Oh now I can see where both of you are coming from.I suppose I did overestimate the prestige of knighthood when compared to inheritable titles. And yeah in a sea of sharp tongued and quirky characters, Charlotte’s practicality gives her a unique charm.
Also agree with you about the wip , it’s brilliant and puts a different spin on the original.
I don’t mind that you said it, it’s part of creating a WIP. Yes, the wealth and income variables are more for decoration and historical or narrative immersion, since they’re the patrimony inherited through generations. Now that you mention it, I forgot to increase the money in the dragon route but that’s fine, I’ll do it later. But you’ll be able to spend money, buy things, invest, etc… So far it’s been very scripted regarding the stats, but in future chapters I’m going to give the player the option, although no, the player won’t be able to spend all their money.
Nicknames, now that’s a fun idea, I’ll see what I can do. I’m glad you liked the demo and that you feel it’s like Christmas with all the multiple Regency projects. Also, thanks for the link related to etiquette - it’ll be useful in the future. I didn’t know Charlotte was so famous - I assume it’s an effect from all the Austen media, rather than from the demo since she hasn’t had that much presence. But I don’t think I can make her an RO. In fact, I had planned to make ROs out of all the Bennet sisters, but I discarded that considering I couldn’t justify why a marquess would be interested in ladies whom their own father considers foolish. Besides, with how meticulous I like to be, and as the demo disclaimer says, Autumn Winds is seeking to be a moderately small project - adding many ROs could well be a headache in the future.
If we don’t pursue either of the Bennet sisters, will their romances continue normally as they did in the book? Or will we be able to meddle in some way and either help or hinder them?
I am perfectly happy with Georgiana and Caroline (though I would have also loved Charlotte at least for landowner if not Marquess) I just want to meddle in Darcy’s and Bingley’s love lives
Honestly now that you say it the romances in the original looked so clean cut so I am quite curious what would happen if I were to court one of the two Bennet sisters instead of their original suitors.Would I then have a love rivalry with the original suitors or something along those lines??
Yes, if you choose Georgiana or Caroline, the events of the novel will follow their course, so you can ruin Jane and Bingley’s relationship. Even depending on your intelligence and eloquence, you can prevent Darcy’s later attempts to fix things between Bingley and Jane, or you can encourage him. If you don’t choose Elizabeth early in the game, her arc with Darcy will continue as in the novel, but you won’t be able to alter it since this romance happens in situations where the MC wouldn’t be present. If you choose Jane, Bingley gets engaged to Georgiana. If you choose Elizabeth, Darcy continues with the arranged marriage to his cousin, despite Caroline’s attempts and desires.
No, Bingley would never dare to hate you, especially not in the gentry route, even more so if you’re his childhood friend or his childhood mentor. Darcy wouldn’t hate you either - he’d just be confused about his feelings or worried about your choice since he knows people will judge you, but that’s where some mechanics I’m planning for those routes come in. The only route that has some level or point of rivalry and a possible duel is Caroline’s, since she’s engaged in the demo, but it’s an engagement more out of family friendship than interest or a contract or something behind it.
Oh, I forgot about Wickham, yes… Better to leave that as a surprise for the player.
Love that you’re keeping Wickham a surprise as he was one of the more interesting characters I read about in the novel.
Also I gotta commend you, there are not many games where we are the heartthrob male lead instead of being the female shoujo-esque mc.
That is completely fair about limited ROs. If you listened to every readers’ whim and fancy then your list of ROs would eventually include everyone because there will be some random person who wants to romance that character…if you go down that road even Mrs Bennet and Lady de Bourgh would become ROs . Best just set your boundaries now with readers, and readers will accept it, e.g. romancing Charlotte isn’t a big deal breaker for me.
I’ve never read the book it’s based on before, but this game is interesting so far. Hopefully there isn’t too much that will go over my head without knowing the source material-
Feedback-
Firstly the accurate details and historical mentions in this WIP bring me such joy. The clothes especially really made you feel like you’re there. The ball was a highlight. You’re a very good writer. It’s wonderful.
