Gender in Poison Mara's Game

Um, except I have, because I’m working on the game.

I’d like you to name these people, Mara, because I know I’m not one of them.

Well no problem NB out of game and that’s it. Still there will be people who twist but are normal people using magic… Two years of lore to the fucking garbage.

Sure. Consider yourself on your own from now on for having the indecency to throw a childish fit and deny representation when minorities give you actual, critical feedback on your work.

I will not be part of your project any longer.

I think there’s still some misunderstanding here. Irl, nonbinary is both a gender that people identitify as and an umbrella that other genders fall under. What you have seems to be the former. What role does the gender play in your game, even if there aren’t exactly the expectations that certain genders have in the real world?

There are several cultures irl that historically have a third or fourth gender, like I believe India, some Native American tribes (I don’t know which), and I think Hawaii and/or a region of Mexico that I can’t currently remember. There’s also evidence of two additional genders in ancient Jewish texts and some historians believe that ancient Greece (I think it was that, I could be remembering wrong though) might have had a third gender as well. While I’m not totally familiar with them, they all have more meaning than simply ‘not male and not female’. You would need to determine more clearly what your world’s third gender means exactly

Even with that nonbinary gender (which should probably be given a name since if there are three genders in that world, there can’t be a binary, it would be a trinary, as Hallofmirrors said), theoretically, there may be people in that world who may not fall under any of those genders even if there aren’t any characters like that in your game

However I agree with the others who have said that the magical transition during puberty wouldn’t be a good idea. If you wanted to keep it, I’d make it so that the characters could choose whether or not to do it and also how to do it

I asked and people said or nothing or is ok. Now suddenly I found I am doing things wrong I try to include everything possible add a non discrimination system. I ASKED FOR FEEDBACK SEVERAL TIMES GOD KNOWS I TRIED… But people of never give feedback or say simply is ok. I am not nb I don’t know how make things right alone But WHAT I COULD DO IF PEOPLE DON’T REPLY ME BACK OR ONLY SAY OK

@Poison_Mara

You don’t actually seem to be listening to what people are saying to you.

They’re saying that you’re using the term non-binary wrong. You have non-binary people telling you you’re using it wrong. It’s not the actual word you want to use.

I’d suggest since you seem to be really upset just now taking a break from the topic. No one is telling you to ditch your entire game. You did ask for feedback though and advice though.

I have people who I asked in a loungue private beta. The ask exists I asked tons of times and give link to people like @Lycoris

Yeah, not everyone has access to the lounge though. And you did ask in the Trans Discussion thread, and I think since you were looking for questions specifically about your game, it warranted its own thread.

Yes That’s why I am angry I only now a trans person in real life and She understands my idea. I asked here tons of time for help and now I have like you are doing all wrong … If People say me You should do X instead I will but no directly say I am x and I am not asking for help. There is nb in my world thereare Males Females and Morphos morphos could be gender fluid or not. Morphos usually are artist or spies but could be everything same as anyone.

Mages in puberty are like butterflies and emotional will and feelings made them or male or women or morpho

So I try to include everyone So I will asking again to nb people How do you think In a world were is magic and have multiple gender your identity should be included I will do adapt my world built to it

You worded the question as asking for the a pronoun for nonbinary people, when what you mean is a pronoun for a fictional third gender. That isn’t actual nonbinary represention, which is what we’re taking issue with. “Morpho” isn’t a gender people identify as (at least not to my knowledge), and you should stop referring to it as “nonbinary” when, while it is technically outside of our gender binary, what you’re doing is just adding a gender to your lore, changing the system from binary to trinary, as @hallofmirrors said previously.

You need to reconsider your definition of what “nonbinary” is.

We’ve told you that we think the best way to include all nonbinary people equally is to just let us use our own pronouns, and if you want to portray a world where nonbinary people are actually equal to binary people, you should have it be a non-issue within the lore. It shouldn’t matter what pronouns you use.

The way you’ve described it, it sounds like there’s a third gender that’s accepted, and then people who use pronouns outside of that will have NPCs react in various ways, with the implication that that makes nontrinary (as it would be in your world) genders differently treated from your trinary genders.

I think, to make your portrayal of nonbinary people respectful, you should not include “morphos”. We aren’t fictional, we don’t use that term, and including it reinforces the idea that nonbinary people are “mythical” or fake, and only should be in fake universes that aren’t reality. We are real, and we do exist, and instead of fictionalizing our identities you should include us as we are. The same goes for having your own pronoun instead of respecting ours. We already know what we like to be called, and while you might prefer to make something up for your own game, it’s very disrespectful. Like “morpho,” it just continues to have you fictionalizing our identities and makes us seem made up instead of respecting us as actual people.

