Looks like you uploaded a Job Simulator Update in An Unexpectedly Green Journey
With strings, sealing wax and clackety clacks on the keyboard, I have (I hope) resolved the Royal Road errors. Now, you will be able to travel where the variable descriptions match your location and update properly.
Also, you will less frequently encounter the âno jobs hereâ message, although it will still appear as intended. However, since the jobs on the Royal Road do not return to the pool once you have taken them, eventually you will find the Royal Road lacks employment opportunities.
The tribal jobs always repeat, randomly, from the assigned pool of jobs.
In the New Shires, some jobs are infinitely repeatable, while others are one shot.
In Grandardgard, all jobs are one shot.
You would not be able to do every job in one orcâs lifetime. in the finished game, you will get old and have the urge to retire before this happens (unless you have embarked on one of the epic paths.
All of this has really highlighted the importance of testing and the importance of dedicated testers to see through and past the oversights of a scattered brain IF project
Indeed! A young orc has the compulsion to adventure. Mature orcs are less so, instead having a greater focus and understanding of life- meaning loot and grub. The jobs route also allows the player to pick up more lower-level lore about the world, while occasionally getting to do more exciting tasks above the everyday.
However, if your orc has disdain for the work of common folks, he can always join the Adventurers Guild or fight in the arena. Or just languish in the tribe, doing the everyday duties and going on raids.
EDIT:
As it stands, I realise that most players are likely to either become war chiefs or shamans, rather than a more mundane orc. Yet, the option is now there for an orc to fill their life with adventures great and small into their older age.
Next, Iâll be moving on to the shaman path, which will separate from the mature orc path, life the warchied path. I am still not resolved if a general (non-shaman) city builder path would be a separate branch from the mature orc path, allowing you to come back and do mature orc events or a self-contained path. Perhaps I might make the early stages part of the mature orc path, but then close off the late stage to players who choose to rule the city. Need to think about this. I do not want to overcomplicate things now. The game is truly huge, though will simplify regain for those who managed to reach old age.
Some teething problems, but think I got them sorted out now.
Enjoy the brew!
Hi. I was playing my first play when I encountered a bug at the scene when the chief and shaman wake us up
I was really enjoying the game when it blowed in my face like this
Edit:
I played again without any save loading it solved. But it would be good to check it anyway
It seems to be fine.
Since I have updated throughout the day and added a load of new variables, it might just be a lag with updates on the server side.
@Ferry
Perhaps it was using an old save?
I am not sure exactly how the saves work on DashingDon, they seem to be pretty stable, unless I change the type of a variable (like from a number to an alphabet string or a true/false statement.)
Please let me know if this happens again.
Thanks for playing and glad you enjoyed this. I fear, on update days, there will always be some errors cropping up but it is very important to iron them all out.
Cheers!
EDIT: Just to be safe, Iâll upload the save and variable files again. If it is a persistent error to do with incorrect variable names it should crop up on quick and random tests, which it doesnât, so I think it is ok now.
In a way I find the lack of choice for the next protagonist race reassuring. A great strength of An unexpectedly Green Journey tone-wise and narrative wise is that it seemed to be focused on what it wanted to do and not do.
A trap a lot of games fall into is trying to offer a bit of everything or to make it so nothing get closed off by the player decision, which in my opinion dilute the story and make the choices feel inconsequential.
Anyway what I wanted to say is that your game answered perfectly to one of my pet peeve towards games in general and Iâm interested in your future projects
been a while since I could sit down and actually play this, and yup, still a great experience
Donât think so because I was playing for first time and it was still the beginning of story.
It doesnât happen again and I played till the 61 years and the start of cyclops but I slept and my phone shuted down because of lacking power and the game restarted. Now I should play the whole chief story again and I donât feel like it for now.
So I liked the game but couldnât finish my playthrough.
I have to ask how can I get the dragon? I just got a scale.
Hi Laurence, thanks for playing and commenting.
With this game, you certainly get to have a, unashamedly, deep dive as an orc. If you want to be an orc, dive in! If you donât want to be an orc, play it and get them killed!
Of course, you can forge your orc to your liking, but it will never be an elf. You want to see things like an elf, think of things like an elf or do things like an elf. It is, I hope, a fun and rewarding role-playing experience.
As for the follow-up, it is for the exact reason you stated that I would limit the starting race, albeit with a concession to allowing the player to have a degree of non-human heritage which can handled with variables but not fundamentally change the 'voice; of the character.
