An Unexpectedly Green Journey (orc life-simulator) [1.5+ Million Words] OUT NOW!

It’d be nice if you could make Krog’s Rock your capital after becoming chief. Love the game btw!

After taking over the world, will there be more to do? Like become a god

Hi Lance, thank you so much for the epic work here. You really do have the eye of an editor! Methinks I will plop you in the game’s credits, when done, for sure.

You can now gain favour with the minor powers by donating the money. It was supposed to be there before but I think I must have gotten distracted when laying the foundation for the city paths a few months ago and added variables for the city, rather than also for diplomatic opinion.

I have fixed the errors and typos. Due to mental malfunctions, I didn’t put the ‘free hand with shires’ variable in the Royal Road choice, with the emperor. I think that messed up the functioning of the border forts battles. An annoyed Empire will also march an army to defend the Shires unless you have been given a free hand. If the Empire doesn’t hate you, but you haven’t been given a free hand in the Shires, you’ll still have to fight the forts, but without imperial reinforcements.

Grandardgard- I love the look and sound of the word, and it has roots in old English, but the bloody thing looks the same no matter how I fumble over the keyboard. Cheers for that will have to pay attention to that one!

The boars going over to Morgorc is, at present, a contrivance to ensure there is actually a fight for the player. This allows the player to find out if they have, and use, special units they’ve picked up along the way. Your reasoning is sound. Under certain circumstances, it does seem appropriate for you to have the majority of the boars- unless we say that Morgorc gave special attention to those riders, or that the old boys who trained you and led the boars demanded loyalty to Morgorc. I will definitely consider this and have added it to ‘the list.’

You are right, Krog and the cyclopes both have one eye. Have you read the Zthullu entry in the map description…

I’ll have to track down the missing map image, which took the green away after you got the Royal Road. Can you remember what other conquests you had at the time? (The last dwarf holds, the Netherwood- or if you allowed them to expand, did you have a Dark Elf homeland- did you have Greenburg at this point>). Haha, I don’t expect you’ll remember all those. I will track it down though!

Also, I appreciate the good comment ts about the writing and the satisfaction of finally conquering The Empire. It really is a long road and an achievement not to be sniffed at. Do you know how old your orc was when you managed it?

Great work! Cheers!

Hi Sab,

Thanks for playing and enjoying your time as an orc. The city builder path is along a different route than the empire builder path. Although I do think having the option to build a city, even if it is not in detail, around Krog’s Rock, as a King, is something many would enjoy.

In the city builder path, I plan to have the player more concerned with the finer details of city life, rather than continental matters. This path may even allow a great city to be declared capital by The Plains, if prestigious enough.

Cheers,

James

Hi Zoath,

After taking over the world, there will be a final threat to deal with. By that time, your orc will be old. His final end may indeed result in him being proclaimed a god, depending on how he lived his life.

At present, the Big Belly path has you becoming akin to a god.

The ‘dark path’ break away from the king’s path after the emperor’s visit and will involve you becoming an evil type of god.

There will also be a city builder path, separate from the king’s path. This will also contain the shaman path.

Apart from this, there will be events for a normal, travelling orc, to wander the land until he meets his maker.

Cheers for playing and your interest in orc life!

You know what, that’s perfectly valid. I can definitely see Morgorc giving the boar riders the best grub and first pick of the loot to ensure their loyalty given how important boar riders are historically to the orcs. Maybe just a scene somewhere to explain this? It could fit in well somewhere on the barracks path maybe?

I’d read it but not really absorbed it!

I wish I could. I’ll try to pay closer attention on my next run through and actually check after each conquest.

I think 66 at the very end. I’d done absolutely every event I could think of during my wandering orc days, so I think I didn’t become chief until mid thirties. I was definitely getting some worrying messages about how old I was getting during the imperial city siege. I don’t keep super close track of my stats all the time, does old age actually impact your orc stat wise? Perhaps getting weaker as he ages, but more cunning?

I did like the tantalizing hints we got about setting up our successor. Very interested to see how you handle that.

I don’t think a player has to keep an obsessive view of their stats, as I think this can take away from enjoying the overall world. Also, by the time you get to be a King, you’ll probably be strong enough to find a way out of most solutions, just using the core stats. Except for the events which require that you have done a particular thing before.

Although, you are correct with age, When you get very old (for an orc) your strength and constitution will diminish, while cunning and presence will get a bonus. Although the age system is not fully developed yet. Since the later king’s path is following a narrative of sorts, aged conditions are more forced upon you to help the story along. I would like for the wandering orc path to have more of a gradual withering.

In the end, I would like to have a game where you do not have to constantly worry about age, but where, if you plan to be a chief and king, you would be advised to take your shot before you get ancient, or else age will steal your ambitions.

Around 60ish seems like a good time to become the Emperor of Arbit. Though I am still thinking about the best way to end an epic orc’s life. Do legends die in bed or half buried in a barrel of grog?

