How does one go about reading code in published stories?

I didn’t know which category this belonged in, so I put it in Meta for the time being.

I’ve seen some people say that they checked the code of published stories for any particular reason, and it has me stumped, because the only method I know of for code-checking only appears to work for WIPs. (And just to dispel those concerns right now, no, I’m not asking so I can start cheating at games, I just get curious sometimes is all. Occasionally, I’ll make a decision that has an outcome that makes me go, “wait, so what was the code for that?”)

If you have the game on steam, it’s fairly easy to do. I believe there’s a way to do it with the web version, if you use the developer tools built into the browser, but I’ve never done that.

If you want instructions on how to do it for the steam versions, let me know and I’ll provide it. Like you, I use it because authors seldom make sense with their stat changes or choices. It’s never clear wtf a choice will do, so I need to know–I hate wasting hours playing a game and having to restart again because my MC doesn’t understand what she’s choosing as a response will probably have different results than she intended!
