielding a dagger. He works as a farmer, and is very outgoing and charismatic, and is also quite the romantic. He is tall, with blonde hair, stubble, and green eyes. He has a thin but toned build. He enjoys drinking, dancing, and singing in his spare time, and although complex, he tends to learn towards a “medium/good” nature.

Violet:
At 18 years of age, Violet is a very skilled demon huntress, and also one of the best thieves in the village, second only to Saza the thief-master. She is introverted, cold, and selfish, but she can also be very brave. She is also extremely intelligent and ambitious, and is adept at climbing, stealth, and combat with throwing daggers. She also has a magical necromantic wand and has a good amount of knowledge pertaining to necromancy. She has light brown skin, a bald head with tattoos covering it, an average height, and a slim build. Although complex, she tends to lean towards a “bad” nature.

I also plan on having 4 more ROs, though since they won’t be introduced until the sequel to TMT, I have outlined less about their personalities, skills, and motivations.

Blossom:
A 19 year old fairy with the ability to fly and create powerful illusions. She can also turn into a human, but after the transformation is complete, it is irreversible. She has an hourglass figure and is very mischievous and bossy. Although complex, she tends to lean towards a “medium/bad” nature.

Kidas:
A 31 year old knight, Kidas is an extremely skilled warrior who specializes in axes. He is the general of the kingdom of Githrad, and also has minor magical powers. He is tall, with a muscular build and dark brown skin. He is aggressive and impulsive, but has a brilliant tactical mind. Although complex, he tends to lean towards a “bad” nature.

Izzy:
A 28 year old royal adviser. She is extremely intelligent, and has a very peaceful, diplomatic personality. She is curvy with a slightly heavier build, and has very pale skin. She also has broken hips, and uses a wheelchair. Although complex, she tends to lean towards a “good” nature.

Jude:
An 18 year old servant. Jude has red hair, freckles, and an average height, with a slightly heavier build. He is very shrewd and selfish, and has sticky fingers. However, he is also very creative and can be very loyal to those who he likes. Although complex, he tends to lean towards a “medium/bad” nature.

Long story short…I think, ideally, it’s best to have many ROs with complex, gripping personalities that set them all apart.