Most games include binary options, and then a catch-all nonbinary option (with pronoun choice), and that’s what I would recommend. Trying to individually include all genders would be time consuming, impractical, and you’d still miss some genders. Just let us be not male, not female, and decide how we’re called.

So better no kind of difference between gender and just a pronoun swapping? I have different text for male and females also I have already say I don’t feel my gender assigned at birth I also have choose dress neutral clothing or typical from other gender. I should erase those or let the neutral clothing and that.

I’d say keep morphos in! They’re an interesting lore idea for your world, which could be written about in several great and interesting ways, but present them as being a local, historical third gender originating on your planet, distinct to the non-binary spectrum as we know it here, which is perhaps inherited from Earth/other planets/other human-dwarf-elf cultures, and later integrated with the planet’s people as a whole.

Add in, along with it, a non-binary option, and the option to choose, type in, pick, etc. your pronouns.

Most people here seem to have a problem with the whole puberty-change-shape thing in regards to physically transitioning. Remove that. Perhaps replace that with a generic character builder, such as hair length, eyes, etc.

As silly as it might seem, a quick fix would just to tag on “child” to the usual “son/daughter/boy/girl” questions used to introduce the main character as a child (I’m thinking the “baby/adoption/signing papers/etc. scenes”?), where you could mark down your gender along with your names.

A choice of clothing should hardly matter in the future, but if you have standard clothing for male and female characters, just make all of the options available to a non-binary individual when they choose what to wear, and tack on appropriate comments eg. “Very stylish suit, Mx.”, “It’s a beautiful lace gown, Ser.”, etc.

Oh I could do that… In the beginning I started as binary because I was not sure about coding multiple gender identities. I could make morpho as a totally different gender identity. In a world with elves and trolls. Like Zeniths are In heroes Rise.

clothing you could have variety in normal life except in a very few occasions and you could react to those clothing.

Also No one would react to your pronouns. Morphos would be a choice different from Nb

So you could be a
Boy
Nb.
Female
Morpho

Exactly! There’s no reason for you to throw out your lore entirely, just adapt it.

Morphos could be an entirely different gender that comes from your planet as part of its history, and has its own clothing standards and gender roles, which may or may not be broken.

“Women are supposed to be demure and quiet and wear skirts!”
“Morphos are supposed to be sly and clever and wear black!”
“Non-binary people are supposed to be androgynous and bisexual and into social justice!”

But make sure you separate morphos from non-binary people as a whole. They’re either their own, third gender, like women or men, or they’re a specific, traditional subgroup of non-binary (like two-spirit or androgyne here in real life).

Yup! Exactly!

Sorry if I’m stopping anyone else from speaking! I’ll bow out for now, I don’t want to steal the spotlight!

Ok. I think I get it that’s the feedback I was asking for weeks lol. I was no sure that’s what I asked.

I could change that easily. I just have to be careful about not trigger the special gender text flavor for nb.

I have decided after several consulting Thanks special to @Lycoris To so define the genders in my game as a Trinary system and offers a non trinary choice that could include the umbrella terms .

So if someone has something to say about it I would deal about the concerns.

So I was Researching And this are The Pronouns I have found. But some places say some are not good so I am totally confused…

So I am willing to use all or more I have no problem… But If one is bad I want to know about to don’t use it and insult someone. This is what I got
1-Ne/nim/ner
2-Ve/ver/vis
3-Spivak system
4-Ey/em/eir
5-Ze/hir/hirs And variants like Ze/zir
6-Xe/Xem/Xir/xirs
7-Sklee Futurama pronouns that are too weird to use.
All the searching has been really beneficial for me and I also discovered that I share certain terms with queer comunity I didn’t know until now. I am demisexual and probably Demiromantic. Even I could be attract to a man but I won’t have physical desire of intimacy even stuff like touch or hugging until I have a great trust or bond.

Do you mean for like NPCs and background characters, or as options for the MC to pick? You have quite a selection here, but I’d still recommend letting players input their own pronouns, just to be safe. Also, you ought to include they/them in the list–it’s a really common one, and a lot of people use it.

I think most of those pronouns look good–I haven’t personally seen anyone use the first two, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything. I would definitely not use the ones from Futurama though–it’s a good show and I love it, but the pronouns there weren’t really for actual nb people, it was more of a joke about an alien.
