Thank you for the help much appreciated
Small update regarding stats:
To make it easier to recognize MC needs, you can now change from textual to numerical stats regarding the variables of Pain, Stress, Hunger, and Thirst.
Having some problems with saving, “bad slot” error. Other titles on dashingdon work well. Probably a break caused by the update?
I played the hangman, I have an error when I loose…
A couple of embarrassing mistake on my part, apologies. I really need to stop making updates in the middle of the night! Now everything should work again
The game isn’t, obviously, a perfect rapresentation on reality—otherwise we wouldn’t have those explanations—and the skin color has, indeed, a role.
Fairer skins are more sensitive in general (you can see a slight variation in the stats), but the story is set in the near future where climate change has made it almost necessary to constantly protect oneself from the sun’s rays.
We can than say that for those with dark skin, things haven’t changed much from now (putting on sunscreen is always preferable, you can get sunburned if you stay in the sun too long, etc.). For light-skinned people, however, is outright dangerous to go out for long without a sunscreen.
In the game’s world, that is.
I love “After Dark” so much. I’ve always felt involved in apocalyptic stories, so it was like a dream come true when I see this work. It was delightful to see interesting changes with mechanics: concept of Functional Trading Card Game seems so fun. I can’t wait to see what the furthest actions my overly kind character will do with a newborn baby , considering that in this situation it is difficult even to take care of yourself, let alone others.
I’m still working on a way to incorporate skin protection in a way that’s interesting and not overly tedious (since there are various things to look at). The idea for now is to make it homogeneous with other statistics such as fatigue, not leading you to death but giving you serious deficits in what you can and cannot do, eventually during combat, sleep recovery, and so on.
Anyway, the game is balanced between bonuses and maluses. For this reason, you won’t need some items and will then be able to trade them (in due course) for other items you will instead need to use. So if you have dark skin you will be better off not using sunscreen, just as if you don’t smoke it would be silly to waste cigarettes instead of trading them, pills if you don’t need them, and so on.
If you have questions I will be glad to answer them, and if you have suggestions I’ll be glad to listen to you, but it could take me a few hours as my eyesight isn’t yet at its best. (If you want to participate in larger discussions with others, I suggest you join the discord server instead.)
Yay, glad to see that you have a new addition to your group! What’s their name, if I can ask?
I hope the rest will live up to expectations!
The girl was named after her deceased father . I really liked this detail because it felt so in character for a grieving mother . Imagine my character’s panic at the birth of a child . They are excited to be the
best big sibling , but mostly worried haha. I’m enjoying your writing so I’m sure everything will be superb. Have a good day/night.
Thank you, I’m really glad to read it. Have a good day/night!
Hey, don’t worry, this is why it’s a work in progress!
Having read the thing, I am now really hooked up for more! The world looks interesting enough, characters we have seen are nice, so yeah, gimme more, for sure. Can’t say anything about scientific accuracy for now, I’m interested to see there all of this will lead. And I liked the poetry, it wasn’t bad at all and now I’m intrigued who it is Michael is missing so.
The only thing in the way of critique I can mention is that maybe survival part needs a bit of rebalancing. Dying from hunger literally next day - that’s a bit too much, especially if we are going for some measure of realism here. Maybe instead of immediate game over, hunger. thirst and stress should offer bigger and bigger debaffs to your stats? And then those hit zero it’s game over. Just a suggestion. I’m sure you will find a better balance once the game is more fleshed out.
Oof, indeed they shouldn’t starve after one day. I will definitely continue to balance it out by progressing with the story—you never stop tweaking the previous code, alas.
Thanks for the nice words!
Hi folks, I have just fixed some minor bugs.
Sorry for the huge wait, since October I had surgery, a full exam session and a thesis. Life got in the way (my health is bad, my grandpa is dying and professors are not helping at all), so I’m sorry for any further delays. However, I promise that the next update will come as soon as possible.
so glad to see you well! pls dont worry and take care of yourself and anything in your personal life. we can wait for it even if takes a while, what matters most is that you are healthy and happy!
hey don’t worry, rest and take care of yourself, we’ll wait for you!!
Don’t worry about the update, take your time.
Your well-being is more important.
When I decide to go help Michael against sam I get ‘‘routeone line 4994: increasing indent not allowed, expected 12 was 16’’ and can’t progress any further, also christ pregnant women are always goddamned timebombs in action or survival stories. Every. Single. Times
Thank you for pointing it out! The development of AD is currently on hiatus (I’m desperately trying to get my MA as soon as possible), but barring unforeseen circumstances I’ll release the next big big update this summer
Good to know, good luck on your MA!
