So far I like the amount of personal stats you’ve coded – 5, I think, is a fine number to work with. @kckolbe’s made good suggestions; however, on the Knowledge/Intuition stat, I see what you were trying to do originally.

Whether or not you plan to track Knowledge as a separate skill (as suggested), what about renaming the slider to Booksmart/Intuitive? I think that’ll achieve what you intended.

1/31/2021 Progress Note

How is it the end of January already?? :thinking:

  1. I finally learned how to use the “hide_reuse” button, which is immensely satisfying.
  2. Chapter 3 is halfway done!
  3. Coding stats is more fun than I thought (when it works, at least!) :laughing:

  1. Chapter 3 - Warning Shots is completed!
  2. Revamped the stats after feedback!
  3. There’s a save system now (I hope it works lol)!
  4. Expanded info about the romance options (with character portraits!!!) now available in the first comment of this forum post (click on each name for more info)!

What were you THINKING?! I’m just kidding, love the changes. Some minor suggestions:

Reward the player for paying attention on the compressions, +1% medical knowledge for getting that right.

Between the decision to give up on the patient and calling time of death, was kind of expecting an “Emotional/Detached” opposed pair. Not required, just a thought that seems to fit the choices.

“Throwing yourself into your work” costs you 20 mental health (compared to 0 for talking to friends and mentors), but results in no med skill or reputation increase.


I chose female for Eli, but after the protestor scene, it says “You see Eli begin to worry at his satchel strap again”

So I don’t know if it’s intentional or not, but in the new update offering to share food doesn’t increase Eli’s relationship point by 1, which misses several events, such as the window talk doesn’t occur and there is no way to attain the requirement eli > 1 in the playthrough

The food-sharing options don’t actually affect Eli’s relationship stat (it’s the window choice that determines whether the relationship goes to 1 or stays at 0). I just did a playthrough where I didn’t share food, and the window choice still appears. Can you DM me where you ran into the issue?

Hi! So I just got around to playing this, and I have a few suggestions that I’m not sure if you’re aware of. However, I really did enjoy the game, and I’m really excited to see where it goes from here.

Coding-Wise
  • Let me preface this by saying if anything coding-wise sounds too complex, please DM me, I’d be happy to help.
  • You don’t need a new demo for every new update. Just reload the files onto the same place in the old demo, and they’ll show up.
  • Split your chapters up into different scene files. It’s going to get very difficult for you to write your entire story in just your startup file.
  • Instead of setting your patients to +1 in the beginning, you can just create a text variable named beginningPatient or something, and then set the patient’s name to whichever name it is. If you really like numbers, you can even make it a numerical variable that changes based on the patient; 1 for colton, ect. ect. It helps clean up the code.
  • I’d put the glossary, relationships, and personal stats all on different screens in the stats screen.
Content
  • I LOVE the inclusion of a mental health stat. It’s perfect for a doctor game.
  • [I ]Oh[/ I], okay. → is a typo, you probably need to have the I’s be lowercase, although I’m not quite sure if that’s the issue.
  • It’s weird having only one of the conversation questions be hide_reuse and the rest be disable_reuse. Also, maybe having a different line other than the fidget cube one for the conversation, because if my roommate repeats that they want a fidget cube several times, I might just check them into the hospital myself.
  • Also, the comforting Eli thing happens after I finished the conversation I can’t see what’s wrong in the code, but I’m sure something is.
  • Also in the Alex conversation, he introduces himself every time, something that’s really weird. Just have the *goto command without a page_break and put the label right before the *choice option
  • I appreciate that the stats influence the outcome of the conversation, makes me feel like the choices have meaning.
  • All in all, I’m really enjoying the game. It’s well written and well paced and reminds me a touch of open heart. Also, I’m a huge sucker for the roommate romances and Eli already has my heart. Quick tip for your Tumblr asks, letting people ask on Anon might prompt more involvement since most people I get asks from go on anon before sending them.

End of Chapter 3, this should increase loyalty

Also, all the stat checks seem to check if something is greater or less than {insert number, usually 50} which is usually fine but will crash the game if a stat is at 50 (or whatever number), so you should probably change it so one result is >= or <=. Another solution is to have the “good”/higher result be an if stat > x, and the other result be an else.

Enjoying the story so far, very curious bout this Dr. Grey. Both as a RO (ofc) and for his part in a certain plotpoint.

Also, did you create the new character portraits with Artbreeder? I think I recognize the style from my own experimentations with it for art inspo.