Some can manage a far broader sweep of voices and have the ability to make a game where you can ultra-customise the main character. This is the ideal, but it is very hard to make everything meaningful- however, there is nothing wrong with cosmetic changes, like hair and eye colour, if it satisfies the player.
Much comes down to what we want in roleplaying- do we want to be playing ourselves, albeit a customised version, in another world or situation or do we want to become the driving force behind someone/thing else? Neither answer is right or wrong. Whichever approach, the important thing is to make choices seem consequential, to a greater or lesser extent.
I have been inspired by old-school gamebooks, so cutting off sections just seemed like a natural way to me, as long as it is based on the playerâs previous choices and not arbitrary. I would like to think that if someone purchased this game they would play it through more than once.
Thanks for the insight.
@coal8
Glad to have you back in the orc life and I appreciate the continued support!
Did the computer shut down delete your DashingDon saves?
Blame Krog
I am glad you stuck with it and got so far. You reached the apocalypse and the worldâs fate hangs in the balanceâŚ
To get the dragon to join your forces during the very final battle, you must have taken a non-military-focused path when building your kingdom, so choose the option to focus on culture or diplomacy.
This will leave you with a weaker army but open up the kingdom visitor choices, where one of the options, eventually, will be to receive a bedraggled blond lady. If you can please her, she will give you a dragon scale and hold your kindness in her heart.
Your kindness will be rewarded when you most need it.
Cheers to all of you!
Krog works in mysterious ways
sips grog
Ohh so the dragon will come later I asked because I thought at that visit the queen will give me one of her eggs but it looks like I was at the correct path.
No it didnât delete but my last save was after the civil war for chiefdom. There isnât much room for saves and I should have save when it really changes the path like how I will rule.
Hello, what does the shaman and city paths consist when it is finally updated. Because there might be some ideas I want to try
Things may change as it develops, but your orc will decide what to build and who you hire for your city. This will take place in 3-year cycles, when after every 3 years you can see the results of your policies and buildings on the city population after a subroutine. Krog will offer guidance and your powers will unfold to affect the world or, potentially, the domain of the gods themselves.
Of course, as a shaman and as Krogâs Chosen, you will be guided to create something holy and empower the Green God and yourself. Empowered as you may become, you will eventually decide the fate of all orcs.
The non-shaman cities will also function similarly, with a different flavour and be less directed and consequential to world events. It will not have such an effect on the world or orcs. Here, you will just be in control of a city, not gaining the powers of a god. A non-religious city has two options, try and make it a glorious metropolis or make it a criminal hive.
In all cases, you are the policy maker.
Just to note, none of this is done yet and things are liable to change.
EDIT: Be happy to hear your ideas, Patrick. I can modify and add things more easily during the development, as opposed to the testing, phase.
EDITEDIT:
I have thought of something which may be rewarding for players. If you can think of things you have done in the game which you think warrant an achievement, let me know and I might add one for it.
I have a question. Can we be a shaman chief? I mean it could be really goood if Iâm a powerful shaman_orc god who is so ambitious to become an emperor
Edit: i just have chosen the straight old test and it moves to the choice of being a shaman and in the stat page there is a history battle of chiefdom and the map of my domain. So is it to point I can be a shaman at the same time of being chief?
Hi Ferry,
Iâm sure this particular power fantasy is shared by many orcs.
However, considering most shamans are half mad, with minds addled by mushrooms and gunkweed, theyâd make poor chiefs. Consider also, that a pure shaman will not be as interested in world conquest. His domain would be focused on the soul of the orcs and the realms of gods since he plays a very different role than the chief. A shaman with ambitions to be an emperor would probably be killed by the current chief and replaced.
But, with the shaman route in the game, you are not a normal shaman. You are Krogâs Chosen and you will become more than a mere chief.
Although, the game does cater to your need. A shaman-skilled orc can become a great chief. If you have a high piety stat when becoming an orc chief/king/emperor (or/and if you have been proclaimed as Krogâs Chosen in Pifagorcaâs temple) you get many chances to use Krogâs power against your enemies. You will effectively be the shaman-acting-as-chief, though acknowledged as the chief since it is the higher role in terms of controlling your tribe.
I also think, as to practical matters, I wouldnât want to make a route where you can be the most powerful warrior chief and the most powerful shaman together, since it would make the other paths redundant. It is part of the burden of an orcâs life to make these choice, or to not bother and drown himself in grub, grog and the gore of his enemies.
