I’m currently getting this error whenever I try to run any of my projects. Any idea how to fix this? I can still edit just fine, but I can’t play anything. When I hover over the white box, the text says, “It may have been moved or deleted.” Version 1.3.1.
Hmm, my guess would that your installation has been corrupted somehow, or some user permissions have changed (so it can’t access files).
Can you also check if the following file exists?
/Users/{you}/Library/Application Support/CSIDE/Default/cside-errors.txt
And let me know about the latest entry, if it does.
If there isn’t, my first recommendation would be a fresh installation of CSIDE.
EDIT: Okay, so I force closed the app and opened it again, and now it works. Not sure why that fixed it, but I’ll take it.
I get this bug quite often if I have left CSIDE open for a long time without using it, then come back and try to run a game. I can edit files just fine and closing and reopening fixes it
@Sinnie @trevers17
If either of wouldn’t mind checking the error file I linked above (it’s in APPDATA on Windows, rather than Application Support) when it happens again, that might help me track down the cause.
Edit: also, how long is long Sinnie? I’d like to try and reproduce this.
So I’ve had it open all evening and come back and click ‘run’ a few times - just now it has thrown the error.
‘Long’ was about 8 hours in this case. Think I tried running it twice before and it worked OK (say 4 hours ago was the last time) .
But the file you have pointed to doesn’t seem to exist. I have navigated to CSIDE in the APPDATA folder and there doesn’t seem to be an error log in any of the sub folders.
Just gone to the location where it is installed and I have a debug file:

Hmm. I’m not sure I’ve got the computer nous to help figure out what’s going on, CJW, but CSIDE isn’t working for me – it opens to a blank window – and a reinstall doesn’t fix it. Nor can I find the errors file you linked to…
Edit: here’s what pops up when I open CSIDE. Can’t do anything else with it (edit or read files) – need to use Task Manager to close it. Same after deleting and reinstalling it.
Maybe it’s an issue with my laptop, which is old, but because something similar seems to have cropped up for others too, I thought I’d share…
Sorry to hear you’re having trouble @Havenstone, but thank you for bringing this to my attention. It sounds like something is wrong with the provided download version.
I would suggest manually patching your CSIDE version as below (on Windows):
- Install CSIDE
- Download https://choicescriptide.github.io/downloads/updates/targets/131.zip (do NOT unzip it)
- Rename 131.zip to “package.nw”, Windows might warn you about extension changing/stability, confirm/OK this
- Replace the “package.nw” file in the installation directory with the one you’ve just renamed 131.zip too (you could back it up, but seeing as it isn’t working anyway…)
- Launch the app
You should now be on v1.3.1, which definitely works.
Troubleshooting:
- Ensure it is package.nw not package.zip.nw
- Ensure you didn’t unzip the download
Please let me know if the above doesn’t resolve your issues.
Thanks, CJW. I’m afraid I’m failing to figure out how to alter it to be a NW rather than ZIP file type – when I use Windows to rename it, it always ends up as “package.nw.zip” despite my best efforts. Any advice?
Not sure if you have tried this, but it looked like it has worked for me. Open up file explorer and go to view, then tick ‘file name extensions’
You should then see the .zip in the file name:
When you rename, you should be able to overwrite the .zip and replace with .nw. Hitting enter will give you this dialog box, hit yes.
As @Sinnie suggests is best.
Alternatively you can open binary files in text editors (e.g. notepad++), it’ll just appear as nonsense, and rename them/save them as something else from there.
Right, thanks! Having done that, CSIDE opened with the following error message:
And thereafter the same screen I showed above.
I think we’ll have to take this to PMs. Can you kick us off by letting me know your computer specs and operating system version?
@Havenstone
One additional thing to try:
- Close CSIDE
- Delete the folder:
C:\Users\{YourUsername}\AppData\Local\CSIDE\User Data
This will clear any persistent/user data that might be tripping the application up.
Welp, on the nth reinstall and restart of the computer, it started working again. So not quite sure what made the difference, but I’m back in my playtest. Thanks for the advice and help, all.
It looks like I am having a similar issue with CSide like another user when switching between latest and stable update channel.
I’ve PMed you.
Is there a known issue with CSIDE’s Quicktest not liking multi-replace…? Quicktest had me paranoid that I messed up my multi-replace:
this is line 125 in my chapter2 file:
"@{pronoun He's|She's|They're} losin' it."
same error for line 145, which has this multi-replace in it:
"What don't I have to worry about? The @{kab chick|dude} that
however, I have multi-replace in this exact format in the chapter1 file as well and there are no errors for any of them. just when i was getting ready to tear my hair out, i ran Randomtest and it never detected any issues with those lines, or any other multi-replace tags anywhere. which makes sense because those lines have remained unchanged in my demo and have never been an issue for myself or readers.
not the end of the world since it’s apparenty not an actual error! but i figured i’d ask since i can’t seem to find anyone else mentioning this issue?
@hotmess.exe – This, I believe is an undocumented issue of Quicktest. Multireplace can not be created in startup with a value of 0. Try creating it with a value of 1 and rerunning Quicktest.
Not that I’m aware of: there’s nothing special about CSIDE’s version of QuickTest. At worst it may get a little out of date, but I don’t recall ever seeing such a bug.
As Eiwynn notes QuickTest will “cheat” and will often throw errors about situations that can’t ever really happen. That’s probably what’s going on here. It’s a pain, but you’ll have to rewrite your code in a way QuickTest likes.