Suggestions (feel free to ignore)-
- Mrs Bennet’s name. Martha is a very biblical puritanical name for the upper classes. But then again, maybe being an attorney’s daughter, it’s a way of showing her origins? Also I got Margaret and Martha mixed up as I read, so I’d suggest changing it.
You could try Marianne, Matilda or Catherine?
Some argue that Mrs Bennet is believed to be called Catherine, because of how nicknames worked. In Austen, most the nicknames are used occasionally, yet not for Kitty. So then its reasoned that everyone calls Kitty “Kitty” all the time, not her full name Catherine, as they use her nickname to distinguish her from her mother. People were named after relatives and then they just used nicknames.
-
If your MC is the Marquess of Leicestershire, then everyone would call him Lord Leicestershire, not his family surname. His closest friends like Mr Bingley would call him just by his title - without the Lord bit - “Leicestershire”, i.e. OR even a nickname based on it e.g. “Leicester” (Less-stir) or even “Les” (that’s if they haven’t invented a weird nickname for him!)
-
If MC is close with Mr Bingley, then the MC would always just call him “Bingley”.
-
Mrs Bennet would only call her husband Edward in private when no one else was there. Younger people might refer to their spouses and family members more by their first names to other people, but this is an old married couple.
I loved this! I had great fun playing with all the stats at 6.
I wasn’t quite sure what the first text input option meant – was that the character’s age?
Don’t worry, the game covers the same events as the original novel, so you won’t be lost, so to speak. Although playing the demo knowing the novel or after having read it, I think it will feel like a grandmother’s kiss after a good homemade meal she’s made for you on a summer afternoon.
Ok, I’m glad you liked the period mentions - I put a lot of effort into the clothing and descriptions to transport the player to the assembly, I think that’s my strongest point with the demo. The clothing part, at least the MC’s, was a hassle to write but I’m glad it bore fruit. Most likely I’ll change Mrs. Phillips’ name, since I like Mrs. Bennet’s. The point about how the marquess should be addressed is too perceptive on your part - it shows you know the era well. The rewrite would be a pain but I’ll see what I can do. I think Mrs. Bennet has only called her husband Edward in private and trusted settings, in the prologue with her sister whom she trusts a lot, then in Mr. Bennet’s study on repeated occasions, if I’m not mistaken. Also, I was aware that in public situations they wouldn’t call each other by their first names.
I’m glad the demo seemed like a fun experience to you. As for the input_text, the dialogue details it: ‘You are so engrossed in writing a letter to your estate manager that you fail to notice the clamor of the street below, or the orange sunlight streaming through the window to your left. At last, the tedious task is complete, and all that remains is to sign the letter. You begin with the name bestowed upon you by your parents.’ The name that your parents granted you - your name, then your surname, and then the window scene continues.
Hello @yamato1
I love the game. Lookslike a good adaptation. How ever character creation is not good or wel developed to mme. Not given any suggestion in some parts forsing us to type is not a good way for a character creations. We can steel decided to trpe our own but please give us suggestion choices.
Also this option
in this and the skill selection should probably be in English.
That said, I like how we can do whatever we wish with these stats! It’s a huge bonus in my point of view. Although it would be easier to navigate if the numbers were given as choice options, not textbox.
I’m glad you liked the demo, and I really didn’t think it was necessary to give example names for players, but I can see that’s another addition I need to make to the demo.
Although personally I think if you don’t like it that’s fine, but saying it’s not well developed is going too far, given that as far as I’ve tested it presents no bugs or failures and implements well with the dialogue using multireplace.
Yes, it’s the developer mode in my native language. I created it to test the game quickly without having to go attribute by attribute, skill by skill selecting the level I wanted. The option will be eliminated or modified so it makes sense in a Regency aspect. I’m also glad you like the roleplay freedom, since as a player of this genre I like the idea of building your character how you like within the game’s parameters.
Hello @yamato1
Thanks for answering. Wording is somewhat wrong I apologize for that I don’t mean any offense.
