Betovering House (WIP, Update NOT ON THE DEMO: March 13th 2019)

Thank you so much for the help with typos! I do reread everything I write a few times, but I’m a fairly fast reader and my eyes just tend to skip over stuff, so I really appreciate the help haha. All those should be fixed in the next update!

Not sure if this is a spoiler but there will definitely be more flashbacks. The MC’s past is as important as anyone else’s at Betovering, so I thought it was important to explore it.

As for your question about magic, I made an (incomplete) post about it on my tumblr blog here. There are a few things still missing from it, but it covers most of what witches can do. There’s a few more things in the lore tag if you want to check that out!

I checked it out, and wow, that’s a lot of interesting info! Is the MC an inherent witch by any chance? Or if we’re learning instead, do we get to choose our magic? Just curious! So many things people could do with that power :star_struck: I’ve now fallen into the trap of RO asks, and I think I’ve fallen a little harder for Ray now, ahhh. (I’m also learning all these things about Dodge and the other characters, and I love it!)

That’s how I get ya. I make you fall for the characters even more and then you have to stick around on my blog haha.

And this isn’t a spoiler, but no, the MC is not a witch. Witches are born, not made. No normal human or witchkin can ‘learn’ magic. A witch may choose learn magics that aren’t their inherent, but they still have to be born with the ability to access and control magic in the first place.

The MC is a witchkin, which means the closest thing they have to magic is the ability to create enchantments or wards. Even then they have to know the corresponding rune/sigil and be able to contact the Faelands, which is a skill few possess.

Glad to see you are continuing to work on this, it’s rare to see a game like this one where I like all the characters, and you’ve made all of them quite distinctive.

@exordice In the future, is there going to be a way to increase any of Dodge’s stats? I ask because I had my MC buy him a pastry, and she just got a big metaphoric middle finger for her kindness! :angry:

There will be many future opportunities to get closer to Dodge, yes! He’s a rather… difficult person to deal with, but once you break down the first wall, the others will eventually follow.

Also a minor spoiler but that interaction isn’t over yet! Choices you make won’t always have immediate repercussions, just like in real life. Let him have his time alone and he may or may not come to his senses about the whole thing.

Ok, thanks. Another thing that I noticed is that you have the MC rather… hostile, in their interactions with him too. Example, when we are reminding him what our name is. I think that’s kind of odd, especially since I’m kind of trying to have my character kind of be on the insecure/shy side, and those reactions so far seem to belong to a more self-confident character…

Well, the sincere!MC is not as hostile as the sarcastic one, for obvious reasons. They’re more chiding or reprimanding, as is their nature.

And the thing is, the MC can’t really be shy. They would not have been hired to do the job POMPAC intended for them to do otherwise, and Ray would not have let them take it for fear of causing them stress.

They can be insecure, certainly. In fact that’s a canon trait to a certain point. And I don’t think a person really needs self-confidence to want not to be treated badly. I’m not a confident person at all and I would still stick up for myself with Dodge.

If they were shy, they would get absolutely nowhere with Dodge. If they just rolled over and submitted to his insults and yelling, nothing would ever progress. He needs someone to call him out on what he’s doing, to make him think.

A good example of this is Urse. Whenever he shouts she just clams up and never fights back, and thus they don’t have much of a relationship at all. He barely thinks of her as existing, and she’s just afraid of him. A MC who was shy or timid (maybe not to her extent but not far off it) would just be viewed by Dodge as nothing to him.

I hope this makes sense!

I like your narrative voice a lot – the snarky commentary and the anxiety/panic are both really well done. I’m also very into all the characters? Which is super rare for me. I can definitely see replaying this with a variety of MCs, which is awesome.

A question about the personality stats: are they just tracking our choices, or do you plan to use them for checks or blocking out options further down the line? (Just curious, nbd either way!)

To answer your question, the personality stats are now effectively ‘locked in’. I might give one more chance to change charming/clumsy with social situations, but that’s it. However, they’re not used to lock the player out of specific options!

The personality you pick will determine how the MC responds when a certain option is picked. For example, if you chose to console someone, a sincere/charming MC will be empathetic and kind whilst a sarcastic/charming one will use jokes to make them feel better. Whereas a sincere/clumsy or sarcastic/clumsy one will have a harder time with it.

However, the chosen personality traits will not define whether or not you gain favour with the character. They will just appreciate the gesture, regardless. It’s more to give the MC an actual personality so I can write them more fluidly, and how they interact with each of the other characters.

Having said this, down the line there may be decisions you should make based on them. It’s not a ‘if you aren’t charming you can’t get through to them’ sort of situation though. There will always be an option for each personality trait, you just have to pick the one that aligns with the MC’s. And characters may comment if you act ‘OOC’ to them. If a sincere MC chooses to snark at someone, they may be surprised. Or if a stoic MC starts crying, they may not know what to do.

The only one that’s obviously not included in this is the flirtatious/flustered stat. That’s only applicable if you choose the flirt options for the ROs, and simply determines how the entire thing plays out. For example, Nina has a lot of fun teasing a flustered MC, and Dodge becomes easily embarrassed by a flirtatious one. That will all be determined later, when that sort of thing becomes applicable.

If you clicked on this excited for an update at last, then I’m really sorry to have to say there isn’t one yet. I have worked on the game, but nothing that would extend the demo beyond what it is, more future scenes and such.

The reason that I’ve been so busy and can’t update as much is because of my personal life. If you follow my tumblr, you will already know I am going through a lot right now. I don’t want to drag that stuff here, so if you want to know more of my situation, feel free to just skim the last couple of posts on my blog.

I just didn’t want the topic to close, and so I’m making everyone aware of my situation. It should be resolved fairly soon either way, so I can get back to having more time to work on the game.

Again, I’m very sorry for the fact I can’t update it yet. Thank you for all your interest so far, and I hope you’ll enjoy what comes next!