Take as little or as much of this idea as you want. I like the idea of the game basically being broken down into three acts.

The first, your growth period, are your days as an orcling and wandering orc. They are big chances to grow personally, develop your stats and create friends and allies.

The second act, your rise to power, is then using those stats and allies to rise to a prominent position. This is where the game diverges, giving your orc different paths to prominence (Chief, City or Religious).

I then would like to see all of the second act paths come back together for the third act, the final threat, which is where your orc uses all the power, allies and fame they’ve accumulated over their lives to fight off the cyclopes.

I think the death of your orc, and how the player would feel okay with it, should reflect how they lived their life. My war path Chief who believed in the supremacy of the orcs and lived his life for the WAAAAAAAGH would probably only be happy to die in battle against some ridiculous foe, maybe using his last bit of mortal strength to put his axe through the head of a god or something. A city path orc who built up a peaceful trading hub though, probably happy to die in bed being fed grapes and tended to by his slaves. I think death in an epilogue is probably best and you can add some sort of variable counter to certain significant events in an orcs life and recount them to contextualize their death. As an example for a death in battle epilogue you can bring up the orcs previous great personal battles, like defeating the orc demon in the mountain, slaying the dragon, fighting Morgorc’s champion, fighting the obsidian statue etc.

On a completely separate note, is it possible to add in the standard Choice settings menu so people can play on black background if they want. I really dislike playing black text on white background.

Couple more typos and ideas from a more diplomatic run

This is pretty dumb, but I’d find it really funny if you could actually have King of Hide and Seek as an epithet as an orcling.

Final round of the joust feels like it should have more options.

I take it back, I think you put this option after the wrong text. The “Win or lose honourably” should be on the final round of the joust, not after you have already won.

No green again. I think this time the only conquering I had done was the dwarfs. I made them a tributary nation.

Why do i feel that the final boss battle, will be krog because I can see that even a patron deity will not like being contested or feeling that one of his children is getting more glory and fame than they creator

@anon12679161 I like the hide-and-seek idea! I might just nick it, like a goblin!

I have planned to make an epilogue system for epic orc deaths. I plan to do this on one of the final updates, once all the main content is complete.

I agree with you. I really can’t stand black words on bright white. I’m sure the choice script games I’ve played on Steam have black or sepia options. I’ll look into this. It might mean tinkering with HTML and CSS. In that case, I hope to find a guide to make sure I do it properly.

@Custodes Haha. You can get a dose of waaagh here, to float your boat!

@Elemental Maybe, if Krog doesn’t like you… Or, if you take the Dark Path, he may be a bit miffed. Maybe…

Hi Lance, just noticed the updated diplomatic playthrough. Fixed the typos and errors, will be there in the next update. You are right, the joust options to cheat or not became erratic due to a misplaced indent.

The map issue is strange as, on my end, the map works fine. I think it is because I am playing directly to test an issue, rather than as a player experiencing the whole game. I might be missing something. If you get time, and want, to (no worries if you can’t) would you be able to tell me when the green disappears on the map, what happens when you complete a new conquest, does the green return?

Cheers for all the help with my game!

Sure, I haven’t done a loser run for a while and I’m interested to see how a failure does becoming chief.

EDIT: Turns out losers don’t make good chiefs. Well played, I couldn’t even access the chief run with my loser git. I’ll try again with a more accomplished orc.

Loser git

Either “the grown orc who collapses” or “the grown orcs who collapse”

Another strong candidate for orcling epithets

There are several checks to be able to even challenge as a chief, including presence and horde checks, with a cowardice check.

Sorted out those typos. Will be up in the next update. ‘King of the Sty’ is a great epithet!

Cheers!

Hi,

Not sure this is the tight place for a poll, but here goes. Once this game is complete I am considering making another game set in this world of my creation.

What would be potential players preferences for the direction of a follow up? A game focused on another species, or in a future age of the world?

This will help me build things up for the idea stage of creating a future story.
Cheers!

  • A goblin ‘life simulator’
  • A dwarf ‘life simulator’
  • An elf ‘life simulator’
  • Another race/species (specify in comments)
  • Set in a steampunk-style future
  • Set in a future space faring age
  • Set in another time (specify in comments)

I was thinking since the races goblin, dwarf, and elf are like common on fantasy setting how about making one of beastman race or maybe halfdragon?

A ratmen life simulator would be fun.

@Fenrir1 @Dragomer @Leon_Kincoln

It could be fun to develop a new race/species for sure. My only concern with using primarily humans in a fantasy setting is that there are many very well done fantasy series Choice of games, Hosted Games and WIPs. Although, a more ambitious game for me might be to develop a spare faring adventure game where the player has the freedom to choose the race/species with more diverse choices, including humans with their imperial hierarchy.

Thanks for the ideas!