Sad but itâs yours to make.
Just another thing. In test it moves to the choice of being shaman but itâs not working as you will die if entering there I think itâs because of piety. If itâs not going to happen why starting the mature test from that point?
Hi Ferry,
Like I said, become a chief with high piety and you are already a shaman-powered chief who can conquer the world. The option already exists, to a greater or lesser degree. The shamanâs exclusive path will not focus on conquering Arbit- at least not with armies marching across the continent or with peace treaties and alliances.
The testing option has been configured to test things other than the shaman path since the shaman path has not been completed- if a player wants to experience everything they would not be using the testing option since it is catered to focus on my needs from dutiful testers, to help me pin down errors and the like. The reason it starts there is because this is when your orc becomes mature and a starting point for all mature orc testing.
The testing option will be reconfigured when the game is next updated. Indeed, I am using the testing option to test the beginnings of the new path right now.
Cheers,
EDIT: I was going to update the text of the tester choice but the information given under the choice tells the tester to decline the shaman path already.
At last Iâve finished the chief path. Loved it. Now I can rest till the release of the completed version of game to experience other paths.
One of my favorites of this is the always updated maps. That your kingdom or the cyclops conquered places are shown and updated each turn.
Also I was moved at the last scene with Merchadi. Very emotionally moving.
Loved the explanation of events after the story. Everyone loved međ
Just wished to also be remembered as a king not just a hero. Could be nice to be mentioned as a good wise king or if as a bloodthirsty one a feard king and if conquered all world as Emperor of all.
The best friend wasnât really impacting and were rarely mentioned, just enough to be there but not enough to make any big difference.
There could be a way to bring back up forces from the island of orcs at the big battles like empire or cyclops. Still need to test the running away to island pathâŚ
In general very good and with a lot of potential if there is enough energy to expand it more. I know itâs a big one as of now that itâs not even completed but the sky is the limit ( and the Author energy ) isnât it?
Hi Ferry,
Iâm so glad you got through to the end and enjoyed your time. Yes, I might add a few more best friend events, although the huge events you encounter at the end leave little room for the more personal touches. Your orc, after all, has the worldâs fate in his hands. Also, in game design terms or at least my philosophy for making this game, was to create a broad sweep of your life, with most events accounting for a year (picture it as the most significant event of that year for the smaller actions).
The best friend has far more to add if you become an adventurer since he can join your band of 4 when you go questing.
Will have another look at the possibility of bringing back island forces, it is a good idea if you get control of the sea. Although, I figured that the garrison might be too small to make a difference. Consider it added to the list for possible development in future.
The âgrand campaignâ path is very narrative-driven. I wanted to make it epic. It is hard to rationalise that everyone hates your orc after saving the world, despite if he was a brutal git- like the way the Western Allies accepted the Soviet Union as an ally in WW2. Enemy of my enemy and all that. Whatever the facts, the orcs were not as bad/evil as the cyclopes.
And if the orcs do beat everyone, well⌠the winners write the history they want to hear while they still maintain rulership.
However, I will certainly give the conclusion page another look and maybe add a few more things done the line.
But, I did think about this and knew many would want an ultimately more evil ending- The Dark Path. If you get corrupted by demons and listen to the whispers of the Dark Powers and, when you meet the emperor, find a way to put on his mask, you will get the opportunity to completely destroy the world. Unrepentantly, I might add.
This game has far exceeded my initial plan. I am now drawing firm boundaries. There are shaman and city paths left, with a final old age segment for those who donât take the epic hero/villain route. I will not be adding any extra paths after this.
What I will do is go over things again and embellish certain sections, maybe add a few events and add flavour (like, perhaps, to your best friend).
This is to ensure the game is finished within the next several months, maybe sooner. The biggest problem facing many WIPs is that they are never finished and, unfortunately, energy does wax and wane and ideas for new projects crop up to mentally interfere with things.
Thanks for showing appreciation for the maps- every shift of green is a whole new image file, it made me crazy!!!
I can tell you are a true orc aficionado!
Cheers to you!
1.3 million words Jesus Christ. Are you a full time writer?
Just walked in to say that, I absolutely love the game. In almost every game where orcs are included, they are usually the enemy the player have to vanquish, so playing as an orc is an unusual experience to say the least. And I really enjoyed forming a giant Orcish empire and blowing up the Elven forest with my death or glory boys.
