Definitely excited about this one. Hope we get more details later on, but no pressure on the author and editor haha. Medieval fantasy/court politics is popular here so I’m actually surprised that no HC has done it before, now that I think about it. I’ve always wanted a romance game where the MC is a knight, and this one seems close enough.
I’m the editor of that one, and I haven’t been saying a lot of specifics about it because I haven’t yet discussed with the author what they might or might not want shared, but I will say that based on what I’ve seen in the forum in this thread and elsewhere, I think there’s a lot about it that people will enjoy.
Definitely interested in that one as well, nothing against Vampires but it seems like we get romance stories with them pretty regularly, this one sounds more distinctive since HC hasn’t had a High Fantasy/Knight game yet.
Yeah sadly I do think Moonrise had a bit of unneeded backlash against it when it was first released which I think was uncalled for. It’s important we all can get a few stories that cater to what we prefer if possible. Thankfully I think HC has finally gotten a better range of F/F focused games out there.
I keep hearing that “the majority” views Heart’s Choice as a massive disappointment, and I’m just not seeing it. Vampire’s Kiss got more attention on this forum than any of the last few CoG releases, and most of it was very enthusiastic. Their Majesties’ Pleasure has been one of the most warmly received and generally talked-about games this year. The majority of games are rated 4.6 or better in the omnibus app, and of those with enough Steam reviews for there to be a consensus, only one has “Mixed” reviews - the others are at least mildly positive.
But then does that not say it all? 2-3 games out of the what, 15?, having a ‘somewhat positive’ on steam and the rest being mixed at best, negative at worst? The 10 reviews this game has received is not quite the win you think it is…
What? It’s eight out of sixteen games on Steam that have at least 75% positive reviews. And of the other eight, one has mixed reviews (only two-thirds positive). The other seven just don’t have enough reviews for a Steam consensus, but glancing over them, most of what I’m seeing is positive.
…Most of them have 10 reviews, 20 on a good day. Once again i dont think 7-15 people saying ‘game’s alright’ is any kind of irrefutable proof that HC is doing well.
I don’t want to post more because i’m already going offtopic, but i’ll end it with this:
Nobody talks about HCs, hell nobody ever mentions HC ROs as being their favorite, despite this label being created with the purpose of focusing on romance. If anything I see more discussions on this forum about Ros in HCs that people hated. HC is laughed at and badmouthed on every occasion it comes up in conversations… The sentiment outside of the forums is simply not a positive one, no matter how much you vpretend things are different.
I agree; the impression I’ve had was that many of this year’s selection of Heart’s Choice games have been very solidly well-received. Ultimately my opinion on “the point of HC” has not changed since I posted about it about this time last year:
CoG games cannot be gender- or orientation-locked, and there are very few HGs with gender-locked protagonists, let alone M/M or F/F; HC games include guaranteed romantic happy endings which is by no means a given on other labels. HC provides authors who want to write games that fit their style with an advance, which is nothing to be sniffed at. The games aren’t universally less popular than other labels (I have seen numbers that very much confirm that), and even if they were - that wouldn’t mean they’re pointless. People enjoy underratedgames all the time. I’ve seen plenty of disdain about the entirety of the CoG label, or about HG games outside of the blockbuster heavy hitters - that doesn’t mean they have no value or indeed popularity.
I do not have any particular horse in any debate over the merits of this particular game - I enjoyed it but understand why someone else wouldn’t - but I find it odd that someone not personally enjoying one, or a selection (or even all!) of the games from a label should mean that the label as a whole is too flawed to exist.
Well no, I imagine if you focus on only one part of the evidence I gave, it probably wouldn’t constitute “irrefutable proof,” which I never claimed to have in the first place. And I still haven’t seen any evidence that “the majority” is disappointed with HC.
@HarrisPS - I think a lot of folks who are disappointed with HC are disappointed mainly that it’s a whole line of games that have the audacity not to cater specifically to them.
To be honest, with all the people I’ve talked about HC’ games, we all agree on one thing: there is not enough romance, and the romance there is lacks any kind of depth. And the sad thing is that this applies to practically every game published for HC, so it’s not like one or two were a bit off. Which baffles me, because the purpose of HC was supposed to be about focusing on romance and it’s just… quite disappointing.
I don’t think the brand should be deleted, but it needs to change. I just want the love story to be the focus, to be the most important thing, and not an afterthought between unrelated plot scenes or selecting to talk to your RO a few times.
And if other games with heavy plots manage that, proper romances, surely a label for romantic games should too. No one will complain about a lack of plot for these, or clichés, or whatever. But give us the one thing you promise to deliver, please.
I really don’t want to linger on a word but calling big HGs “blockbusters” is a little laughable
Comparing Hosted games to 200mln investments when the majority of the risk and costs is on the author (and their patrons) is just a little funny.
