COGDemos bugs/requests

I played one of the games yesterday and there were no problems. I made a bunch of saves, even saves right after checking the stats menu which was a problem in dashingdon. They loaded all fine. So far no bugs and nothing wrong for me.
I’ll continue to test these couple of days and let you know how it goes.

Oh, the game I tested was so good, I just have to mention it - Weeping gods. Everyone should try it

Hello @EvilChani
İn CoGDemos somethink happened to saves. Now it’s not accessible for the blinds.

I don’t know if it’s intended or a bug, but when a game is updated there’s a message: The game has updated. Restarting chapter. But it’s restarting the whole game, not the chapter you’re playing.
And all of your saves don’t work anymore. Quite frustrating if you’re playing a later chapter of a long game.

I suspect that it has something to do with the writers adding new variables to their coding in a WIP. If there’s no new variables added then the game works just fine

I hope you’re right and it’s not a bug. But we can ask the author

@jcollins , I was playing your game on the test site the other day and it got updated so I had to start from the beginning. I was on chapter 3 when it happened. Did you add new variables?

Ah, yes, sorry for that! I hoped no one was playing at the time. I updated the game to the same version as the one on the normal server. It added lots of new variables and achievements too and another chapter. I’ve been testing it yesterday to see if I get any errors regarding those because this was a problem in the previous server build, but everything seems fine.

It definitely broke the saves though.

No problem. I’m happy it’s not a bug, @EvilChani has enough on her plate  And the restart made me pick other options and I found so many interesting things and paths in chapter one.

I really love your game and I’m happy I found it just after you uploaded chapter 4. The humor is so my cup of tea, the story is interesting and I’m head over hills for Qenna. I finished a noble playthrough and now I started a run with the thief background. I love how it’s so different and yet it’s the same story.

Would love a clarification on this. I believe in dashingdon loading a save took to the start of the chapter of the game was updated, but on COGDemos I have always noticed it taking me to the start of the game. Is this a bug or different cases?

I believe it’s an intentional result of the system not knowing what the update changed. The “restarting chapter” message comes probably from ChoiceScript itself.

Hmm, hope it can be patched if possible. Makes it annoying for long WIPs, playing from start of chapter is much simpler than start of game

I could be wrong of course. Does it still return to the beginning if you load the save again after it has refreshed the page?

(@EvilChani I actually have some thoughts on the versioning, I could give it a try with the GH code and see if I’ll manage to do something.)

Yeah, I’m finding it hard to start any game right now, knowing there’s a good chance that a future update will break my saves and I’ll have to start all over again ( CT:OS, Infamous, Scapegoated…and all the long WIPs i am grateful for, add to that having multiple MCs :smiling_face_with_tear: ).

If this is what it takes, please, yes.

Also, i don’t know if it’s possible, could exported saves be named after the IF’s title ( a little like with twine SG IFs ) ? At the moment they are all named “save-number.cogdemos”, and after some time it makes it hard to know which one is from which game.

You can rename it yourself after you export them, that’s what I do. No way I’ll remember from what game save-random number was in a few weeks.

I’m not an author on this platform but I would tend to agree with at least submitting a poll.

It’s quite difficult for me to justify finding the time to read through updates for longer WIPs, with even small scale updates threatening to unwillingly wipe out a few hours of progress.

I imagine at least a couple other readers are in a similar boat, which could prove harmful to engagement and bughunting efforts in the long term. I’m aware it’s unlikely to happen in this manner, but imagine trying to beta test a 500k+ word IF with saves wiping every time a spelling/grammatical error is fixed.

Only the games have darkmode. I think I can set up darkmode on the regular site, though. Like you, I tend to use darkmode everywhere. Bright white backgrounds blind me to death. I will add it to the list.

@lo6otia Thanks for testing. And yes, Weeping Gods is awesome. I haven’t had a chance to play the latest update, but I love the game!

Nothing has changed, so I’m not sure what’s going on. Maybe when I pull the latest update, it will right itself again. Are you using a specific browser?

For everyone who has complaints about the saves not working with code changes…

Loading the save after the game “restarts” should work, provided the save is compatible. It worked for me in testing.

The reason the dev set it up this way is because he had trouble getting startup.txt to load without restarting the entire game. In case anyone is not aware, startup.txt is what loads all the variables and achievements. So, basically, he is forcing it to load by restarting the game. Once it loads, compatible saves should work.

That said…

I will DM you a link to the repo. Getting versioning working would be great. It is on the list, but that’s a dev thing, not a me thing, so getting to it will take a while.

If you could get it working, that’d be great. I don’t mind sharing the repo right now with a select group of people. I just don’t want too many hands in the code right now because if it breaks, it gives the dev headaches and he doesn’t really want to troubleshoot other people’s code changes. Plus, getting him to troubleshoot it costs me more money, and this project has NOT been cheap and I’m still paying to have more functionality added.

I’m sorry if it’s not working the way everyone wants yet. I’m doing what I can, and so is the dev. He’s even brought a friend in to help with some of the front end stuff that neither he nor I had working right (hence the latest code change).

Just FYI… He just sent another update that verifies email addresses in preparation for integrating with Patreon–once I test that, I’ll merge it and upload, provided it’s not causing trouble (which it should not).

Having trouble seeing images on mobile. Blue question mark appears and clearing cache/cookies isn’t working. Any fixes to this?

Hello @EvilChani
My phone is Iphone and I just use Safari.

I haven’t seen this issue elsewhere. It sounds like a connection issue. Typically, if you’re seeing question marks instead of images, there could be a number of things causing it: your connection is either too slow to load them, the images themselves are too large (I recently upped the allowed image size to 8MB), a browser extension is blocking them, your browser is outdated, your ISP could be at fault… the list goes on and on.

Is anyone else seeing this? Is it for every game or certain games?

@LeannaMandragoran Thank you. I talked to the dev about the screen reader not working and he said nothing has been changed to affect it. I’ll see if I can reproduce the problem.

Also…

In a short while, I will be pulling the update that includes email verification. Authors may receive a message to verify their email address before uploading another game. Users will eventually receive the same thing. This is a necessary step to getting Patreon integrated with the site.

In addition, I have received a complaint from mailtrap informing me that bots are using the webform to create logins.

I freaking loathe captcha, but if requiring email verification doesn’t help the problem, I may have to implement captcha. I’m not sure how to do that, to be honest, and I would rather walk over hot coals than to use those godforsaken “choose all the pictures with a light” checks. I know there are better ones, but I still don’t like them because you have to sign in again after the system logs you out, which means another freaking captcha (you have no idea how much I hate them).

So if anyone can think of a better way to block form bots, let me know.

The site may be down for a minute-ish when I update it. I will wait until later tonight and post a message when I’m done.

Edit: I also mentioned versioning to the dev. If no one figures out how to do it before the Patreon integration is over, he will start working on it then.

The code has been updated now.

The next time you log in, you will be asked to verify your email address.

You’ll get an email to the email address you signed up with from admin@cogdemos.ink. Just click the link to verify and you’re good to go.

You shouldn’t have to do this more than once, unless you change your password, in which case you’ll go through it again.

Maybe it’s just my tablet, but is anyone else having trouble with this? I cleared the cache on my browser and deleted a bunch of saves from other games yet it keeps telling me, “Save Failed: Storage is full. Please delete older saves or free up space before trying again.” :frowning:
