Choice of Rebels Part 1 WIP thread

tfw team instinct :sob::joy::sob:

I love how mara makes a good point. Like, no one else is playing a purely helots hating noble here except her. Everyone else seems to be playing an obligated to help noble or a sympathetic noble. God bless, mara. You show us the way.

Slight bug: If you go to pick up the phials from the Theurge (when you are a theurge), and hit the third choice, it gives this error:

chirex line 4191: None-existent variable ‘realtruth’

Okay got it dont touch the phials for this playthrough. Can’t wait to let my deputy take care of all that numbers. shudders

Wait… that is "Bandit line 4376 … that means they have over 4,000 cheeky and cheesy lines available to choose from every robbery?

Mind-numbing programming from @Havenstone.

They expected no more tokens and found, what?

The literary brilliance.

Tried letting zvad lead.
Lost 11 adults and had 8000 wealth

Compared to when I was micro managing.
All my people died and I was broke

In chapter four Zvad left the band but he still showed up in a few places, like when buying a couple of spies. I’ve forgotten the others though.

When all the sabatoge and spying were done before the battle, we were expecting all the alastors to leave and around 40 to decide to join us. Most of them were clearly scared off by 200ish notoriety.

I like how you’ve adjusted the Theurge attacks. Adding the extra description makes having mules for the sick less like a tax on your follower/sick size and more like a part of the balancing act of surviving.

You’ll probably lose more people when I sort it out properly, but you shouldn’t crash the band.

Oh thank god, the numbers are gone! I’ll be having mules-related nightmares for a while yet, but it is an undeniable relief. The spreadsheet hell is good a experience for the first play, but I really appreciate having a speedier option for repeated plays.

I do hope you manage to balance the regular gameplay enough to make it noob-friendly, since that pressure it creates is lost in the story mode. But at least with the story mode I can let myself appreciate the emotionally-stressing winter events without the emotionally-stressing math.
As for deputy advice, a ballpark figure for weapons/people you need for successful raids would be very helpful.

As for the Ch.4 content, my favorite part so far was the unwritten section. I just dearly love picturing Breden flatly asking “Why” and then going “yeah ok” followed by a ceremony conducted entirely in monotone. Romance!
…Well, I suppose the actual written parts were good too. I like how the relationship you have with the various factions comes into play, especially since it seems relevant to the possible strategies. It really helps making the situation feel more grounded, dispelling the illusion that the world revolves around you entirely.

So, I played with a female Aristocrat with high Charisma and low Combat. I let Zvad manage everything.

And it was pretty nice. Having little event every week like the raid of the tithe barn and the noble houses was pretty fun, and it didn’t feel like the story was lacking. If anything, it proved as useful and well made.

I ran into this bug, though. At the beginning of week 5.

Same for me here and wow, Breden and Zvad are so much better at managing those damned mules than I am, guess my character is more of a “big picture” kind of guy.
Since we now have more raids to go on I was kind of hoping my budding theurge could test his theory on whether using the blood of living volunteer, possibly intermingled with his own would be both possible and beneficial, or not.

My sentiments exactly.

Stupids helots I swear I try @Havenstone but i skip the damn thing after first week. DAMN ZAPDOS!!! HE MANAGED TO KILL 10 MEN CAUSE 10 ANARCHY AND HURT ANOTHER FIVE. HE INUTILIZED 1/3 Of my guys. And cause more anarchy than Evil Gandhi in all her live. Maybe the management is great for all that big Armies and anachy lovers. But for a tiny PEACEFUL gang is impossible all of them are ASSASSINS That try to kill everyone and cause Havoc. I will try later to see how many time Zapdos need to kill all my men! I hate helots.

Pfft, I can just picture Zvad and Breden running around, giddily tossing men into pits of spikes and laughing manically. Clearly Evil Ghandi’s presence has twisted them beyond saving.

I suppose that if you have a very small band, passing off all the decision to someone else doesn’t look good.
(“Alright boss, we have 12 packets of food, how should it be shared among our 24 rebels?” “Dammit, how do you expect me to handle all those numbers?!”)

That reminds me, I was asking myself how the new people coming in will effect the rest of the band? So far we had a fairly cohesive band of helots, but now that new demographics may be coming in the potential for internal conflicts raises. Will newcomers have the same confidence in you and your chosen deputy as the helots that’s been with you from the start, I wonder?

Are you saying the legendary bird of lightning descended from the heavens to personally electrocute ten of your rebels?

Because that would be a glorious twist.

disturb not the harmony of fire (breden), ice (mara) or lightning (radmar)

lest these titans wreak destruction upon the world in which they clash

though the water’s great guardian (haven) shall arise to quell the fighting

alone its song will fail, thus the world shall turn to ash

I wish they were zapdos moltres and articuno. Legendary birds are pretty intelligent and not helots. And they don’t need mules. And i am sure if I explained all the 3 BIRDIES I DON’T WANT HAVOC OR RAIDS BE PEACEFUL. They don’t cause 10 anarchy and kill 10 men!!!

My two cents about the new version of chapter 2:

I’m not sure whether this was your intention, @Havenstone, but now I actually WANT to handle all the numbers. My reasons for that are numerous.
I just don’t trust my deputy with these things.
I don’t want ANYONE to die on my watch.
And I want to earn a reputation that will cause the mother to name her child after me, even though it doesn’t even matter because I send all children off to be fostered elsewhere.

I know that sounds dumb, but well… it’s back to the mule trains for me.

I don’t have much of an opinion about chapter 4 yet, since it is way too short. At least in my playthrough. My choices cause me to miss ALL the interesting bits (I took a quick peak at the code, so I know what could have happened): No one unexpected shows up or gets mentioned, nobody dies, everyone just grumbles and gets on with life.

The change from the only mule path was alot better;

I really do love that we are given a choice to either be a workaholic (mules) or just like taking part in major decisions. Im amongst the group that couldnt stand the mule calculations etc so this was a real nice plus

Of course, this also means we cant get ALL the glory since we are relying on our key people, however if there is a way to get it done without too many casualties, being a theurge practitioner id like to know!

The part during the major decisions cant really be helped if we rely on our key members unless we proclaim ourselves eclect since a majority of the helotry we have are devout, breden is useful but my goodness its difficult to accept he has so much sway over our followers, in my playthrough i use him alot to diffuse charisma related quests which is kinda ALOT

i wonder if there are any other benefits to keeping horion and linos around (against their will) in the camp? or is there anyway to AVOID them to end up looking like a pin cushion without keeping them hostage? >.<

Im trying to go for a major wisard, compassionate and hopefuly wise Noble, During my playthroughs charisma is still if not on par with theurgy in terms of getting things done or making a point if not a little more since the fact i can do theurgy doesnt seem to give my followers more confidence in my leadership unless you got a silver tongue (at least thats how i percieve it)

I suppose we cant have both, since it really adds to the severity of your choices as a rebel leader.

Ah, it’s good. I like the idea of leading a rebellion. I saw it much earlier but decided to comment on it just now.

One thing bothers me though. The leader of a grand scale rebellion, can only be 1) a fighter 2) a talker 3) a scholar. Why can’t such an important person have more skills than just one? It’s sad.

P.S. What are the commonly used weapons in this game? I noticed Alastors with clubs, but are there swords? I love swords.
