As many of you know, I’ve been associated with the IF zine ChoiceBeat for over two years, as a reviewer (mostly of ChoiceScript games), interviewer (of ChoiceScript authors), and copyeditor. Recently, we were mentioned in the August 2024 issue of the French gaming magazine Canard PC.
Here’s our creator and editor, Andi Hagen, talking about how he was inspired to create ChoiceBeat when he observed that it was easy to find fansites dedicated to visual novels or text adventures, but nothing that focused on interactive fiction in all its forms.
I don’t have access to the magazine so I skipped a sentence.
“Andi Hagen, had the idea after playing games like Suzerain (note: I love that game!), 80 Days, and Citizen Sleeper.
‘No publication seemed dedicated to this category of games,’ he told the magazine. ‘The world of interactive fiction is very fragmented. I found websites dedicated to Japanese visual novels and text adventure games, but no one showed any interest in interactive fiction, visual novels and narrative games. I created ChoiceBeat to fill this gap.’
Inspired by the punk spirit and the chaotic humor of British magazines from the 1980s, the issues of ChoiceBeat align/span forty pages[…].”
